Obituary Preview: Steven Prodey October 25, 1988 - October 20, 2023 No Regrets About Today
If I knew it would be the last time, I’d see fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly, al pray the Lord, your soul sleep.
If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time, I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise, I would video tape each word, so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute or two to stop and say, “I love you, “ instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time, I would be there to share your day, well I’m sure you’ll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there’s a second chance to make everything right. There will always be another day to say our “I love you’s” And certainly, there’s another chance to say our “anything I can do?”
But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get, I’d like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, usually published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief summary of their life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and may also contain words of tribute from loved ones.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed remembrance that includes the deceased's life story, accomplishments, and information about the upcoming funeral services. A death notice, on the other hand, is a more straightforward announcement of the death that may include just the name, dates of birth and death, and service information, often without an extended biography or personal anecdotes.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, close friends, or the staff of the publication where the obituary will appear. In many cases, funeral homes offer services to help draft obituaries.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

While it is not legally required to publish an obituary, it is a common practice that serves as an important means of announcing a person's passing to the community and informing people about the details of funeral or memorial services.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

Obituaries generally include the deceased's name, age, place of residence, date of death, and the cause of death if the family wishes to include it. They often contain a summary of the person's life, including major life events, accomplishments, and the names of surviving family members, as well as details about the funeral or memorial services.

How do you begin writing an obituary?

Start by gathering factual information about the deceased, such as their full name, age, date of birth, and place of birth. Outline their life's major milestones, professional accomplishments, and personal interests. Remember to consult with family or friends to ensure accuracy and to include heartwarming anecdotes or characteristics that capture the essence of the loved one.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's typically between 200 to 600 words. It should be long enough to include all relevant information and pay tribute to the deceased, but concise enough to maintain readers' attention. Keep in mind that some publications may have word count restrictions or charges based on length.

Can an obituary be denied publication?

Publication of an obituary is usually at the discretion of the newspaper or online platform. Situations that might lead to rejection could include content that is deemed libelous, false, or in violation of publication policies. Most publications have editors who review submissions to ensure they adhere to standards.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there isn't a one-size-fits-all format for obituaries, most include the deceased's name, dates of birth and death, a biography, a list of surviving relatives, and details about funeral or memorial services. Some obituaries may also feature a photograph of the deceased.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

It is advisable to avoid including overly personal or sensitive information such as the exact cause of death, financial status, or any family disputes. Always respect the deceased's privacy and consider the feelings of surviving family members when writing an obituary.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary can vary greatly depending on the publication, its reach, the length of the obituary, and whether a photo is included. Some local newspapers may offer free or low-cost options, while major publications often charge higher fees. Contacting the specific publication for their rates is recommended.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

Once an obituary has been published in print, it cannot be edited. However, most online obituaries can be updated or corrected if necessary. Contact the publication as soon as possible to address any needed changes.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published within a few days to a week after death. This timing allows for the notification of the community and provides details about funeral arrangements to those who may wish to attend the services or express condolences.

Should children or family pets be included in an obituary?

It is a personal choice to include children and pets in an obituary. Many families choose to mention them, particularly if they were important to the deceased. When mentioning children, it's common to list them in order of their birth.

What is the significance of the phrase "in lieu of flowers"?

This phrase is used when families prefer that, instead of sending flowers, people make a donation to a specified charity or cause that was meaningful to the deceased. It is a way to honor the person's memory by supporting something they cared about.

Can an obituary be published without a funeral service being held?

Yes, an obituary can be published even if a funeral service is not being held. It serves as an announcement of the death and a way to acknowledge the person's life, regardless of the specifics of any services.

Is it important to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal decision and is not required. Some families share this information for transparency or to bring awareness to certain health issues, while others may prefer to keep it private.

What are some common phrases or words used in obituaries?

Common phrases include "passed away," "surrounded by loved ones," and "in loving memory." These terms are meant to convey respect and tenderness
