Michael Barnes Wray - December 31, 1950 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Greeley)
Obituary Preview: Michael Barnes Wray 1950-2024
What is the common denominator of football, sandwiches, bourbon, and family? A man fondly known as “Papa”. Michael Barnes Wray, 73, of Windsor Colorado tragically passed away February 23rd, 2024 at the age of 73 in Windsor, Colorado.
Michael was born in Bristol, Connecticut on 12/31/1950 to Sidney Waddington Wray and Nancy Barnes (Defeyter) Wray. Losing his father when he was 15 and being the oldest of 7, Michael was quickly thrown into young adulthood where he learned the importance of connection and community. His mother described him as a “hard charger” who worked diligently to create opportunities for others to shine.
Michael attended a small boarding high school called Webb in Claremont, California before studying animal science and agriculture at Colorado State University. He had a competitive and fair athletic spirit that provided him the impetus to organize, coach, and play on the first rugby squad at Colorado State. After completing his Junior year at CSU, he moved West to Klamath Falls, Oregon to pursue his true passion, agriculture. Once he had mastered Cattle and Crops, he opened a Car Dealership. His community was as important to him as he was to them.
Michael is survived by many. His sons, Sam and Thomas Wray, his daughters Molly Halligan and Olivia Jorgensen, his son-in-laws Jason Halligan and Dayer Worrell, and the love of his life Rebecca Jorgensen Wray. His surviving siblings are Nancy Dey (John), Mark Wray (Connie), Susan Hedges (Monnie), Steve Wray, and Judy Nelson (Peter). His surviving cousins are Tom Barnes (Melanie) and Jarre Betts (Witt).
Michael adored his grandchildren. Travelling to see them and support them in their events was his most beloved hobby. His grandchildren include Max Wray, Jake Wray, Oliver Halligan, Josie Halligan, Gray, Sayda, and Kesson Worrell. Michael treasured his time with his grandkids and loved attending their football games, lacrosse tournaments, musical performances, karate competitions, never failing to be the one with the biggest smile at the event.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Nancy Barnes (Defeyter) Wray and Sidney Waddington Wray and his sister, Ellen Wray.
Everyone who knew Michael knew how much he loved to travel. Everything from the aircraft type to the hotel and restaurant choices were vividly discussed closer to the trip approaching. We’ll always imagine hearing him call from these trips saying “good morning, it’s papa. I’m calling around 0800 hours on Wednesday morning the 1st, it’s a beautiful day here.” He had a contagiously positive attitude that he brought with him everywhere. Michael will always be remembered for his kind and generous spirit and the way that he never left anyone behind. He never forgot to say thank you for a home cooked meal as demonstrated by his typical “damn that was good” expression. For these and many greater qualities, we will miss Papa Michael Barnes Wray every day.

Obituary Preview: Debra Claxton Obituary
Debra Claxton, age 70, passed away peacefully after battling health complications for over fourteen years on Sunday, February 18, 2024 in Greeley, CO. She was born April 22, 1953 to Robert and Barbara Willson in Manchester, Iowa. Her family moved often, living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Sibley, Iowa; Fort Smith, Arkansas; Camp Polk, Louisiana; Manhattan, Kansas; River Falls, Wisconsin; and Tempe, Arizona. Deb was an adorable child who loved to laugh, dance to music, read, and entertain her family – she was the oldest of four. Growing up, Deb was an active student, participating in many school activities, but she was most passionate about acting and writing. After graduating high school in 1971, she attended Worthington State Junior College and continued her education at Mankato State University, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communications and a Minor in Sociology. She worked for both college newspapers and acted in various plays and productions.
Her family was the most important thing in her life. She had two children: Angela born in 1985 and Brian born in 1987. She was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease in 1992, and lost her third child, Charles, five days before her 39th Birthday. An early testament to her strength and resiliency, she continued to care for her children and started a job at Knott’s Camp Snoopy. Deb always loved to have fun, go on adventures, and of course laugh.
Although nobody knew Deb when she moved to Pepin, Wisconsin in 1994, that all changed when she started working for the Courier-Wedge, the local newspaper, in 1997 first as a reporter and then the editor. It was a true labor of love though often stressful. Nonetheless, the entire family often tagged along, including her granddaughter Emily, who was born in November, 2000. Together they all shared many wonderful memories including traveling for sporting event playoffs, parades, and community events. It showed an entire community her super-powers, which were showing up for people, supporting them, loving them with her whole heart, and making them laugh.
Tragedy struck Deb and her family when her daughter Angela died in November, 2001. Deb continued to juggle it all somehow, and even received recognition for her work, winning an award from Pepin Area Schools for Excellent Press Coverage in 2000, a Wisconsin Music Educator Association Award in 2002, and two consecutive WASB Media Honor Roll Awards in 2003 and 2004. She always showed up, supported, and loved with her whole heart.
In retirement she self published It Ain’t Heavy - It’s The Lite Side which was based on her weekly humor column, and had stories published in My Funny Major Medical, and Open Doors: Fractured Fairy Tales. She acted in seven productions from 2014-2023 and realized her dream of becoming a professional character actor working for Dinner Detective Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre from 2021-2023. She had a renewed vibrancy for life after moving to Denver in 2017 and living in an Active Seniors Community, where she made many new and lasting friendships and enjoyed her independence at many concerts, shows, and events. Most of all, she loved being close to her immediate family and spending time with her new grandson Felix, born November of 2023. Deb will be dearly missed by everyone she touched in her 70 years of life.

Kendall E. Mallory - March 29, 1956 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (Greeley)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our husband, father, and dear friend Kendall Eugene Mallory. Kendall succumbed to his nearly 5-year battle with esophageal cancer on February 16, 2024 and leaves behind his beloved wife, family, and many friends.
Kendall was born on March 29th, 1956 in San Bruno California to his father Charlie Eugene (Gene) Mallory and mother Alva Gene Mallory. Kendall spent most of his youth growing up in Pasadena California and attended Pasadena High School where he graduated in 1973. They attended Bresee Church of the Nazarene in Pasadena, and Los Angeles First Church of the Nazarene.
At Pasadena High School, Kendall participated in cross country and track. He also developed a lifelong interest in photography. After graduating, Kendall moved to Farmington, Michigan with his parents where they lived for two years. During this time he attended Oakland Community College and Detroit First Church of the Nazarene.
When Kendall was 19, he moved to San Diego where he planned to attend Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) for a year or two while focusing his life on his studies. He became deeply involved in the physics department, rekindling his childhood passion for astronomy and physics, making many lifelong friends. His original plan was to transfer to another university to complete his education, but he ended up graduating from PLNU in 1979. This is also where he met his first wife Laura Oliver with whom he had his three children: Kelsey, Liam, and Tristan.
Kendall found his first engineering job in 1979 with Rohr Industries, while continuing his engineering studies at San Diego State University. He moved to a job with Rockwell International, Anaheim in 1981, where he stayed until 1989. He graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a MS degree in engineering in 1984 and started his graduate studies in physics at the University of California, Riverside that same year. Over the length of his academic career, he developed research skills in computer modeling which he used to complete his PhD in 1990. His dissertation was about electrical conduction in disordered materials.
In 1990, Kendall started a postdoctoral position at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England where he worked on research into nanometer scale electronics. A year later, he took a position as a physics professor at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) in Greeley where he stayed for 15 years — he was adjunct faculty for an additional 5 years after returning to Colorado in 2015. In 2006, Kendall accepted a professorship at PLNU where he stayed for 9 years. At the same time, he taught physics and astronomy at San Diego City College.
Kendall’s children were always his greatest joy in life and he loved them deeply. Kelsey was born in Long Beach, California in 1989 while Liam and Tristan were born in Greeley, Colorado in 1993. Kendall shared his interests in physics with Kelsey and she completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics at UC Berkeley. Kendall shared his interest in computers with Liam and Tristan who completed degrees in computer science at PLNU. Some of Kendall’s favorite memories of his kids growing up include helping Liam build computers and electric guitars, attending many of Tristan’s high school track and cross country meets, and helping Kelsey attend summer dance intensives. Currently, Kelsey lives in London while Tris and Liam live in San Diego. It is hard to express the pride Kendall took in the wonderful caring people his sons and daughter have become.
In the mid-1990s, Kendall started his long-term involvement with the Colorado Dance Theatre (CDT). He was an active member of the board through 2006 and resumed this work after returning to Greeley in 2015, for the remainder of his life. He developed many set pieces and was CDT’s primary photographer for many years.
In 2013, Kendall married his second wife Shannon. They had been friends as teenagers and had a wonderful life together until Kendall’s passing. They shared many interests in camping, mountains, beaches, natural history, geology, astronomy, photography, and country living, just to mention a few. They took a wonderful vacation to Alaska in 2021 visiting glaciers, Denali National Park, and the Kenai Peninsula; they saw caribou, grizzly bears, otters, and went fishing for halibut.
In 2015, Kendall and Shannon moved back to Colorado with the goal of eventually retiring in the Rocky Mountains. They moved to Greeley where Kendall taught at Aims Community College and worked as adjunct faculty at UNC. After a few years, Kendall found himself in his fight with esophageal cancer. Greeley turned out to be a good place for him during these years. He had many wonderful family members and friends who supported him in his battle. Kendall also found excellent cancer care in Greeley at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. His treatments gave him many wonderful years that he spent reflecting on life and letting everyone know how much he loved them.
Kendall is also survived by his brothers Calvin (Bonita) and Loren (Debbie White), his nephews Erik, Ryan and Ian, and their families, and Shannon’s daughters Ashley Brattel and Avonlea Neustaedter.
He was loved by many and will be missed by all. When you look up at the night sky, Kendall will be the brightest star in the universe.

Elizabeth E Siedenburg - September 18, 1931 - February 06, 2024

Departed: 02/06/2024 (Greeley)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Emmaline Siedenburg
Elizabeth (Liz) was born to Gladys and Glen Cowen Sr. on September 18, 1931 in Bird City, Kansas. She was the second oldest of five, and was raised by her mother in Haxton, Colorado after her father passed away from a farm accident. Liz began working after school to help support her family at the age of 7, washing dishes at a local diner for a nickel an hour. Liz was always doing without so others might have what they needed. She worked her whole childhood and developed a strong work ethic and a heart of service.
When she was 19, she met her future husband, Theodore (Ted) Siedenburg. Ted joined the Navy in 1952 and was stationed in San Diego, California. After a whirlwind courtship, Liz and Ted met in Yuma, Arizona and they eloped on August 16th, 1953. She then joined Ted in California. With the end of the Korean War, Ted completed his time with the Navy and they moved to the Siedenburg family farm near Holyoke, Colorado. It was here that they worked and continued to grow their family. After living ten years in Holyoke, the family moved to Boulder in 1967. Ted worked for the Colorado Department of Transportation and Liz worked at Montgomery Wards as a bookkeeper. Their family flourished in Boulder, then Louisville in 1979. The kids soon started lives of their own. Ted and Liz both retired in 1989. In retirement she volunteered at the Advent Health Avista hospital in Louisville.
Later Ted and Liz found new joy in life with their grandchildren. To that end, they moved to Johnstown, Colorado in 1997 and settled just three blocks away from their grandkids. With Ted’s passing in 2002, Liz became the family’s matriarch. She hemmed and mended their clothes (often with a moment’s notice) and saved many beloved stuffed animals from losing limbs. She also filled her time making cookies, banana bread, and all sorts of jams because she knew her family and friends enjoyed them. Liz would pick up the younger grandkids from school and they often enjoyed warm cookies and cold milk until their parents picked them up. Liz also made weekly Wednesday dinner for her grandkids every week for 20+ years, taking great pride in being able to provide for her family. She would bake their favorite sweets for birthdays and host all holidays. Her home was always a comforting place for all to gather.
Liz was known for her loving treatment of everyone, and always ensured she gave everyone gifts and treats of equal measure so no one would ever feel that they were not as special to her. All of us looked forward to our plate of Christmas cookies and fudge each year. She would make special dishes to cater to the likes and dislikes of her family. Every Christmas she would make a special dish of fudge without nuts for one grandchild; and at family barbecues, another family member got his own special bowl of potato salad without onions.
Liz was the best example of those who are called to service, and was incredibly humble about her gifts to those around her. Her main concern was always how she could best entertain and serve. She would stress about being the best host to everyone who would enter her home, regardless if it was for a few minutes or for a few days. She would take note of her family and friend’s favorites, and often visitors would come over to a fresh baked batch of cookies or a loaf of banana bread lovingly made just for them. She loved being able to sit down and share her stories while enjoying a cup of tea and a baked treat.
Liz also established strong ties in her community. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Johnstown and the Johnstown Senior Center. She volunteered to serve lunch every week at the senior center, help at the church rummage sale, and bake pies for the church Thanksgiving dinner. One of her favorite activities was traveling up to Blackhawk with her friends and/or sister to bet on the penny slots. She continued her Blackhawk trips up until this last year.
In 2023, Liz had two major falls where it became necessary to move her to Grace Pointe. While she loved her home and was disappointed to not be blocks away from her family and cooking her famous treats, her room was a revolving door of visitors from her family and friends. While she spent her last few months at Grace Pointe, she was always surrounded by those who loved her so much. Everything possible was done to make her feel at home. Liz was placed into hospice Friday, February 2nd 2024. As a family, we all came around her for her last few days and enjoyed her loving company and her witty remarks. Liz passed away peacefully at 2 am February 5th, 2024 surrounded by two of her granddaughters, giving her the company she always loved as she began her next journey.
Liz was an amazing sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. The Siedenburgs have been very blessed to have her as the matriarch of their family. She is greatly missed, and her love for those she has touched endures in our hearts and in the many Liz stories we share.
Liz is preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, her brothers Manual and Glen, and her sisters Phoebe and Joann. Liz is survived by her sons; Glen (Penne), Gale (Kelly), and Gary (Carrie), her grandchildren; Angela, Ryan, Danielle, Sabrina, and Star, and her great grandchildren; Tony, Danny, Gabby, and Gabriel.

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief summary of their life, information about their family and survivors, noteworthy achievements, and details about any funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a formal way to acknowledge someone's passing, inform the community and extended network, and celebrate the life of the deceased. They also provide important information for friends and family wishing to attend services or offer condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by close family members or friends of the deceased. However, in some cases, the funeral home or an obituary writing service is responsible for composing the text, especially for publication in newspapers and on websites.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a summary of their life, surviving family members, information about the funeral service, and possibly a photo. Some obituaries may also include causes of death and personal anecdotes or messages.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

The timing for publishing an obituary can vary. It is typically published several days to a week after death, allowing time for the family to make arrangements and gather necessary information for the obituary.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no set length for an obituary. It can be as short as a few sentences or as long as several paragraphs. The length may be influenced by the publishing platform's space limitations and the amount of information the family wishes to include.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, a photograph can be included with an obituary. It is often a nice way to visually honor the deceased and can help readers who may have known the person by face rather than by name.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more factual statement of the death and service details, often placed by the funeral home, while an obituary is a more detailed account of the person's life and is typically written by family members or friends. Obituaries often contain personal touches and longer biographical information.

How can I ensure an obituary is respectful and accurate?

To ensure respect and accuracy, involve close family members in the writing process, fact-check all dates and names, and write with a tone of empathy and honor. It is also advised to have someone else review the obituary before publication.

Should I mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and not required. Some families prefer to include it for closure or awareness, while others may wish to keep it private. It's important to respect the wishes of the deceased if they were known.

Is it appropriate to include religious texts or poems in an obituary?

Including religious texts, verses or a poem can be appropriate and comforting for both the family and the readers, particularly if they reflect the beliefs or personality of the deceased. It's best to keep these elements concise and relevant to the context of the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, you'll need to contact the newspaper or website directly. Most publishers have specific guidelines for submissions, including length restrictions, deadlines, and fees. Always check their policies beforehand.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Most newspapers and many online platforms charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost can vary widely based on length, publication circulation, and whether a photograph is included.

What can I do if I find a factual error in an obituary after it's published?

If an error is found after publication, contact the publisher immediately. They may be able to correct the online version and may issue a correction in the next print edition, if applicable.

How can friends and family contribute to an obituary?

Friends and family can contribute to an obituary by sharing memories, photographs, and pertinent information about the deceased's life with the person writing the obituary. They may provide insights that add personal depth and detail to the final piece.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that the information is accurate and that their life is represented in the way they wish. It can also relieve some of the burden from family members during a difficult time.

What should I avoid including in an obituary?

In an obituary, it's best to avoid including overly personal details that might infringe on the privacy of the deceased or surviving family members, such as addresses, financial information, or contentious personal history.

How does one address donations or flower preferences in an obituary?

If the deceased or the family prefers donations to a charity instead of flowers, this can be stated in the obituary with details of the specific charity and how to donate. If flowers are welcome, this can also be mentioned, potentially with preferred florists or types of arrangements.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

To make an obituary more personal, include anecdotes, mention special hobbies or interests, use signatures or phrases the deceased was known for, and highlight the impact they had on the lives around them. Personal touches can add warmth and depth to the notice.

Is it necessary to have an obituary proofread?

It is highly recommended to have an obituary proofread by someone not involved in writing it. A fresh set of eyes can catch errors or suggest improvements and ensures the obituary is clear and free from mistakes before it's published.
