He possessed uncommon balance and agility that could have propelled him to his dream of motocross competition, but his fearlessness took him down a more destructive path and his dreams were destroyed by addiction.
He was employed in agriculture throughout his life, most recently at Nutrien Ag Solutions, where he enjoyed meeting farmers from throughout central Illinois.
He will be remembered for his sweet and mischievous smile that melted hearts, his legendary hugs and his joy in helping others.
Eric is survived by his daughter, Ellie (Joe) Weaver, son Evan (fiancée Carissa), sisters Jan Stevens, Carol (Larry) Moore, Ginger (Joe) Claflin, brother Brett (Michele) Gettings, several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition he leaves behind his beloved dog, Sadie.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary serves as a notice of a person's death, typically with a brief biography of the deceased's life, details about their family, and information regarding the funeral or memorial services. It's traditionally published in newspapers and online platforms to inform the community and honor the memory of the deceased.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of someone's life and often includes tributes, anecdotes, and a list of surviving family members. In contrast, a death notice is a more straightforward, paid announcement that typically contains bare facts about the person's death, such as their name, age, and details of any upcoming services.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. In the case of notable individuals, a journalist or an editor at a publication may write the obituary.

When should an obituary be published?

An obituary should ideally be published soon after a person's death, often within a few days. This timing ensures that people are informed in time to attend services and can express their condolences to the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased’s full name, age, place of residence, date of death, and often the cause of death. It commonly features a brief biography, highlighting significant life events, career achievements, and personal interests. Information about surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and a closing message or thanksgiving may also be included.

Why is it important to publish an obituary?

Publishing an obituary is essential for notifying friends, acquaintances, and the community of the death, allowing them to pay their respects. It also serves as a historical record and a way to celebrate the life of the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it generally ranges from a few sentences to several hundred words. Newspaper obituaries may be shorter due to space and cost constraints, whereas online obituaries can be longer and more detailed.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there is no one-size-fits-all format, a common structure includes the announcement of death, a life summary, a list of surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and any special messages or requests such as donations to charity.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are now published online on various platforms, including online newspapers, social media, and dedicated memorial websites. Online obituaries offer the advantage of reaching a wider audience and can be easily shared among family and friends.

What can be done to personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, personal stories, unique traits, and meaningful quotes that reflect the individuality of the deceased. This adds depth to the obituary and can offer comfort to those grieving.

Is a picture of the deceased typically included in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a photograph with an obituary. This often helps readers to identify the deceased and adds a personal touch.

What if I cannot afford the newspaper's fees for an obituary?

If the cost of a newspaper obituary is prohibitive, consider alternative options like online memorials, social media, or community bulletin boards. Some newspapers also offer free or reduced-cost options for those who cannot afford the standard fees.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

Family-submitted obituaries are generally taken at face value by newspapers and may not be rigorously fact-checked. However, for prominent figures or suspicious circumstances, the publication might verify key details.

Can anyone submit an obituary?

In most cases, anyone close to the deceased, including family members or legal representatives, can submit an obituary to a publication or online platform.

How can I ensure an obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

To ensure an obituary is respectful, focus on the positive aspects of the deceased's life, accomplishments, and the legacy they leave behind. Be sensitive to the feelings of family members and friends, and consider allowing them to review the obituary before publication.

What is the process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper?

The process typically involves contacting the newspaper's obituary department, providing the text and any photographs you wish to include, and arranging for payment if there are associated fees. Many newspapers have guidelines and forms available on their websites to streamline the process.

How can I make sure the obituary is accurate?

Thoroughly review all the factual information, including dates, names, and places. Asking another family member or friend to double-check the details can help ensure accuracy.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not mandatory to include the cause of death in an obituary. This decision is left to the discretion of the family and should be based on their comfort level with sharing this personal information.

How do funeral homes assist with obituaries?

Many funeral homes offer services to help write and submit obituaries to local newspapers and online platforms. They often have templates and expertise to guide families through the process.

Can an obituary be changed after it is published?

It's challenging to alter an obituary after it has been published in print, but online obituaries can sometimes be updated or corrected. Early detection of an error and communication with the publication or website is vital for making any potential changes.

What should be done if an obituary contains errors?

If errors are discovered in an obituary, contact the publication or platform to request a correction. For printed obituaries, a corrected statement or retraction can be issued, while online obituaries may be more easily updated.
