Cary Ragsdale - January 11, 1949 - August 05, 2021

Departed: 08/05/2021 (New Smyrna Beach)
Obituary Preview: Cary Ragsdale, 72, of Sanford, FL, peacefully departed this mortal realm on August 5, 2021. Cary was a wordsmith, author, teacher, lover of dogs, unabashed liberal gadfly, and advocate for the homeless and all those less fortunate. Cary was born in Waukesha, WI and grew up in Huntsville, Alabama. After a tour in Vietnam, Cary received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a master's degree from Georgia State University.
Cary loved to dance and took lessons in the late 80s and early 90s. He also wrote a dance magazine about various styles of dancing, including ballroom and country western, while he twirled his partners at different venues from New York City to Washington D.C. His two favorites were the Cha Cha and West Coast Swing.
Cary had a lifelong love affair with dragons. He was the author of the 2018 children's book "The Incredible Adventures of Stick, the Dragon Who Couldn't Breathe Fire". Cary was a lover of words and a proud and devoted sesquipedalian with an expansive vocabulary, believing that one should never use a simple term when there was a multisyllabic alternative. Cary was active in the Mosaic Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Orange City and used his substantial talents to help those who needed them.
Early in the war in Afghanistan, Cary started School Supplies for Afghanistan (Hope's Journey), a charity devoted to gathering and providing school supplies to the children of Afghanistan whose education had been disrupted and displaced by the war. Hope's Journey gathered and shipped over 3000 pounds of much-needed supplies to the children of that war-torn nation.
Later in life, Cary became a tireless advocate for central Florida's homeless, working with the ACLU to challenge local ordinances and crackdowns. He also devoted countless hours to teaching SAT prep to high school seniors, and computer and other classes to the residents of local jails in order to help them avoid reoffending. Cary also worked with other advocacy groups fighting for voting rights, protections for ex-felons, and other civil liberties. Cary loved dogs (probably more than people) and adopted numerous rescues over the years, including those with disabilities and profound behavior issues. His dogs were his children and he loved them fiercely. As a quote from Stick in his book says, "He can choose to be kind and compassionate, or he can choose an alternative course. He can choose to come to the aid of others in distress, or he can ignore their troubles and think only of himself. He can choose to ignore bullying behavior when he encounters it, or he can choose to take a clear moral stand against that kind of conduct." As he wrote this book, little did Cary know he was writing his own autobiography! Cary was Stick!
Cary is survived by his loving and devoted former partner/caregiver-to-the-end Jan Holloway (whom he met during his dancing days), as well as his siblings Meri Cheatham (Bill), Terry Ragsdale (Debbi), and Barry Ragsdale (Sherri), and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Fall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It serves to inform the community of the loss and provide details of the funeral or memorial services. Obituaries often include a brief biography of the deceased's life, significant accomplishments, and a list of surviving family members.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed announcement of someone's passing that includes biographical details and information about the life of the deceased. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more factual statement of death, often confined to the announcement of the name, date of death, and details of the funeral or memorial service.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends, but can also be prepared by funeral home staff. In the case of prominent figures, obituaries may be prewritten by journalists or authors who specialize in obituaries.

How is an obituary structured?

An obituary usually begins with the announcement of death, followed by personal information including the deceased's name, age, place of residence, and date of death. It then delves into a brief recounting of their life, milestones, and family members. The last part of an obituary typically includes details about the funeral or memorial services and any preferred charities for memorial contributions.

What information is necessary to include in an obituary?

At a minimum, an obituary should include the full name of the deceased, date of passing, location of death, and information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services. Ideally, it will also have a biographical sketch including important life events, surviving family members, and major accomplishments.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral service?

Obituaries are generally published as soon as possible after a death, often before the funeral service, to inform the community and allow people to make arrangements to attend the service. However, publication times can vary depending on family wishes and publication schedules.

How long does an obituary stay public?

In newspapers, an obituary typically appears for a single day or several days leading up to the funeral service. Online obituaries may remain indefinitely on the website of the newspaper or funeral home, and dedicated memorial pages can persist for years or even permanently.

Is there a typical length for an obituary?

There is no set length for an obituary, but most are brief, capturing the essence of the person's life in a paragraph to a full column of text. Length can depend on the level of detail desired and the cost, as some newspapers charge by the word or line.

How quickly should an obituary be published after a death?

It is common to publish an obituary within a few days of a person's death to ensure that the community is informed in time for the funeral or memorial services. However, the timeline can vary based on the family's wishes and the time required to gather information and write the obituary.

What are some common elements that can be included in an obituary's biographical section?

The biographical section of an obituary may include details about the deceased's birth, education, career, hobbies, volunteer work, religious affiliations, military service, significant achievements, and impact on the community.

What is a eulogy and how does it differ from an obituary?

A eulogy is a speech given during a funeral service that offers praise and celebrates the life of the deceased. Unlike an obituary, a eulogy is typically more personalized and delivered orally to the gathered mourners. It is often longer and more detailed than an obituary and focuses on sharing memories and anecdotes.

Are photos included in obituaries?

Yes, it is common to include a photo with an obituary. This may be a recent photo or one from earlier in the person's life. Including a photo can be a meaningful way to remind people of the individual and to put a face to the name in the announcement.

How do you choose an appropriate photo for an obituary?

Choose a photo that genuinely reflects the individual's personality or how they would like to be remembered. This could be a formal portrait, a candid shot showcasing a hobby or passion, or a photo that captures a memorable moment in their life.

Should family disputes be mentioned in obituaries?

Typically, obituaries focus on the positive aspects of a person's life and are not the place to air personal grievances or family disputes. The goal is to honor the deceased and provide necessary information to the public, while maintaining respect and privacy for the family.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning. This can be a way to ensure that the information presented is accurate and that one's life story is told as they would like it to be remembered.

How are obituaries submitted to newspapers or online platforms?

Obituaries can be submitted to newspapers or online platforms through their respective submission processes. This typically involves contacting the publication directly, meeting any submission guidelines they have, and paying any associated fees.

What should be done if an obituary contains errors?

If an obituary contains errors, contact the newspaper or online platform where it was published as soon as possible to request corrections. Most publications have procedures in place for making amendments to published content.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not mandatory to include the cause of death in an obituary and the decision rests entirely with the family. In some cases, families choose to include this information to clarify circumstances or when the deceased was a public figure, but privacy concerns often dictate its omission.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely based on the publication and its pricing structure, the length of the obituary, and whether a photo is included. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others have flat rates. Online postings can sometimes be free or less expensive than print.

Can obituaries be published in multiple newspapers or online?

Yes, obituaries can be published in multiple newspapers or online platforms, especially if the deceased has connections to different communities or if there is a desire to reach a wider audience. Each publication will have its own submission process and fees.

Cultural practices can significantly influence how an obituary is written and what information is included. Some cultures may have specific customs, traditions, or sensitivities that are reflected in the way an obituary is composed or the details shared about the deceased's life.

What should be kept in mind when writing a loved one's obituary?

When writing a loved one's obituary, it's important to balance honoring their life and legacy with providing practical information about funeral arrangements. Aim for accuracy, thoughtfulness, and respect, allowing readers to understand the significance of the loss and to reminisce fondly on the individual's impact.
