Obituary Preview: Souad Nemo, of Chicago, IL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at the age of 89.
Souad was born in Iraq to her loving parents, the late Abdul-Ahad and Kaloola Nemo. The youngest of six children, Souad was preceded in death by her siblings Najia (Ibrahim), Marie (Don), Matti (Nadira), Kamal (Nawal) and Ramzi (Olga); She is survived by siblings-in-law Matti’s wife Nadira and Ramzi’s wife Olga. Souad will be greatly missed by her loving nephews and nieces Basel, Tiana (Hassan), Raghad (Janan), May, Saad (Maha) and the late Ramzi N. (Sasha) as well as numerous loving great-nephews, great-nieces, and friends. Biography and Tribute from her nephew Basel Al-Aswad:
We have lost a beloved gentle soul, my aunt Souad Nemo. Born in Baghdad, Iraq on September 3, 1934, she was the youngest of her siblings, my mom Najia being the oldest. She was raised in a most loving and comfortable household of Abdul-Ahad and Kaloola Nemo, in the Saadoun neighborhood of Baghdad in the 1940’s and 50’s. After graduating from University of Baghdad with a degree in Social sciences, she worked as a social worker mainly in government agencies responsible for Orphanages in the city.
Dedication to her work and taking care of her parents as well as being a loyal friend to many, took most of her time. She also befriended a young family, the Alnafoosi’s in the Mansour district where she lived later on, and as they grew larger they became her adopted family too. In the 90’s when a lot of my family's maternal side, the Nemo's, had left Iraq, she stayed and became very close to the paternal side, the Al-Aswad’s.
She finally came to the USA in 2001, staying with my mom Najia until she passed away in 2003, then with Mandy my daughter till her marriage in 2014. Soon after, her sister Marie moved to Chicago and she took care of her till she passed away in 2018. From then on she was on her own, independent, and in good health, helping others, keeping in touch with friends and family all over the world as well as traveling to visit them.
The last matriarch of her generation, she exhibited the everlasting virtues of love, compassion, acceptance of people from diverse backgrounds and giving of herself to others. All of us, family, friends will miss her deeply and keep her loving memory in our hearts. We are all her children.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, 4343 Main Street, Downers Grove, Illinois 60515.

Bonnie G. Simmons - July 21, 1943 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Downers Grove)
Obituary Preview: Bonnie Gayle Simmons, former resident of Wheaton, IL and current resident of Lombard, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at the age of 80.
Bonnie is survived by her children Daniel (Mary), Brian (Robin), Stephanie Corr (Greg) and Joanna Koch (Tom), her grandchildren Kenneth, Anthony, Johnathan (Meghan), Timothy, Marin and Lucy, and her great-grandchildren Ella, Kenneth Jr., Adley, Leighton and Landry.
Born in Amarillo, Texas in 1943, Bonnie’s father, Cpt. F. James Strader died in battle before she was 18 months old, and shortly after, our grandfather, Bill Anderson adopted her as his own. We pay tribute to our grandmother, Wanda Lou and her mother, Dollie Sunshine for their strength with a constant side of humor. Burnt toast is good for your stomach.
Leaving Texas one month after turning 18, Bonnie set off on a journey to the corners of the globe, from staying at the Hotel Metropol in Moscow to hanging out with Galapagos penguins. Bonnie was a curious seeker and continuous learner, always willing to travel far to find answers. Her love for Japanese culture and art stayed with her for life.
Eventually, the Simmons family settled in Wheaton in 1976, and Bonnie swiftly completed her Bachelor’s degree, MBA and CPA. In the fall of 1982, she began her 30-year academic career as an accounting professor and taught at North Central College until 1998. After a well-earned break, she rejoined academia at Elmhurst University in 2002, and taught until 2016 when she retired at 73. She spoke of her students and colleagues nearly every day of her life.
Bonnie was an avid bridge player, reader, and Wii bowler with a remarkably low handicap. She attended her grandchildren’s plays, speeches, baseball, softball and football games like it was a sport itself. We speak with joy knowing Bonnie spent her last day enjoying a happy time with her dear friends, celebrating many years of hard work, and a life built with her own two tiny hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers and online platforms. It usually includes a short biography of the deceased, including their achievements, family information, and details about memorial services or funerals.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

While they are similar, an obituary is more detailed and often includes a biographical sketch of the deceased person's life. A death notice is a more straightforward announcement of the person's death, time, and place of the funeral or memorial service, without additional biographical details.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, close friends, or funeral home staff. Some newspapers also have staff writers who can assist in writing an obituary.

When should an obituary be published?

An obituary is generally published shortly after a person's death, ideally within a few days to a week. This allows sufficient time to inform friends, acquaintances, and the community about the funeral or memorial service arrangements.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on online memorial sites, and sometimes on social media. They may also appear in national newspapers or trade publications depending on the deceased's prominence or career.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, age, date of birth and death, a brief account of their personal and professional life, a list of surviving relatives, details about the funeral or memorial service, and charity donation suggestions, if any.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Many newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary because it is considered a type of classified advertisement. The cost varies depending on the length of the obituary and the publication's pricing policy.

How can I ensure the obituary is accurate?

Double-check all facts, dates, names, and spellings with reliable family members or official documents. Having someone else review the obituary before submission can also help catch errors.

Can an obituary be written for someone who died several years ago?

Yes, it's never too late to write an obituary for someone who did not have one at the time of their passing. These are often referred to as "memorial obituaries."

What is the appropriate tone for an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and honoring the life of the deceased. It can also reflect the personality of the deceased by being more formal, lighthearted, or even humorous if appropriate.

How do I start writing an obituary?

Begin with a factual statement about the death, then include biographical information such as employment, accomplishments, family, and hobbies, and conclude with service details and memorial information.

Should I mention the cause of death in the obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is optional and depends on the wishes of the deceased person's family. Some families choose to include this detail, while others prefer to keep it private.

What should be avoided when writing an obituary?

Avoid including overly personal or sensitive information that the family may not wish to publicize. Also, be cautious about including details that might lead to identity theft, such as exact birthdate or mother's maiden name.

How long should an obituary be?

There's no strict rule, but obituaries typically range from a few sentences to a few hundred words. The length may be influenced by the newspaper's guidelines or the life story of the deceased.

Can an obituary include photographs?

Yes, most newspapers and online platforms allow for the inclusion of a photograph with an obituary. Some may charge an additional fee for this option.

Is it acceptable to not have an obituary?

Yes, it is a personal choice, and some families may choose to commemorate their loved ones in different ways, such as through a private ceremony or a living memorial.

How can I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Contact the publication directly to inquire about their submission process, which may involve filling out a form, providing the written obituary, and consenting to their publication fees.

What are the benefits of publishing an obituary?

An obituary serves to inform the community of the person's passing, invite people to any services, celebrate the life lived, and provide closure to those grieving. It also serves as a historical record for future generations.

Can the family decide who is mentioned in the obituary?

Yes, the family has complete discretion over the content of the obituary, including who is mentioned by name and the relationships that are highlighted.

What if there's a mistake in the published obituary?

If there's an error, contact the publication as soon as possible. Most will make reasonable efforts to correct significant errors in print or online versions.

Can we include a charity for donations in the obituary?

Yes, it is common for obituaries to suggest a charity or fund for donations in lieu of flowers. This information should be clearly specified with the correct name and contact details of the organization.

Is it necessary to include full names of surviving family members?

Including full names is not necessary and depends on the family's preference. Some opt to only mention the relationship to the deceased (e.g., beloved mother of…), while others may choose to include first names or initials for privacy reasons.
