Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in a newspaper or online. It includes a brief account of the deceased person's life, their accomplishments, the family members they leave behind, and details about the funeral or memorial services.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, they are not the same. A death notice is a shorter, more factual announcement of a person's death, often outlining the bare essentials like name, age, and the date of passing. Obituaries include more detail and often convey a narrative about the person's life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by a family member, a close friend, or funeral home personnel. Sometimes, if the deceased was a prominent figure, a newspaper staff or professional writer may write the obituary.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary serves as a formal announcement of death to the community, and it helps in notifying friends, acquaintances, and colleagues about the passing. It also acts as a historical record and a homage to the deceased's life.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should ideally include the full name of the deceased, their age at death, date and place of birth, date and place of death, a summary of their life story, accomplishments, information about their family, and details of the funeral or memorial services.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. It can be a short paragraph for a basic death notice or several paragraphs for a more detailed account of the person's life. It largely depends on the publication's restrictions and the family's preferences.

Who decides where an obituary is published?

The family of the deceased usually decides where the obituary is published, often with assistance from the funeral home. They can choose local newspapers, online platforms, or both.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies depending on the publication. Newspapers often charge by the word, by the inch, or have flat rates, plus additional fees for photos. Online obituaries can be less expensive or even free on certain platforms.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary?

No, publishing an obituary is not a legal requirement. It is a personal choice made by the family to honor the deceased and inform the community of their passing.

What is the benefit of publishing an obituary online?

Online obituaries can reach a wider audience, are not limited by geographical location, and can be more cost-effective. They also allow for multimedia elements like photos, videos, and the opportunity for readers to leave condolences and share memories.

How can I write a heartfelt obituary?

To write a heartfelt obituary, express genuine emotions and recollect fond memories of the deceased. Include personal touches, anecdotes, and unique traits that paint a picture of who they were. Highlight their relationships and the legacy they leave behind.

What are common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Avoid incorrect information, spelling and grammar errors, focusing too much on sad details, and neglecting to mention significant parts of the person's life or family. It's crucial to fact-check and proofread the obituary before publishing.

Can funeral homes help with writing an obituary?

Yes, many funeral homes offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries. They can provide templates, suggest standard formats, and handle the submission to newspapers and online platforms on behalf of the family.

What if I can't afford to publish an obituary?

For those who cannot afford the cost of publication in a newspaper, consider free options like online obituary websites, social media, or faith-based organization newsletters.

Can an obituary be edited after it is published?

Once an obituary is published in a newspaper, it cannot usually be edited. However, online obituaries often allow for edits and updates. It's best to contact the publication for their specific policy.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families choose to include it, particularly if they want to raise awareness about a particular illness or condition. However, many obituaries simply note the passing without specifying the cause.

Is it acceptable to ask for donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes, it is common to request donations for a charity or cause that was important to the deceased, in lieu of flowers. This can be stated clearly at the end of the obituary.

How do I choose a photo for the obituary?

Choose a photo that reflects the personality and spirit of the deceased. It's often a recent photo that shows them at their best. Some families opt for older photos that evoke happy memories.

What should we do if there's a mistake in the obituary?

If there's a mistake, contact the publication immediately to see if a correction can be made. For online obituaries, corrections are typically easier to apply.

Are there different cultural practices regarding obituaries?

Yes, cultural practices regarding obituaries vary widely. Some cultures have specific traditions and practices for announcing and mourning a death. It's essential to consider these cultural aspects when planning and writing an obituary.

Can I include a personal message or poem in the obituary?

Absolutely. A personal message, poem, or quote can add a special touch to an obituary and further personalize it to reflect the essence of the deceased. It's essential to keep the overall length considered, however, especially for print publications.
