Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in a newspaper or online. It includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may also contain a message of remembrance from the family.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary serves as an important record for friends, family, and the community to acknowledge the loss, celebrate the life lived, and learn about the details of any services or memorials. It can also be a part of the historical and genealogical record.

What details are usually included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age, the date of their death, a summary of their life achievements, information on their family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and possibly a photo.

Can obituaries be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including funeral home websites, online newspaper obituary sections, and dedicated memorial sites. Online obituaries can often incorporate multimedia elements, like videos and photo galleries.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by a close family member or friend, but sometimes they are written by the funeral home staff. In the case of prominent individuals, a newspaper staff writer or journalist may compose the obituary.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should ideally be published within a few days of a death, particularly if it includes details of a forthcoming funeral or memorial service to give people enough notice to attend.

Are obituaries verified for accuracy?

Yes, most newspapers and online services require verification of death, often through a funeral home or with a death certificate, before publishing an obituary. This helps prevent fraudulent or erroneous postings.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often charge by length or number of days it will run, while many online sites offer free or lower-cost options.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and is not mandatory. Some families choose to include this information, while others prefer to keep it private.

How long should an obituary be?

Length can vary, but obituaries typically range from a few sentences to several paragraphs. The length may depend on the publication’s guidelines, the cost, and the amount of information the family wishes to include.

Should an obituary include a photo?

Including a photo is optional, but it can be a nice way to personalize an obituary and help readers identify the person being remembered. Most publications offer the choice to include a photograph for an additional fee.

Can we publish an obituary for someone who died a long time ago?

Yes, you can publish an obituary for someone who died a long time ago, often referred to as a memorial notice, especially if an obituary was never originally published or the family wants to commemorate an anniversary of the death.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a more straightforward announcement of a person's death and the upcoming funeral arrangements, often paid for and placed in the newspaper by the family. An obituary is longer and includes a biographical sketch of the deceased.

How do we handle disagreements about the content of an obituary?

It’s best to resolve disagreements about the obituary content through open and empathetic conversation among family members. The decisions should ultimately respect the wishes of the deceased (if known) and be agreed upon by those closest to them.

Can you include charitable donation requests in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be specified in the obituary with the name and address or website of the charity.

What should be done if there is an error in the published obituary?

If there is an error in a published obituary, contact the publication immediately to correct the information. Most newspapers will correct significant errors in the next edition or through an updated online post.

Is it appropriate to share personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Sharing personal anecdotes can add a unique and heartfelt touch to an obituary, highlighting the deceased’s personality and life experiences. However, it’s important to be mindful of the tone and length when including such details.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary?

If the deceased explicitly expressed not wanting an obituary, their wishes should be respected. Communication with close family and friends can be made through other means to inform them of the death and any arrangements.

Can friends or community members contribute to writing an obituary?

Absolutely. Friends and community members can contribute to an obituary by sharing memories and stories with the family, which can be incorporated into the tribute. This can provide a more complete picture of the individual's impact and legacy.

Are there any cultural considerations to keep in mind when writing an obituary?

Yes, different cultures may have specific customs and traditions regarding death notices and public remembrance. It’s important to be sensitive to these practices and, if necessary, seek guidance from cultural or religious leaders.

How can I publish an obituary if I am not in the same location as the deceased?

Many funeral homes offer to assist with the publication of obituaries both locally and in newspapers where the deceased lived or had family. Additionally, online obituary submission options allow for remote publishing regardless of your location.

Can an obituary be updated or modified after it has been published?

Once an obituary is published in print, it typically cannot be modified. However, online obituaries can often be updated or edited by contacting the website administrator or following the site's specific procedures.
