What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of someone's death, typically published in newspapers and online. Obituaries serve as a way to inform the community and honor the memory of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. Journalists also may write obituaries for notable figures.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of a person’s life and is often written in a narrative form. It may include the person's biography, achievements, and personal anecdotes. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more factual statement of death. It may include basic information such as the name, age, place of residence, and details of the funeral service.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary?

How do you decide what to include in an obituary?

It typically includes their full name, age, date of birth and death, names of surviving family members, a brief overview of their life and career, any notable achievements, and details of the funeral or memorial service.

Can an obituary be written for someone who dies without any known family?

What if I want to keep certain information private?

You have the right to keep any information private when writing an obituary. You may choose not to disclose the cause of death, or to omit sensitive information about the person’s life.

Are there any risks associated with publishing an obituary?

While obituaries pay tribute to the deceased, they can also alert potential criminals that a house may be empty during the time of services. It’s wise to omit exact addresses and consider asking a neighbor to watch the house during these times.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

It’s common to publish an obituary within a week of a person’s death to allow time for friends and extended family to make arrangements to attend the funeral service if they wish. However, the timing can vary depending on the family’s wishes and the publication's deadlines.

What should be done if an error is found in an obituary?

If an error is found in an obituary, contact the publication where it was printed as soon as possible. Most can make corrections in the online version immediately and may issue a correction or reprint in the next possible print edition.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Is there a cost to publish an obituary?

Can an obituary be updated after it has been published?

It can be difficult to update an obituary once it's been published in print, but online obituaries often have more flexibility for edits. It is best to thoroughly review an obituary before it is published to avoid the need for updates.

What kind of details can be included to personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, you may include details such as hobbies, passions, favorite quotes, or anecdotes. Mentioning significant life events, volunteer work, or unique traits can also add a personal touch.

Can I post an obituary for a pet?

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

It is not necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary unless the family wishes to share this information. Sometimes, families will share the cause of death to bring awareness to a certain disease or condition.
