Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, commonly published in newspapers or online platforms. It often includes a brief biography, information regarding the funeral or memorial services, and may include personal messages from the family. Obituaries serve as a way to honor the deceased and inform the community of the loss.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of the deceased's life, achievements, and the people they leave behind, while a death notice is a shorter, more official statement that simply relays the news of death and the scheduling of any services.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by immediate family members or close friends, but in some cases, a funeral director or a professional writer may draft the obituary in accordance with the family's wishes and guidance.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

This varies depending on the family's preference and the publication timelines. Obituaries are usually published within a few days to a week after the person has passed away to allow for timely notification of upcoming services.

What details are usually included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, date of birth and death, a summary of life achievements, family members, information about the funeral or memorial services, and often an expression of gratitude or a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and not necessary unless the family wishes to share this information. Many choose to keep the cause of death private.

Can obituaries be published in multiple locations?

Yes, families can choose to publish obituaries in multiple newspapers, online obituary websites, or social media to reach a wider audience.

Are there standard formats for writing an obituary, or can it be customized?

While many obituaries follow a traditional format, there is no strict rule, and they can be customized to reflect the personality and wishes of the deceased and their family.

How can I write a heartfelt obituary?

To write a heartfelt obituary, focus on the unique traits, life stories, and the impact the deceased had on loved ones. Share anecdotes and personal memories to create a tribute that is both meaningful and reflective of the person's spirit.

Who decides what to include in an obituary?

The contents of an obituary are typically decided by the immediate family or those closest to the deceased, sometimes in consultation with a funeral director or professional writer.

Is it appropriate to add humor to an obituary?

If humor aligns with the personality of the deceased and is done in a tasteful and respectful manner, it can be a fitting tribute. However, it's important to consider the feelings of all who will read it and keep the tone appropriate for a diverse audience.

What if I can’t afford to publish an obituary in the newspaper?

If cost is a concern, consider free or low-cost options such as publishing the obituary on social media, community bulletin boards, church newsletters, or online obituary platforms.

How can I ensure that the obituary reaches those who knew the deceased?

To reach as many acquaintances as possible, you can publish the obituary in local newspapers, online memorial sites, share it on social media, and inform community groups or organizations the deceased was part of.

Can an obituary be edited after being published?

Once published in print format, an obituary cannot be edited. However, most online obituaries can be updated or corrected if necessary.

Is it necessary to list all survivors in an obituary?

While traditionally close family members are listed, it is not required to list every survivor. Families may choose to include those they feel are appropriate, and some may opt for phrases like "survived by loving family" for simplicity.

Should memorials or charitable contributions be mentioned in an obituary?

If the family prefers donations to a charity in memory of the deceased instead of flowers, this can be mentioned in the obituary, along with relevant details for making a contribution.

Can an obituary include a picture?

Yes, a photograph can be included with an obituary, and many publications and online platforms offer this option.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and fitting to the life and spirit of the deceased. It can range from solemn to celebratory, depending on the family's desires and the individual's personality.

How can the family’s privacy be protected when publishing an obituary?

Privacy can be protected by limiting the amount of personal information shared, omitting specific dates and locations, and being cautious about disclosing details that could be used inappropriately.

Is a public obituary necessary?

While not legally required, a public obituary can be an important part of the grieving process and serves to inform the community and honour the memory of the deceased.

How should I approach writing an obituary for someone who lived a difficult or controversial life?

Approach writing such an obituary with honesty yet sensitivity, highlighting positive aspects or meaningful moments while acknowledging that the deceased faced challenges or controversy. It's essential to balance respect for the deceased with the truth of their life story.
