Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in newspapers, both in print and online. Nowadays, they are also commonly posted on online platforms such as funeral home websites, social media, and specialized obituary sites.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, close friends, or the staff at the newspaper or funeral home. Sometimes they are written by the individuals themselves before they pass, as a way to ensure their life story is told as they wish.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary. They can range from a few sentences to a full-length article. However, newspapers may have word limit restrictions based on pricing, so it's essential to check with the publication when planning an obituary.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, simpler announcement of someone's passing, often without much biographical information. An obituary is more detailed and typically includes a biography, family details, and service information.

What typically gets included in an obituary?

An obituary often includes the deceased's full name, age, date of death, birthplace, important life milestones, educational and career highlights, family members, the time and place of the upcoming services (if applicable), and where to send donations or condolences.

How do you decide what to include in an obituary?

Deciding what to include in an obituary can be determined by the significance of various life events, the wishes of the deceased, and input from close family and friends. The aim is to capture the essence of the person's life respectfully and memorably.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

How much does it typically cost to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

Can an obituary be edited after it's been published?

Once an obituary has been published in print, it cannot be edited. However, online obituaries often have the flexibility to be revised if necessary. Always check with the publication or website to understand their specific policies.

Why do some obituaries include a request for memorial donations?

While obituaries are meant to be public, it is possible to limit personal details to reduce privacy concerns, such as omitting exact addresses or other sensitive information. Consider these factors when composing the obituary.

What is the traditional tone of an obituary?

The traditional tone of an obituary is respectful and commemorative. It is written to honor the deceased while also providing essential information in a clear, concise manner. However, some families opt for a more personal or even humorous tone, reflecting the personality of the loved one.

How do I handle conflicting information provided by different family members for an obituary?

Conflicting information should be resolved through discussion with the involved parties. Strive for consensus on the most important aspects of the obituary, and consider the wishes of the deceased if known. Professional mediators or clergy can sometimes assist in these situations.

Should the obituary mention the deceased’s pets?

Including mention of pets is a personal choice and reflects the importance of those relationships in the deceased's life. If the pets were especially significant to the loved one, they could certainly be mentioned in a tasteful manner.

Is it possible to submit an obituary to multiple publications?

Yes, obituaries can be submitted to multiple publications, especially if the deceased had connections to various communities or cities. Each publication may have its own guidelines, so tailor the obituary accordingly.

What is the etiquette for sharing an obituary on social media?

When sharing an obituary on social media, it is important to ensure that immediate family members are comfortable with it being shared in a public forum. Always be respectful and considerate of the family's feelings and privacy.

How can an obituary reflect the unique personality of the deceased?

To reflect the unique personality of the deceased, include anecdotes or quotes that capture their spirit. Highlight their hobbies, passions, and quirks in a manner that is true to who they were. Personalizing the language and tone can also help convey their personality.
