Obituary Preview: It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, John Kenneth Sanfillippo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9th, 2024.
John was the first of four sons born to Salvador and Rose Sanfillippo on August 17th, 1955 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Wheeling High School, and went on to attend Eastern Illinois University and DePaul University where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively. Upon graduating, John pursued his passion of teaching and spent 35 years working as a mathematics and business teacher beginning at Arlington High School and then spending the majority of his career at Schaumburg High School. He worked as a substitute teacher upon retirement, as he always enjoyed being back in the classroom. He was a beloved teacher, colleague, and coach who made a lasting impact on staff and students alike.
John met the love of his life, Diane (Kogler) Sanfillippo, at Eastern Illinois University. They married in 1978. Their 45 years of marriage were spent gardening, traveling, and creating lasting memories together with their four loving children. John and Diane faithfully attended and served at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumburg, IL, where John was an Elder and Communion Assistant for many years.

He shared his love of travel with his family, as they spent every summer vacation choosing a national park to visit, along with making time to visit their favorite spot, Door County, Wisconsin, almost every year.
A passionate fisherman, John spent countless hours fishing for walleye and smallmouth bass with his dear fishing buddies. His pride for landscaping led him and Diane to spend much of their time tending to their beautiful gardens. In retirement, John and Diane enjoyed hiking, taking culinary classes, and photographing the landscapes of Italy, France, and other favorite areas in Europe. More than anything, they just loved spending their time together.
For those who knew and loved him, the loss that is felt upon his passing weighs heavily. He was loved by all the many people he connected with throughout his lifetime, often with a smile on his face, a story to share, and a hand that always offered to help. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often accompanied by a brief summary of their life, accomplishments, and information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to inform the community and honor the deceased's life.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are usually published in newspapers, both local and national, but can also appear online on various social media platforms, obituary websites, or funeral home web pages.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be composed by family members, close friends, or the funeral home handling the services. Sometimes, individuals may even write their own obituaries as part of pre-planning their end-of-life arrangements.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is typically shorter and just provides the basic details of the person's death, such as the name, age, and information about the funeral services. An obituary is more detailed and celebratory of the individual's life.

What is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary often includes the deceased’s full name, age, birthplace, family members, accomplishments, personal qualities, career information, and details about the funeral or memorial services.

Can I add a photograph to an obituary?

Yes, often an obituary includes a photograph of the deceased. This helps readers to recognize the person, and adds a personal touch to the remembrance.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not mandatory to include the cause of death in an obituary. The decision to include this information is a personal preference and is up to the family or the individual if pre-planned.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published several days after a death, often prior to the funeral or memorial service. This timing allows friends and community members to make arrangements to attend the services.

Should an obituary mention charitable donations?

It is common for obituaries to suggest a charitable donation in lieu of flowers, especially if there was a cause particularly important to the deceased. This provides an opportunity for others to honor the deceased by supporting a cherished cause.

How long should an obituary be?

There is no strict rule for the length of an obituary. It can vary from a short paragraph to a detailed and extensive recount of the deceased’s life, usually depending on personal preference, the cost of publication space, and the platform's guidelines.

What if I don’t know all the details of the deceased's life for the obituary?

Gather as much information as you can from relatives and friends. It's okay if some details are left out or if you focus on what is known and cherished about the person's life and legacy.

Are obituaries verified for accuracy?

Most newspapers and online platforms have a process to verify the basic facts of an obituary, such as the death itself, but the responsibility for accuracy otherwise lies with the author of the obituary.

How can I ensure an obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

Write from the heart, focusing on the positive aspects of the person's life, and consult with family members to make sure all important and cherished aspects of their life are included and presented tastefully.

Is there a cost to publish an obituary?

Most newspapers charge a fee based on the length of the obituary and whether a photograph is included. Online platforms vary, with some providing free postings and others charging a fee.

Can anyone submit an obituary?

Usually, a close relative or the executor of the estate has the authority to submit an obituary. If it is being published in a newspaper, the funeral home may also assist in the publication.

What tone should an obituary have?

An obituary should generally maintain a respectful and commemorative tone, highlighting the positive aspects of the individual's life and the impact they had on others.

What should be avoided when writing an obituary?

Avoid including overly personal or sensitive information that may not be appropriate for a public document, oversharing details that the family may wish to keep private, or focusing on negative aspects of the person's life.

Is it appropriate to include quotes or verses in an obituary?

Including meaningful quotes, scriptures, or poems can be a beautiful way to add personal touch or express values important to the deceased or their family.

How do I handle naming survivors and predeceased family members?

List the surviving members to honor their relationship with the deceased. Typically, close family members are listed by name and relation, such as spouse, children, grandchildren, and so forth. Predeceased family members can also be mentioned to acknowledge their significance in the deceased's life.

Can the family request private funeral services in the obituary?

Yes, it is completely acceptable to state that the funeral services will be private. This lets the public know the desires of the family while still acknowledging the person's death.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, personal stories, or highlights of special achievements and traits that make the deceased uniquely memorable to loved ones and the community.

What should I do if there is a mistake in the published obituary?

If you find an error in a published obituary, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to request a correction. They may have a procedure in place for handling such situations.
