Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online platforms. It serves as a public announcement and often includes a brief account of the deceased person's life, information about the upcoming funeral or memorial service, and can also contain messages of remembrance from loved ones. Obituaries serve as a way to both inform the community of a loss and to celebrate the life of the individual who has passed.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of a person's life and typically includes biographical details, achievements, and information about surviving family members. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter announcement that provides basic information such as the person's name, date of passing, and details of the funeral service, often without an in-depth life history or list of survivors.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or, occasionally, by an assigned staff writer at a publication. In some cases, people write their own obituaries before they pass away. The authorship varies and is often influenced by how the obituary is being published and who feels capable or responsible for creating the tribute.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should generally include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life story, significant achievements, information about surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial services, and optionally, a special message or a thank you note to those who provided care or support.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely depending on the platform it is published on and the life story of the individual being memorialized. There is no set rule, but most obituaries typically run between 200 to 500 words. Is there a standard structure to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no strict format, most obituaries follow a general structure that includes an introduction with the announcement of death, followed by biographical details, family information, service details, and a closing message or acknowledgment. Some people may choose to include quotes, poems, or personal anecdotes to reflect the personality of the deceased.

Are obituaries fact-checked?

However, the responsibility for the accuracy of most of the information typically lies with the family or individual submitting the obituary.

Can I include a photograph in an obituary?

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

The timing can be influenced by publication schedules and the time needed to gather important details and prepare the writing.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to share this information, while others may opt for privacy. There is no requirement to disclose the cause of death in an obituary.

What if I can't afford to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

If the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper is prohibitive, consider other outlets such as free online obituary sites, social media platforms, or community bulletin boards. Some funeral homes also include posting an obituary on their website as part of their services.

How do I write a meaningful obituary for a loved one?

What are common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include providing inaccurate information, spelling errors, leaving out important family members or service details, and not proofreading the final text. It is also important to strike the right tone, being respectful and honoring the life of the person without being overly formal or casual, unless that is what best represents them.

Should an obituary mention charitable donations?

If the deceased or the family wishes to encourage donations to a specific charity in lieu of flowers, this can be mentioned in the obituary. Provide the name and, if possible, contact information or a link to where donations can be made.

Can an obituary be too personal?

How do we choose the right tone for an obituary?

The tone will often reflect the personality and wishes of the deceased. Some obituaries may lean towards the formal, while others may be more casual or even humorous. Consider the life being honored, the preferences of the family, and the expectations of the intended audience when determining the tone.

What is the purpose of the final sentence in an obituary?
