David Lee Norman - July 06, 1950 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: David Lee Norman was born in Mt. Pleasant, Texas on July 6, 1950, to Ruth Lee Norman and Paul Norman.  David and his older sister, Paula Jean, grew up in Mt. Vernon where the family settled.  He was part of a large active network of baby boomers, like himself, who entertained themselves outside in summer and winter, playing in vacant lots, riding bikes, and organizing unofficial sports and other games.  Throughout his childhood he was also very close to his maternal grandparents, Birdie Lee (known as Nanny Be) and US Lee and often spent time with them in the Purley community.  David attended and graduated from Mt. Vernon schools.  He was a member of the high school football team and valued by his friends for his sense of humor and adventurous nature.
David had a natural talent for building and working with mechanical systems, and after high school graduation in 1968, he worked on river boats, sailing up and down the Mississippi River and exploring the ports of call along the way.  After this unofficial education he enrolled at what was then East Texas State University, now Texas A&M - Commerce, supporting his education by laying carpet for a local business.  In 1970 he and Debbie Tom began dating, and after her graduation from high school they both attended Texas Tech in Lubbock in 1973.
Debbie and David married in the summer of 1975.  They moved to Arlington where David worked as a carpenter and attended the University of Texas at Arlington.  The Normans moved back to Mt. Vernon in 1978 to the historic home at 802 West Main where they would live for more than four decades.  Debbie and David became parents to two beloved daughters, Lauren in 1980 and Audrey in 1981.  During the years they were raising their family, Debbie worked professionally as a nurse and David was employed for many years in land reclamation as a surveyor at the coal mining plant in Monticello.  They retired in 2004 and began enjoying an active life gardening, collecting, and selling antiques on the internet, reading widely and socializing with family and friends.
David's family expanded when Lauren married Jason Lewis in 2009.  Over the years the family shared the love of some remarkable canines including Bob a terrier and Hank a cow dog.  In recent years Debbie and David provided superior dog day care while their daughters and son-in-law worked, with most days ending in a communal meal.
David passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, April 5 while working in his garden.  He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Paula Jean Norman.  He is survived by his wife Debbie, his daughters Audrey Norman and Lauren Norman Lewis, and his son-in-law Jason Lewis, all of Mt. Vernon.

Raymond Leon, known lovingly as Leon, Grandpa, and Pops, proudly served in the United States Navy from 1957-1962. He started the business Pizza Inn with his brother Joe in 1958, where some locations still exist today. Much like his wife, Leon had a passion for animals, owning a ranch where he raised horses and cattle. Pops enjoyed traveling to new places far and wide, taking in the beautiful world around him. He was known to love Western movies to relax after a hard day’s work. Leon also loved sports, football being his favorite to watch (and maybe bet on a time or two). This wonderful family man had a love of playing cards and made it a family tradition at holidays to gather everyone together, teaching each generation the different games and having fun doing so.

Trenton was a huge fan of the movie, Finding Nemo. He would spend countless hours watching the movie and listening to the songs from the film. Another film he adored was, The Greatest Showman, as well as listening to its soundtrack. He absolutely loved music and musicals. His favorite genre of music was classic rock. He couldn't talk like most of us, but he loved riding around and "singing" to good ol’ AC/DC and Queen amongst so many others. Music brought him a lot of joy.
He also loved the water, whether it was a pool or a lake. The water was where he wanted to be. He loved being outside and he enjoyed many camping trips.
He was also a big fan of fish. He loved watching them swim. Trenton was the proud owner of around 50 goldfish in his very own pond and had many more kinds over the years. He loved the Dallas Aquarium and always had a great time visiting there. He also counted 2 German Shepherds as his good friends, Daisy, and Star.
Trenton loved being read to. As he got older, we started reading him big adventure books. He could always make us stop and laugh because he would laugh so hard at the action and battle scenes.

“Her Love and Passion” Our dearest MamaBear (Querida Ita) was a 45-year resident of Texas but just loved visiting her rancho of San Ignacio near Gomez Palacio in Mexico. She loved cooking and playing Loteria with anyone who would play with her. Her talent for cooking was recognized by so many family and friends. Her rice and mole were amazing, and everyone told her that. She loved making salsa in her molcajete that she had kept for over 40 years. She used the same comal (flat iron tortilla skillet) to warm up the tortillas for 45 years. Her love affair of the kitchen was legendary along with her collection of pots and pans and dishes, her Mexican kitchen was her happy place. Her tamales were quite possibly the best on the planet. She also really loved to order the Chicken Fried steak at the local restaurant Two Senioritas. If she had one other favorite past time it was playing Mexican loteria with her family. She would love playing so much that she would often times wanna play late into the night with anyone who would keep playing with her. Her kids have many photos and videos of her playing even when she was sick with sniffles and still playing Loteria until 2 am with her sisters, “Las 3 Mosketeras = The 3 Muskateers” when she was in Mexico, she just loved the game. She loved her “Viejo” or her old man Ricardo and would lay hugs and kisses on any friend nearby. In her later years she came to know many doctors and nurses and equally showered them with love and smiles. She told practically every male doctor she ever met that they were “very handsome” 🙂 and every lady nurse, that they “were so sweet”. When she would visit her hometown in Mexico, she would shower her dozens of Nieces and Nephews with gifts and money, they loved her visits and she loved being there with them. She loved her little terrier Tekila who stayed faithfully by her side the final weeks of her life. She was the center of the Universe for so many people for many, many years. Espanol

Larry Gene Wilson - January 13, 1947 - August 17, 2023

Departed: 08/17/2023 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Larry Gene Wilson, 76, long-time resident of Lake Kiowa, TX, passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife, Catherine and daughter, Wendy, at his side.
Larry was born on January 13, 1947, in Canton, Ohio. He spent his childhood days with his brothers, Gary, and Bill, jumping off of boxcars, playing baseball and sneaking friends into the local swimming pool. He was a source of joy and pride to his mother, Edna and father, Bill, Sr. After graduating from Perry High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served as a medic. He reached the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged. His subsequent membership in the American Legion and status as a Veteran was a source of pride and satisfaction throughout his life.
Larry literally stopped in his tracks when he first saw Cathy, upon which he asked her to dance, and the rest is history. After dating briefly and getting engaged on their 4th date, they married one year later in 1969. They resided for 6 years in Ohio, and by 1975, he graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.
Larry and Cathy traded the brutal Ohio winters for the warm Texas sun in 1976, and Larry began his career at Emplorer’s Insurance of Texas followed by ANCO Insurance. He also got his CPCU designations in insurance and taught classes at El Centro College, Dallas. Later he co-founded Atlas General Agency in Hurst, TX, where he worked until his retirement.
After finding the perfect place to retire - a house on the 14th green of the Lake Kiowa Golf Course - Larry filled his days pursuing his lifelong passion for golf. Larry could be found on the course with Cathy and friends several days a week. Larry accomplished what most golfers can only dream of - he hit a hole-in-one twice and was a two-time Master’s Champion…spectator.
Throughout their more than 54 years of marriage, Larry and Cathy built a life of love, adventures, and wonderful memories. Larry enjoyed boating, water sports, traveling, and visiting friends and relatives. As his family grew, Larry enjoyed spending time with Wendy, her husband, and his three grandchildren by often going on vacation/trips together, attending the kids’ activities and playing dominoes.
Larry was known for his keen intellect, twinkle in his eye and his sense of humor. Larry was generous and honest, often opening his home and his boat to family and friends. He never shied away from completing huge projects with Cathy including building a deck, rebuilding a truck engine, building a queen-size bunk bed out of 2x4s, and remodeling a house from the studs. Also, he and Cathy visited all 50 states and their Capitol buildings over the course of seven years.
Larry was driven and persistent. He completed two marathons in his 40s. He also knew how to enjoy a fine cigar and a smooth whiskey. Larry enjoyed the experience of a nice meal with loved ones and friends. He laughed in the face of discounts and insisted on paying full retail when entertaining or bestowing gifts.
The world lost a good man with his passing, and he will be missed by his family and friends. For those who play golf, we might think of him and smile whenever we play a round with a Wilson golf ball. He’ll be cheering us on from the eternal 19th Hole. Family Who Went Before
Larry was predeceased by his mother, Edna Repp, stepfather, William Repp, Sr, and sister, Donna Wilson. Family He Left Behind
He is survived by wife Catherine (Horvath) Wilson, daughter Wendy (Wilson) Stiles, son-in-law Christopher Stiles and grandchildren Jackson, Emily, and Kathryn Stiles.
He also leaves behind his brother Gary Wilson and wife Joan, and brother William Repp, Jr, as well as their extended families.
According to Larry's wishes, there will be military honors at the National Cemetery in Dallas, TX on Friday, October 13th at 1:15 p.m. and a Celebration of Life held in Lake Kiowa, TX on Sunday, October 15th at 2 p.m.

Pamela Jean Blalock - June 03, 1961 - July 13, 2023

Departed: 07/13/2023 (Mount Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Pamela (Pam) Jean Blalock, 62, of Mount Vernon, Texas went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, July 13, 2023, after a long but victorious physical battle. Pam stupefied physicians by refusing to conform to the 72-hour, life-limiting prognosis and spent 2 more years testifying of her miracle working God to anyone and everyone who would listen. The final miracle occurred on July 13, 2023, when He called her home and she heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
Pamela was born on June 3, 1961, to Robert (Pete) Thomas and Ida Thomas in Mount Vernon, TX. Pam graduated from Mount Vernon High School and went on to work in the laboratory at Franklin County Hospital, Villa Visiting Nurses, and Jordan Health Services. Along the way, she developed life-long friendships with colleagues, who she would count as family.
In 1980, Pamela married Jimmie Keith Blalock. The two made their home for a short period in Mount Pleasant, Texas before planting their roots firmly in Mount Vernon, Texas where they spent the last 33 years. Pam and Keith went on to have two daughters, Nicole Blalock Weakley and Jacqueline Blalock.
Pam was a life-long member of the Hagansport Church of God of Prophecy. Throughout the years she faithfully served in various roles in the church. Her final leadership role in the church was as the World Mission’s Leader. In this position, Pamela passionately led support efforts for a partner church located in Ivory Coast, Africa, helping to secure funds and transportation for mission efforts in remote and impoverished areas of Africa. As Pam’s health declined, seeking a way to continue to minister to others, she started a greeting card ministry in which she wrote and mailed cards from home to those in need of prayer and words of encouragement.
Pamela was predeceased by her father, Robert Thomas, mother, Ida Thomas and her grandparents, Jack and Lessie Joice. She is survived by her husband, Keith Blalock, daughters, Nicole Blalock Weakley and Jacqueline Blalock, grandchildren, Destin Weakley, Jaedyn Blalock, and Coulter Weakley, two sisters and their husbands, Beverly and Avis Jones, and Angela and Bill Hunnicutt, and brother and wife, Joe and Eva Thomas, all of Mount Vernon, Texas. She is also survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who she loved dearly.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Collier’s Chapel Cemetery on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow the graveside service at the Hagansport Community Center. The family invites everyone to attend the celebration to fellowship and share memories of Pam.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of someone’s death, typically published in newspapers and online platforms. It serves as a formal announcement and often includes a brief account of the deceased person’s life, information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services, and can include special messages from loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, individuals write their obituaries in advance, leaving the publication details to their family. In other instances, a funeral director or an obituary writer at a newspaper may compose the piece based on information provided by the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, their age, date of birth, date of death, a brief overview of their life such as their career, passions, and family members, details about the funeral or memorial services, and any preferred charities for donations.

How do you announce a death?

Death is traditionally announced through an obituary in newspapers or online. Deaths can also be announced via social media platforms or through community networks, religious institutions, and other groups with which the deceased was affiliated.

Are obituaries only published in newspapers?

No, obituaries are not limited to newspapers. They can also be published online through memorial websites, social media, community message boards, and funeral home websites. Many newspapers also include online versions of their obituaries.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is typically a more detailed account of a person's life and is often written in a more narrative style. A death notice is a shorter, factual announcement of someone's passing, and it usually includes basic information such as the name, age, date of birth, date of passing, and service details.

How long after death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are usually published within a few days after death, providing time for the family to make necessary arrangements and gather important details for the announcement. However, the timeframe can vary based on publication schedules and family preferences.

Can I submit a photo with an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. Newspapers and online platforms often have specific guidelines about the size and quality of the photo to be published.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

It is not a legal requirement to publish an obituary, but many families choose to do so as a way to inform friends and the community, and to honor their loved one’s memory.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the length of the obituary, the publication, and any additional services like including a photo. Prices can range from free to several hundred dollars.

Can an obituary be published in more than one place?

Yes, an obituary can be published in multiple newspapers, across various communities, and on multiple online platforms to ensure a wide reach, especially if the deceased has connections to different regions.

What should you not include in an obituary?

It is generally recommended to avoid including overly personal details, such as the deceased’s home address, exact date of birth, or information that could lead to identity theft. Additionally, sensitive information about the cause of death may be omitted if the family prefers.

How do I write a memorable obituary?

To write a memorable obituary, focus on the unique qualities and accomplishments of the deceased, share anecdotes that capture their personality, and highlight the impact they had on their community and loved ones.

Can obituaries be used for genealogical research?

Yes, obituaries are a valuable resource for genealogists as they provide family connections, biographical details, and historical context that can be used to trace family history.

Is there a specific format to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no strict format, common elements include an introduction with the announcement of death, a life summary, list of surviving and predeceased family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and any charitable donation instructions. The tone and order of information can be tailored to reflect the wishes of the family or the spirit of the deceased.

How do family members participate in the obituary-writing process?

Family members often provide the writer with facts about the loved one’s life, share personal memories, review drafts of the obituary, and select a photograph to accompany the announcement.

What if I make a mistake in the obituary?

If a mistake is made, contact the publication as soon as possible to correct the information. Most publications understand the importance of accuracy in obituaries and will make necessary changes quickly.

How can I ensure the obituary is widely seen?

To ensure broad visibility, consider publishing the obituary in local newspapers, online, and through any associations, clubs, or groups the deceased was part of. Sharing the obituary through social media can also increase its reach.

Are there alternatives to traditional obituaries?

Yes, some families choose to write a more personalized tribute that reflects the deceased's personality, or they may create a video or audio recording, a social media post, or a more extensive online memorial that can be shared.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes, including quotes, scriptures, poems, or other meaningful pieces of literature can add a personal touch to the obituary and reflect the beliefs or philosophy of the deceased.

Do I need to mention the cause of death?

The mention of the cause of death is at the discretion of the family. Some families choose to include it, particularly if the deceased was part of a fundraising campaign or advocacy in relation to their illness, while others opt for privacy.
