Kim Sweatt - June 01, 1960 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Odessa)
Obituary Preview: Kim Sweatt, a man who lived his life at the same speed as his beloved Formula 1 races, has completed his final lap on this earthly circuit. Born on June 1, 1960, in the small town of Kermit, TX, Kim revved through life's twists and turns until his peaceful pit stop on March 28, 2024, in Midland, TX.Kim's journey began as the son of the late Rual Moody and Linda Sweatt Nunez, who knew he would be cared for when adopted by Louie and Helen Sweatt, who have predeceased him in death. He was also the stepson to the late RV Nunez, all who are no doubt co-piloting with Kim on his celestial road trip. With a wit as sharp as his taste in cars, Kim often joked that he graduated from "Harvard on the hill," but his Associates in Liberal Arts from Odessa College was no laughing matter. He prided himself on being the Director of Sales for a natural gas company, where he was known to fuel both the business and the occasional office prank.A man of many titles, Kim was the Capitan of the Scooter Patrol, a title self-bestowed and unanimously unchallenged. His Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Shiner affiliations were no secret, as he was a regular sight driving the Bucking Car in the Shiner Parade, his laughter as infectious as the joy he brought to those spectacles.Married to Gail Sweatt, on July 3, 2020, in Robert Lee, TX, their union was a grand prix of love and laughter. Kim leaves behind a pit crew of family who will miss his light-hearted spirit: his wife Gail; his mother Linda Nunez; his sons Louie Sweatt II, Lee Carter and wife Calley, Lane Carter, Ves Slone, and Bryson Shirley; his daughter Kimberlee Hurt and husband John; his brother Brian Moore; his sister Keri Love; and his treasured granddaughter Leelah Sweatt, who undoubtedly was the turbo boost in his life. He also leaves behind the mother of Kimberlee and Louie, Pat Sweatt.Kim's need for speed wasn't just metaphorical. He had a love affair with anything that could go from zero to sixty in the blink of an eye. Corvettes, Ferraris, and motorcycles weren't just modes of transportation; they were extensions of his own spirited soul. But it wasn't just about speed; it was about the thrill of life. He collected firearms, watches, and clocks, not because he was concerned with time ticking away, but because he cherished every moment.Music was the soundtrack of Kim's life, and he was always ready to rock out at a concert. He was cool with being a dad, but if you wanted to see his face light up like the dashboard of a '67 Corvette, you just had to mention his role as PaPa. His granddaughter Leelah was the light in his life.Kim cared about taking care of people. Kim had a heart as big as Texas itself, always making sure to take care of everyone, whether they were family, friends, or strangers in need of a smile. He lived life in the fast lane but knew when to slow down for the important moments. He was a man who could turn a humdrum day into a rollicking adventure with just a twist of the throttle and a well-timed joke. As he takes his place in the great race in the sky, we can almost hear him chuckle, "I may have had to leave the party early, but I took the scenic route. Raise a glass to Kim—a man who knew that the best way to enjoy the race was not just to drive, but to ride it with laughter, love, and a touch of mischief. Kim Sweatt, you will be missed, but boy, what a ride it was.A celebration of Kim’s life will be held at 2:00PM, Monday, April 1, 2024, at the Acres West Funeral Chapel. The family has requested in honor of Kim please wear bright colors or overalls to represent the bright life he led throughout the years.

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Odessa)
Obituary Preview: Sergio Hernandez of Odessa Tx was born on September 22,1964 and went to be at his forever home with our Lord on March 25, 2024. He came to Texas at only 10 years old. He married Patricia Hernandez August 31,1984 and had two children. Sergio devoted his life to his family, grandchildren and working in the oilfield for over 40 years. He was known to be the best grandpa ever. After long days at work, Sergio was always ready to see his grandchildren "mis hijos" as he would call them. All 5 were his pride and joy and loved their grandpa Sergio just as much as he loved them. There was a special place in his heart for his best friend, his "big boy Dominic". From McDonald's, parks, and the mall on the weekends Sergio was always all about his grandchildren. And their favorite... walking to the school. He loved to BBQ and was known to make the best chicken ever! If not at work; you could find Sergio outside enjoying a beer, his Bluetooth speaker with his BBQ pit going and his grandchildren making memories under his big tree. Not a day went by that he wasn't hard at work for his family. Each day he went to work with perseverance and determination. Never would you hear Sergio complain. Favorite stories of him and his son fishing will forever be cherished; taking his wife out on the weekends for breakfast and shopping was another favorite thing he enjoyed very much.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often including a brief biography of the deceased, details about the funeral or memorial services, and information about survivors. It serves as a way to inform the community and honor the memory of the individual who has passed away.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local or national newspapers, but in the digital age, they are also commonly found on online memorial sites, social media platforms, and the deceased's loved ones' personal social profiles.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary typically includes more detailed information, such as a biography, achievements, and personal anecdotes, whereas a death notice is a simpler announcement that confirms the death and provides basic details about funeral arrangements.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary is usually written by a close family member, friend, or a professional writer at the request of the family. Some individuals even choose to write their own obituaries before they pass away.

What are the key elements that should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should ideally include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief summary of their life and achievements, family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and information on where to send donations or condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it typically ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs, taking into account the space limitations of the publication and the amount of information the family wishes to share.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and is not required. Families may choose to include this information for transparency or to raise awareness about certain illnesses or conditions, or they may opt to keep it private.

Can an obituary be rejected by a newspaper?

Yes, a newspaper may reject an obituary that does not meet its submission guidelines, has inappropriate content, or if the family cannot verify the death. Each publication has its own policies and standards for accepting obituaries.

What details can be included to personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, families can include anecdotes, quotes, personal interests, hobbies, favorite memories, and unique characteristics that capture the essence of the deceased. This adds a more intimate and human touch to the announcement.

Should you mention the deceased's pets in an obituary?

Yes, if the deceased had a special bond with their pets, mentioning them in the obituary can highlight a significant relationship in the person's life. It's a way to paint a fuller picture of their love and companionship.

Is it appropriate to include a photo with the obituary?

It is certainly appropriate and often encouraged to include a photograph with the obituary. The photo can be a recent one or from an earlier, significant period in the deceased's life. It provides a visual remembrance for those who knew the person.

How do you choose an obituary photo?

Choose a photo that best captures the essence of the deceased. It should be a high-quality, clear image that shows the individual's personality and how the family wishes to remember them. Consider a photo where the deceased looks happy and at ease.

What should you do if you find an error in a published obituary?

If you notice an error in a published obituary, contact the publication immediately to request a correction. Most newspapers and online sites are willing to correct factual errors in a timely manner.

How should survivors be listed in an obituary?

Survivors should typically be listed in descending familial order, starting with the closest relations such as a spouse, children, grandchildren, followed by siblings, and parents if applicable. Close friends and significant others can be included as deemed appropriate by the family.

Can you include charitable donations requests in an obituary?

Yes, it is common for obituaries to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be directed to a specific charity that was meaningful to the deceased or that supports a cause related to their life or death.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should ideally be published within a week of the death to inform the community and to allow for arrangements to be made for attending the funeral or memorial service. However, the timing can vary based on the publication schedules and the family's readiness.

Are there any cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Cultural and religious traditions may influence the content and tone of an obituary. It is important to respect these practices, which may involve specific wording or details included or omitted, according to the customs of the deceased's culture or religion.

Can an obituary include a request for privacy?

Yes, it is acceptable for an obituary to include a request for privacy if the family wishes not to have public services or prefers to mourn in private. This should be stated respectfully, letting readers know that the family thanks them for their thoughts but requests to be allowed to grieve privately.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

It's recommended to avoid including private information that could lead to identity theft, such as the deceased's home address, birth date, or mother's maiden name. Also, refraining from including any contentious or overly personal information that could offend family members or the public is advisable.

How do you address payment for an obituary?

Most newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary, which can vary depending on the length of the text and whether a photo is included. The funeral home handling the arrangements can often assist with the submission process and may include the cost in their services, or it can be paid directly to the publication.

What if the deceased didn't want an obituary published?

If the deceased explicitly expressed a wish not to have an obituary published, it is important to honor that request. In such cases, information about the death can be communicated privately to friends and relatives without a public notice.
