Departed: 06/17/2017 (Gaylord)
Obituary Preview: Heather Holli Williams began her incredible life on March 2nd, 1972 in Petoskey, MI. Early in the morning on June 17th, 2017, surrounded by family, she passed away after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.
Heather was an extremely kind, caring, and compassionate woman, and anyone who had the privilege of meeting her would affirm this. She had a beautiful smile that would light up any room even on her toughest days. Because of her empathetic nature, Heather’s life was spent helping and caring for others. She spent several years as a first responder for the rescue squad in Alanson serving her community. She then went on to obtain her nursing degree in 2006 and worked at McLaren Northern Michigan as a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit until she was diagnosed in May of 2016. Heather was a perfect friend, a loving and devoted wife to Wade of nearly 25 years. She was an amazing mom to three kids, Thomas, Sarah and Grace as well as Alyssa, her daughter-in-law to be. She couldn’t have been more proud of them. She was also an amazing sister, and daughter. She was patient, gentle, and involved. She never missed an assembly, sporting event, or field trip; even if it meant taking all of her notes to the gym or baseball field to study in between quarters or innings. Heather was an active member of Alanson Public Schools, where she was involved with PTO, Sports Boosters, volunteering as a class advisor for her kids, and anything else she could help with.  When she found time for herself, she was guaranteed to be watching or listening to the Detroit Tigers. After being diagnosed with, and overcoming, cancer in 2011, Heather became actively involved with the American Cancer Society, and especially Relay for Life. Even after becoming sick in 2016, Heather still attended the Bear River Crawl to help support the Northern Michigan Cancer Crusaders. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to give to local charities, through the funeral home, P.O. Box 249, Gaylord MI 49734. Heather’s family would like to sincerely thank everyone that helped and supported her and her loved ones on this journey. A Celebration of Life will take place in the near future. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, usually published in newspapers or online, detailing the deceased's life, achievements, and information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to honor the person's life and inform the community of their passing.

What is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary generally includes the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, the date and location of death, a brief summary of their personal and professional life, names of surviving family members, details about the funeral or memorial services, and occasionally an endearment or personal message. Some obituaries may also mention the cause of death if the family chooses to include it.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a close family member or friend, but in some cases, it may be composed by a funeral director or an obituary writer at a newspaper, in consultation with the family.

How is an obituary different from a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of a person's life and is often written in a narrative style, while a death notice is a brief, straightforward announcement of death which includes basic information such as name, age, and details of the funeral service, and is usually written by the funeral home.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries can be published in print media, such as local newspapers, as well as online on news websites, social media platforms, and dedicated obituary pages. Some may also be aired over the radio or mentioned in television broadcasts.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries, especially in print and online formats, to provide a visual remembrance of the deceased.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary; it can be as short or as long as necessary to appropriately convey the life and significance of the deceased. However, keep in mind that newspapers may charge by the word or by line, which can affect the length of a published obituary.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary?

If you find an error in an obituary, contact the publication or website where it was posted as soon as possible to request a correction. Prompt action can correct the information before more people read it.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Some newspapers or online platforms may publish obituaries for free, while others will charge a fee based on the length, features (such as a photograph), and circulation of the media.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days after death, in time to inform the community of the funeral or memorial service dates. However, the timing can vary based on circumstances and publication deadlines.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries as part of their pre-planning process. This can ensure that their life story is told in the way they wish and relieves the burden from family members during a time of grief.

How can I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, check the publication’s submission guidelines, which often include details on the preferred method of submission, fees, length restrictions, and deadlines. You can typically submit online, by email, or by speaking with a representative over the phone.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and is not necessary. Some families may choose to include this information to provide closure or awareness about a disease or to help explain sudden or unexpected passing. Others may prefer to keep this information private.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The purpose of an obituary is to publicly announce a death, celebrate the life of the deceased, inform the community of the passing, provide details about the funeral or memorial services, and acknowledge significant relationships and family connections.

How do I write an obituary?

To write an obituary, start by gathering important facts about the deceased's life, including dates, places, family names, and accomplishments. Write a draft that includes these facts, a brief life story, service details, and any other personal anecdotes or messages. Have someone close to the deceased review the obituary before submitting or publishing it.

Can obituaries be published online only?

Yes, obituaries can exclusively be published online through various platforms such as funeral home websites, online obituary databases, social media, or the deceased's personal digital legacy pages.

What if I can't afford to publish an obituary?

If you are unable to afford the cost of publishing an obituary, look for alternative options such as free community newspapers, websites, or social media groups. Some funeral homes also offer free obituary services as a part of their package.

Can an obituary be updated after it has been published?

It is generally possible to update an online obituary after being published; however, updating a print obituary may only be feasible in a subsequent edition of the newspaper. Always check with the publication regarding their policies on updates and corrections.

Should I include a request for donations or flowers?

Yes, if the deceased or the family has a preference for charitable donations in lieu of flowers or wants to suggest a specific charity, it's customary to include this request in the obituary. Provide the name and details of the charity so that those who wish to comply can do so easily.

What are some common phrases or words used in obituaries?

Common phrases in obituaries include "passed away," "surrounded by family," "in loving memory," "devoted," and "beloved." Euphemisms for death and expressions that highlight the positive aspects of the deceased's life are often employed to offer a compassionate and respectful tone.

How long are obituaries kept on record?

Obituaries published in print may be kept in newspaper archives indefinitely, accessible through libraries or historical societies. Online obituaries can remain accessible as long as the hosting website or platform maintains the records, which can also be indefinite.

Is it okay to share an obituary on social media?
