Bill moved to Lewiston, Idaho from Osborne, Idaho when he was 15 after his father got a job with the railroad. His first job was working as a pin setter at Kegler Bowling Alley, which he remembered fondly. After graduating from high school, Bill attended Bible School in Oregon and received an Associate's degree in Ministries. He joined the Army in 1960 and trained in San Francisco as an Operating Room (OR) technician. He was later stationed in Landsthul, Germany and then in Fort Devens, Massachusetts before serving in Vietnam at the 85th Evacuation Hospital in PhuBai.
When he returned home from Vietnam, he attended Lewis and Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho and received an Associate's degree in nursing. While going to nursing school, he worked as an aide at St. Joseph's and when he passed his boards in 1973, he got a job working as a nurse in the OR. He remained there until he retired in 1995. After retirement, Bill worked as a massage therapist at A touch of Health, a business he founded in Lewiston. He specialized in Reiki and ortho-bionomy, and continued in these disciplines until shortly before his death.
He married Joan Yvonne Tannahill in 1957. He had three children with Joan, before divorcing. He married Constance Rae Bilby in 1978 and they later divorced. He met his third wife, Diane Louise Ropp McCann at work and it was finally the right fit. They married on January 20, 1983 and enjoyed many years of happiness until her death in 2014.
After Diane's death, Bill spent some time with his daughter in Idaho Falls and then some time with his son in Boise. He eventually settled at Affinity Living of Boise. He made many new friends and enjoyed his independence, maintaining a very busy social schedule. Bill fell ill the beginning of 2022 and was unable to live independently. His daughter was moving to Alamogordo, New Mexico and Bill moved with her and her husband.
This new adventure allowed him to get to know his great grandchildren. He had a special relationship with his two grandchildren in Alamogordo and loved eating Oreos with his great grandson. While in Alamogordo, Bill was also able to participate in a Reiki group. She was a fun and mischievous child who enjoyed spending time with her 3 siblings - Bryan, Stuart, and Maureen. As a teenager, she moved in with her aunt and uncle, Monica (Timm) and Tony Hunter, and cousins Dawn (Hunter) D'Amico and Anthony Hunter, Jr. in New Mexico, and spent the rest of her life in Otero County. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of someone's death, commonly published in a newspaper or online. It serves to inform the public and celebrate the life of the deceased, often including a brief biography, details about the family, funeral or memorial service arrangements, and special messages from loved ones.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

A death notice is typically a shorter announcement focusing on the bare facts of the death, such as the name of the deceased, date of death, and time of the funeral or memorial service. An obituary is more detailed and includes a biography, achievements, and personal anecdotes.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends of the deceased. Sometimes, if pre-planned by the person who has passed away, they might write their own obituary. Occasionally, newspaper staff or professional obituary writers are commissioned to write an obituary.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should generally include the full name of the deceased, their age at death, date and place of birth, date and cause of death (if the family wishes to include it), a brief account of their life, career, passions, and achievements, names of surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, any preferred charities for donations, and possibly a photograph.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death in an obituary is at the discretion of the family. While some may choose to share this detail to provide closure or inform about a public health concern, others may prefer to keep it private. There is no obligation to disclose the cause of death.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. It can be a brief notice or a lengthy account of the deceased's life. This is often influenced by the space limitations of the publication it will appear in and the costs associated with longer obituaries.

Where is an obituary published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local newspapers, but can also be found on various online platforms, including social media, dedicated memorial sites, and the websites of funeral homes.

Are there different types of obituaries?

Yes, there are typically two types of obituaries: traditional obituaries that are more formal and fact-based, and life story obituaries that are narrative and share personal stories and memories of the deceased.

Can I include a picture in an obituary?

Yes, you can include a picture in an obituary. Most publications allow for a photograph to accompany the text, which helps readers to visually connect with the person being remembered.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication, length, and inclusion of a photograph. Some are free, while others might charge a fee based on the number of words or amount of space the obituary occupies.

What is the importance of an obituary?

An obituary serves as an important way to publicly acknowledge the loss of a loved one, to celebrate their life, legacy, and the impact they made on others. It also helps to inform friends, acquaintances, and the community about the details of the funeral or memorial services.

Can an obituary be published after the funeral?

Yes, an obituary can be published after the funeral services. While it is common to publish an obituary before the services to notify potential attendees, some families choose to publish a post-funeral notice as a tribute or to reach those who may not have been informed before the event.

Should children and relatives be listed in an obituary?

It is customary to list immediate family members such as spouses, children, siblings, and parents in an obituary, as well as mention significant relatives. However, it is ultimately up to the family to decide which names to include.

Are there templates available for writing an obituary?

Many funeral homes, websites, and publications offer templates or guidelines for writing an obituary. These can serve as helpful starting points, especially for someone unfamiliar with the process.

Can an obituary be updated after it is published?

In some cases, particularly online obituaries, updates can be made post-publication. Physical newspapers may not offer this flexibility, and instead, a follow-up or correction notice may need to be published if significant errors are spotted or changes are required.

What happens to online obituaries over time?

Online obituaries can remain on the internet indefinitely, especially those on dedicated memorial websites or social media tributes. They serve as lasting memorials where people can revisit and even continue to post messages and share memories years after someone has passed away.

Can an obituary be written for someone who passed away a long time ago?

Yes, families or friends can choose to write and publish an obituary for someone who passed away a long time ago. This could be a way to honor them on an anniversary of their death or to belatedly inform a wider community of their passing.

How can one personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, specific achievements, personal interests, and elements of the deceased’s personality. Quotes or poetry that were meaningful to the person, or stories that reflect their spirit and character, also add a personal touch.

Is it acceptable to ask for charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is quite common to request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a specific charity that was significant to the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and support a cause they were passionate about.

Can friends write an obituary if the family is unable to?

Certainly, friends can write an obituary if the family is unable or unwilling to do so. It's important that the obituary be written and published with respect and sensitivity to the feelings and wishes of the family.

What is the process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, contact the publication or website for their submission guidelines, which may require the obituary to be sent via email or a submission form. There is often a deadline, and they may require proof of death, such as a death certificate or the funeral home’s contact information. Proofread the obituary carefully before submitting it.
