Margaret "Peggy" Pamela Meyer - March 07, 1947 - April 18, 2022

Departed: 04/18/2022 (Taylorsville)
Obituary Preview: Margaret “Peggy” Pamela Meyer March 7, 1947 – April 18, 2022
Peggy Meyer of Taylorsville, NC, died peacefully the day after Easter, surrounded by the love and care of close friends following a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Charlotte, NC to George M. Meyer, Jr. and Margaret Hoover Meyer. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, George M. Meyer.
Baptized as an infant during her first Advent and Christmas season, Peggy’s faith grew and matured over her entire life. She was an active part of the church family and life of Taylorsville Presbyterian Church in recent years where she made her home in faith and practice.
Education and life-long learning were hallmarks of Peggy. From her days as a young student at Dilworth Elementary and Sedgefield Junior High Schools to her graduation from Meyers Park High School, Peggy enjoyed schooling and fully immersed herself in those student bodies. She advanced her education by completing her Bachelor of Arts at UNC-Charlotte and then her Master of Public Affairs at NC State. As a consummate reader and a student of the natural world, she trained as an herbalist later in life and gained much knowledge and education about flora and fauna in the NC mountains and foothills.
Peggy’s career spanned more than 30 years serving the State of NC as a Probation and Parole Officer. She loved her work and sought to make a positive difference in the lives of all she encountered. She received commendations for her outstanding work with drunk drivers. Her good work and life of service even led to her being awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by NC Governor, Mike Easley in May of 2004 at the luncheon celebrating her retirement.
Following her retirement, Peggy embraced the life of a shepherd. She raised a variety of animals on her farms in Ashe and Alexander Counties and took seriously her role as caretaker and shepherd for her flocks. This was a role, that for Peggy, was always rooted in her faith and spirituality. She loved the 23rd Psalm as well as the many other Biblical references to God as our shepherd. That calling followed her all the days of her life as she loved on and arranged surrogate shepherds for her critters when she became unable to physically tend them herself.
Among her many accomplishments and endeavors, Peggy served as President and founding member of the Charlotte Herb Guild and was a board member and Secretary of the NC Herb Association. She also maintained an active membership of the Central Carolina Poodle Club and was a long-time supporter of Carolina Poodle Rescue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often including a brief biography of their life, information about the upcoming funeral or memorial service, and details about the surviving family members. It is commonly published in newspapers and on online memorial sites.

Why is it important to write an obituary?

Writing an obituary serves several purposes: it's a form of acknowledgment of the person's passing, a way to inform friends and the community of the death, and a chance to celebrate and honor the life of the deceased. It also provides a historical record of the individual's life.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Typically, a close family member writes the obituary, but it could also be penned by a friend, a funeral director, or a professional writer engaged by the family.

What are the key components of an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, their age, date of birth and death, a brief account of their personal life and accomplishments, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving family members. It may also contain special messages or quotes.

How do I start writing an obituary?

Begin by gathering facts about the deceased's life, including important dates, places of residence, and significant achievements. Talk to family and friends to collect personal stories and insights that would honor the memory of the loved one.

What is the typical length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary widely, but typically it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. The length often depends on space availability in the publication and the life story of the individual.

Can an obituary include a photograph?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. The photo can be a recent one or a picture that best represents how the family wishes to remember their loved one.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

It is advisable to publish an obituary soon after the death, ideally within a week. This helps to timely inform distant friends and relatives who may wish to attend the funeral or memorial services.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

No, it is not mandatory to mention the cause of death. The family may choose to include this information if they wish, but they are also entitled to their privacy.

What should not be included in an obituary?

It is best to avoid including sensitive personal information that could lead to identity theft, such as Social Security numbers, home addresses, or any financial information. Also, any details that the family or the deceased would prefer to keep private should not be included.

Does an obituary have to be serious and somber?

Not necessarily. While an obituary is a respectful announcement of death, some families choose to reflect the personality of the deceased with light-hearted anecdotes or a more casual tone, if it feels appropriate.

How do family members agree on the content of an obituary?

Family members should discuss and collaborate on the obituary’s content, potentially drafting it together or appointing one person to write it and then reviewing it collectively before submission.

Can the deceased person write their own obituary before they die?

Yes, it's not uncommon for individuals to pre-write their obituaries or leave instructions for their obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning.

What happens if an obituary contains an error?

If an obituary contains an error, family members can usually contact the publication to submit a corrected version, though some publications may charge a fee for re-printing or revising the obituary.

How does one submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, first identify the preferred publication or website and then follow their specific guidelines for submission, which can typically be found on their website or by contacting the publication directly.

How are funeral service details incorporated into an obituary?

Funeral service details are generally included towards the end of the obituary and should contain the date, time, and location of the service, as well as any visitation hours or special instructions for attendees.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, most newspapers charge a fee based on the length of the obituary and any additional features, such as photographs. Fees can vary widely, so it’s best to inquire with the specific publication.

How does one ensure an obituary reaches the intended audience?

Aside from newspaper publication, sharing the obituary on social media, sending it directly via email or mail, or posting it on online memorials are effective ways to reach a broader audience.

Can an obituary be published in multiple locations?

Yes, families can choose to publish obituaries in multiple newspapers, especially if the deceased lived in different places or has a wide network of friends and relatives.

Are there templates or services that can help in writing an obituary?

Many funeral homes offer templates and guidance for writing obituaries, and there are also online resources available, which provide samples and tips for crafting the announcement.

How can an obituary reflect the unique personality of the deceased?

An obituary can reflect the deceased's personality through the tone of the writing, sharing their hobbies, passions, humor, favorite quotes, or any distinctive traits that made them who they were.
