Gary "Jimmy" James Rice - August 30, 1942 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Cumberland)
Obituary Preview: Gary “Jimmy” James Rice, born August 30, 1942, passed away April 4, 2024, at UMPC in Cumberland. He was the son of the late George C Rice and Cleo K (Miller) Rice. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years: Martha E (Sheehe) Rice; his son: Christopher C Rice; son-in-law: Lance “Chip” Steelman; a brother: Ed Widdows; 2 sisters-in-law: Shirley Widdows and Dianne Wensel; a brother in-law: Floyd Wensel; and three wonderful nephews: Bruce Widdows, Jeff Widdows and Andy Wensel.
Jim leaves behind three daughters: Kelly Llewellyn and husband, Dan; Kerry Steelman, Katie Rice (Jake Deremer); his nine grandkids: Daniel Llewellyn, Kristin Llewellyn, Jenna Beeman and husband, Matt, Casey Llewellyn, Ila Steelman, Thaddeus Deremer, Byron Deremer, Madeline Deremer, Chase Deremer; and two great-grandkids: Penelope and Delilah.
Jim was born and raised in Cumberland. He graduated from Fort Hill High School, Class of 1961, where he played basketball and baseball. He continued to play baseball for many years within various leagues. Jim also continued to show his love of basketball as a referee. He followed that passion for over two decades, officiating at both the high school and college levels. He worked for 20 years at Kelly Springfield and later for 16 years at Rocky Gap Golf Course. During his time at Rocky Gap, he made many new friends. It was here that he found a new hobby; hunting for golf balls. He spent many hours sorting, washing, and then reselling them and many referred to him as “the ball guy.” He loved his Rocky Gap family and spoke about them often. Dad had two life-long friends, Allan Stevenson and Pat Zumpano. His loving sister-in-law, Leslee Walters, was monumental to his care in his last weeks.
Jim never met a stranger or had a negative word to say about anyone. He loved his family deeply and showed us by being “present.” When he was talking to you, he was genuinely interested and engaged. There was never a doubt that he loved you. He was constantly making his rounds with a helping hand, never turning down a request to run an errand, mow a lawn or transport a grandkid. He was passionate about sports and the great outdoors, but most especially golf, where he was able to fulfill both. He instilled his passion for golf in his kids as we were raised, putting into a plastic cup at the end of the hallway and pitching onto the sofa (Mom never did figure out why we would have random pictures hung to hide the dents).
To know Jim was to love him. He had countless friends, young and old, and every one of them will tell you when they think of him, they smile or laugh reminiscing about one of his stories or jokes or just one of his quick-witted one-liners. He loved Bedford Rd VFD bingo, the Pirates and rooting for WVU and MD basketball. Jim was a self-less man, our Dad/Pappy, golf buddy, our rock, our comedic relief and sarcasm coach and the one person that you knew would show up, day or night, for whatever you needed and without a single complaint. He will be truly missed.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

How does one begin the process of writing an obituary?
