Lecile "Tootie" M Jay - November 16, 1934 - January 28, 2022

Departed: 01/28/2022 (Newport)
Obituary Preview: The long lively adventurous life of Lecile May (Tootie) Billedeaux Jay ended peacefully at home on January 28, 2022 surrounded by her children and husband of 70 years, Donald Jay. With her passing the world lost one of the most beautiful and loving souls whose spirit will remain with us forever.
She was born in Kalama, WA on November 16, 1934 to Charlie and Mable Billedeaux. Tootie was an enrolled tribal member of the Blackfeet Tribal Nation of Montana.
During her high school years at Kalama High School, Tootie was a member of the cheerleading squad, secretary for her high school class, and she was named the Strawberry Princess for the Kalama Strawberry Festival in 1951.
Upon graduation from high school, Tootie married Donald Jay in May of 1952. They had four wonderful children. During their 70 years of marriage, the Jay family lived in Portland and Newport, OR and moved back to Portland where they spent 18 wonderful years living on the Columbia River in a houseboat, which enabled them to be able to park their boat next to the house. They were able to take their boat to downtown Portland. While on the Columbia River, Tootie hosted several CEO’s of major financial and insurance companies, the swim float was the perfect setting for these dinner events. Upon retirement they reluctantly left the river and moved to Florence, OR, finally settling in Depoe Bay, OR to be close their children.
During their years in Portland, Don and Tootie were avid square dancers. They attended State and National Square Dancing Festivals and they appeared on local television stations with their square dance troupe. Tootie wore out more than one pair of square dance slippers, sometimes dancing all night long.
She was a partner, board member, and an awesome executive secretary in the family business. She managed office staff and oversaw a payroll of over a million dollars. On one of her adventures she took the office secretaries to a training school in Miami, FL, then through the Florida Keys all the way to Key West, the southern most point of the U.S. She received many business accolades for her excellent work as an Executive Secretary. She was smart, witty, well read, opinionated, beautiful, and she did not suffer fools. If family, friends, and business colleagues were to agree on one word that would describe Tootie, it would be amazing.
Tootie was a founding member of CADET, a company that manufactured electric heating products. The D and T in Cadet stands for Don and Tootie.
Throughout their years in business, the Jays were able to travel extensively to many foreign countries and numerous outstanding resorts. During the 60’s they traveled to Acapulco and Mexico City. In the 70’s to Ireland, England, St Thomas, Hawaii, and went on a Caribbean Cruise. For the 80’s they went to New Zealand, Canada, Acapulco, Cancun, Belgium, and Hawaii. In the 90’s they traveled to Australia, and again to St Thomas and the Virgin Islands with another trip to Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico.
Some of the resorts that she attended are Tan-Tar-A at the Lake of the Ozarks, LA Costa Resort in California, Sun Valley Idaho, del Coronado in San Diego, The Fountain Blue Hotel in Miami Beach, FL as well as Palm Beach and Key West. She traveled to most major cities in the United States and Canada. In 2005 she was able to take one of her favorite trips, which was a 12-day See America by Rail. The train left Albany, OR and went to Branson, Missouri. She also went to Nashville, TN where she was able to attend the Grand Ole Opry as this was a place she always wanted to go as she loved country music. One special bucket list completed.
Tootie had a very full bucket list and she was able to complete most of it. For example, she snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Kissed the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle, where she was on her back suspended 60’ over the ground in County Cork, Ireland; standing in the water at Paileria Bay in New Zealand on Waitangi days with the Native Maori people launching their 100 man of war canoe; playing with the band in Acapulco, Mexico and eating hog jowls that are considered a specialty food. She also ate kangaroo with the Aborigines in the Outback of Australia. While in the Virgin Islands, she was personally invited to a private tour aboard one of America’s most famous aircraft carrier, the USS Kitty Hawk, which had just returned form the Desert Storm War. She attempted to surf on Waikiki Beach which didn’t go too well, but also snorkeled in Kauai and Cancun, Mexico which went very well. She was able to spend a Saturday night walking down the middle of Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans with a hurricane in her hand surrounded by other revelers. While in the Virgin Islands, Tootie and her husband were able to spend several days with Gaylord Perry, one of the greatest baseball pitchers who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and while on a camping trip with her family, they met and had dinner with the Surgeon General of Sweden who had just returned from the United Nations.
Tootie also had the pleasure of out fishing Don on every turn, from catching a 42 pound Chinook and 26 at Walleye Pike on Roosevelt Lake in Washington State. She also had a salmon jump into her boat! Tootie also knocked them dead by out fishing the men on a charter off of Palm Beach, FL.
During her retirement years in Depoe Bay, Tootie was happy to be able to spend more time with her family and friends. She touched all with warmth, love and welcome; Tootie was a true giving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. The family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection from everyone who knew her. Tootie’s enduring impact will certainly be in how deeply connected she was with love and care she had for her family.
Tootie was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Mabel Billedeaux, brothers Chuck and Don Billedeaux, and her grandson, Stephen Fox.
She will be greatly missed by her husband of 70 years, Donald Jay; daughters Lori (Jerry) Jay-Linstrom, Trudy (Paul) Fox, and Ellen O’Malley; her son Donald (Lynette) Jay Jr; her sister, Lois Grooms; brother and sister in-law Dan and Sharon Billedeaux, as well as 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
A celebration of life will be held on March 6, 2022 from 1-4pm at the American Legion in Newport.

Richard Hooper - July 07, 1950 - September 07, 2021

Departed: 09/07/2021 (Newport)
Obituary Preview: Born in Richfield, Utah in 1950, Richard Craig Hooper was a free-thinker who liked to understand how things work and their history. As a teenager, he worked at Lagoon (the local amusement park outside Salt Lake City) and in his spare time tinkered with vacuum tubes and transistors and read books about English history, never expecting that in his later years he would get to virtually explore the streets of London from a laptop. He played the accordion. He attended the University of Utah and co-owned Mobile Television, a TV sales and repair store. For most of his life, an enormous dictionary held pride of place in his living room. He would consult it during conversation, discovering unexpected etymologies and linguistic quirks. You can imagine his delight when Wikipedia first appeared.Richard believed in liberty of all kinds but most of all the right to be left alone so long as you weren't hurting others. He was a successful salesman for McKesson—a drug-dealer, as his sister Debbie joked—traveling to pharmacies and learning innumerable roads and diners in the middle of the country between the Rockies and the Mississippi. He was known for his friendliness and superior mustache. But he bristled at being someone's employee. So he eventually quit the corporate world and pursued his dream of running another small business, South Beach Grocery on the coast of Oregon, which he co-owned with Lloyd Grantham and operated until 2011. His lovely neighbor, the late Nedra Joham, got him excited about botany, so in his spare time he cultivated a beautiful garden with the help of plant expert Susan Coast. He spent many happy days in South Beach with close friends John and Ginger Johnston.Richard didn't think he would stay in Oregon forever. Too rainy, he said, though good for the flowers. But it was his final resting place in the end. He passed away at home in South Beach on September 7, 2021. He is survived by his mother, Anna Hooper, sisters, Marianne (Don) Jerome and Debbie Ashley, sons James (Lynsee) Knowlton and Ryan (Molly) Tack-Hooper, grandchildren Alexander, Milo, and Finn, nieces, and nephews. There will be no formal services. He would rather have you do whatever you might otherwise enjoy doing, in all the infinite diversity of what that might be, and maybe spend the gas money on something that brings you or someone else a little joy. Those seeking to remember his life are encouraged to leave comments on his Facebook page. If he were still around and reading this, he might tell you that the word "obituary" comes to us from a Latin euphemism for death, "to go to meet," and then crack a joke about having to go to one last meeting. He will be dearly missed.

Departed: 03/29/2021 (Newport)
Obituary Preview: Rodney Lee Anderson passed away Monday, March 29th after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His son Dylan Anderson and daughter-in-law Amy Anderson were at his side.
Rodney was one of three children born to Leonard and Doris Anderson of Toledo, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister Rhonda Hamstreet and is survived by his older brother Leonard L. Anderson.
During his working years Rodney lived the life of a “pile-buck,” building bridges and docks throughout the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. Upon retirement from bridge building he purchased a salmon trawler and fished the coasts of Oregon and Alaska. After finally settling down he could be found paddling his beloved kayaks up and down the Yaquina River, planning his next big adventure to Alaska or the San Juan Islands.
Rodney’s strong will and unique personality will be missed by all who knew him; but most especially by his son Dylan and daughter-in-law Amy, his “adopted” grandchildren, his niece Kari Mueller and her family, his nephew Brent Hamstreet and his family, his niece Kayleen Davis and particularly her daughter Jessica.
We love and miss you Pops, always.

Dottie Toler - December 04, 1930 - March 25, 2021

Departed: 03/25/2021 (Newport)
Obituary Preview: Dottie Toler always loved the Pacific Northwest nearly as much as she loved coffee. After retirement, she spent a couple of decades in an RV, spending most of her time on the Oregon and Washington coasts, traveling with her dog and her parrot. Eventually she settled in Newport Oregon until 2019 when she was involved with one last RV road trip with her gracious son Larry, moving her to spend her final days with her loving daughter Susan.
Dottie is survived by her brother Don, her children Larry and Susan, her vast Texas family including her most beloved, also red headed, grandson Colten & granddaughter Dusty who cared, loved and 'worked' with her; and her daughter in all but genetics, Debbi; her exchange student son Didier & her step daughter MaryAnn. Her beloved dog Angus went across the rainbow bridge a few months ahead of her to scout the way.
Dottie was born in 1930 in Douglas Arizona, grew up in California, earned her RN at St. Francis in San Francisco, after which she and her friends Sue and Bobbi started on a trip working their way around the world as nurses. Sue and Bobbi made it as far as Seattle before they were married, Dottie then went to New York where she met her first husband. After a brief sojourn in Cleveland Ohio where their son Larry was born, they moved to San Jose where their daughter Susan was born. She raised a family in Felton, nestled in the redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains, where she divorced Mark, eventually married her second husband Vern, and traveled the world. After Vern passed on, Dottie stayed in the Northwest year round.
People who knew her in recent years knew of her activities with the Red Hat society. In addition to her career as a nurse, including surgery, neonatal and ICU nursing her activities and interests throughout her life would fill a long and diverse resume. Her menagerie of pets even included an otter. She earned her ham radio license in the 1950s, collected rocks, was an avid photographer and the hats she crocheted for those she considered family were legendary. Long before fusion cuisine became a thing her culinary adventures were unconstrained by culture or custom.
Dottie was a woman of countless pursuits, many of which she did better than most.

Gerry L Carrick - September 30, 1934 - March 20, 2021

Departed: 03/20/2021 (Newport)
Obituary Preview: Gerry Lou Carrick was born in Toledo, Oregon on September 30, 1934 to Dollie Veneta Stockdale and Wesley Arthur Parfitt. She went home with her mother to Grandpa Stockdale’s homestead in Burnt Woods after 10 days in the hospital.
In 1940, Dolly moved to Corvallis and was working as a waitress when she met the love of her life, Delbert “Deb” Follett, a burly and gentle logger. Deb married Dollie and adopted Gerry and her sister Patricia. Mom always referred to Deb as “Papa” and they were very close.
From 1940 to 1946, Gerry and her family moved from one Oregon logging camp to another in the Willamette Valley, places such as Alpine and Valsetz. Finally, in 1946, the Folletts moved to Waldport and settled down. Mom went to school and became friends with Darlene Lundy (Pankey), Boopy Lundy (Bacon) and Shirley Dallenbach (Robertson). Darlene became mom’s best friend and it remained that way for 75 years, until Mom passed away.
In 1948, during her sophomore year at Waldport High School, a major event occurred that would forever shape mom’s life, when she came down with Polio. Mom was taken to the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland for treatment. It didn’t look good for her, as she almost had to be treated with the iron lung breathing machine, But mom was a fighter and she triumphed over a tough opponent. The effect of the virus would leave her unable to participate in athletics, which she loved.
Mom graduated from Waldport High School in 1951 and went to Portland to attend business school, where she earned a certificate in Business Studies. Gerry came back to Waldport and started working. In 1955, she met a handsome devil named Clyde George Carrick and on January 28, 1956 they were married at the Waldport Presbyterian Church.
Mom commuted to Toledo to work as a secretary at the Georgia Pacific Mill until 1959, when Clyde O. was delivered on December 16, 1959. 21 months later, mom delivered Cord J. on September 11, 1961. Gerry became a stay at home mom, chauffeuring the boys to various events such as Cub Scouts, School and Little League. Gerry and her Mom Dollie were instrumental in founding the Waldport Public Library, holding the first two cards issued. Mom was also a lifetime member of the Waldport Women of the Moose Lodge #396, becoming Senior Regent, just like her mother and sister.
Gerry returned to the workforce in 1970, when she started to work at the Lincoln County School District, working as a librarian and teachers aide in the Waldport-Yachats area. Gerry was very patient and worked with students who needed extra help. When I would visit Mom in Waldport after she retired in 1994, I was amazed at how many of her former students would come up to visit with we were grocery shopping. I could tell she had made a positive impact on their lives, and Mom is one of the big reasons why I made a career change to education.
Gerry was a proud mother of her two boys and their success, as both graduated from Waldport High School and Linfield College. Both married and blessed Mom/Dad with four grandchildren.
Once retired, Clyde and Gerry became “snowbirds”, spending the winters in Yuma, Arizona, where they made many friends. Mom found swimming in the park pool helpful, as it helped her with the damage caused by Polio and Post Polio Syndrome, which attacked the nerves in her legs. Clyde and Gerry were members of the Nostalgia Car Club of Yuma, where they participated in many parades and club activities. They also liked to go out into the desert to explore, along with going to Algadones, Mexico and the Yuma Dogtrack Flea Market.
In 2010, Clyde and Gerry resumed living in Oregon full time. They stayed home in Waldport, spending time with their sons and grandchildren. Cord lived on the property and helped to take care of the folks.
On October 11, 2016, Clyde passed away unexpectedly. Cord became the primary caregiver for Mom, allowing Mom to stay living at home. The damage done by Polio and Dementia were too much, and she died peacefully at home to be with her family and friends in Heaven on Mar 20, 2021 . Survivors include sons Clyde O. (Marie) of Eureka, CA; Cord J. of Waldport; Niece Michelle Brown of Keizer; Nephew William Beardsley (Deceased); Great Nephew Jason Smith (Sheelah) of Spring Valley, CA; Great Niece Tia Brown of Toledo; Great Niece Tamera Beardsley of Coos Bay; Great Nephew William Moorehouse of Florence; Grandaughters Faith and Sarah Carrick of Eureka, CA; Grandsons Brandon Holmes (Janie) of Vancouver, WA and Jason Carrick (Seana) of Waldport.
Special thanks to Vickey Duncan, who was instrumental in making mom’s final days in hospice comfortable; Samaritan Hospice for helping mom to live at home during her final days; and her best friend Darlene Pankey of Waldport, who talked daily with her best friend of 75 years.
Gerry was cremated and her ashes were scattered with her husband Clyde’s on the grounds of their 10 acre spread.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday October 2nd, 2021 at the Waldport Moose Lodge from 1-3 PM, where Gerry was a lifetime member. All those who knew and loved Gerry are invited to attend. NOTE: Wearing of masks and social distancing is required indoors, per Governor Brown’s directive to stop the spread of Covid 19.
