Michael Lee Gold (Mike), a beloved history teacher at Putnam City School District, dedicated coach, Husband, Father, and Grandfather, left this world on November 2, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on August 31, 1947, in Houston, Texas, to his parents Fred and Betty Gold. Mike’s passion for teaching and coaching led him to an everlasting impact on the lives of countless students and his players. He attended John Brown University, where he developed a love for learning that he shared with his students over his years at Putnam City School District. While attending John Brown, Mike played basketball and baseball where he was soon drafted into the MLB. This however was put aside as he was drafted for the Vietnam War. Thankfully, Mike never had to deploy. On December 22, 1973, Mike married the love of his life, Susan Gayle Phillips. Together, they created a loving home for their children, Michael Ryan Gold and Jamie Lee  Cope. Mike was a devoted father who cherished every moment spent with his family and loved to watch them compete in their respective sports. He was so proud of Ryan and Jamie and all of their accomplishments.
Mike’s legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, and his brother. Steve Gold, his brother, his wife  Deb, and his children and grandchildren. Ryan Gold, his son, is married to Kari Gold, and they have four children, Kenley, Blaine, Gavin, and Talon. Jamie Cope, his daughter, is married to Josh Cope, and they have three children, Blake and his wife Madison, Jake, and Brynlee. Mike found immense joy in his role as a grandparent and took pride in his grandchildren's achievements and activities. His favorite thing to do was watch his grandchildren play in his back pasture or go across the pond to watch them learn how to play in the outdoors. Mike enjoyed fishing, working on and shooting his guns, and riding his tractor  around his property. Along with these hobbies, Mike also enjoyed leatherwork and woodwork. He created many chests and pieces of furniture for his family that they will have forever in his memory.
Mike was a God-fearing, competitive, funny, kind, and compassionate man whose presence left an impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passion for learning, coaching, fishing, and watching his children and grandchildren grow will be remembered for generations to come. Most importantly, his love for Susan will always be remembered as they created a beautiful life together that their loved ones get to celebrate forever. Mike was greeted at the Gates of Heaven by his parents, Fred and Betty Gold, his Mother, and Father-in-law, Howard Boyd Philips his wife Anna Lee Philips, his brother-in-law Bill Philips, and his grandson Michael Blaine Gold.
Mike’s desire was for a quiet farewell without a formal service. In lieu of a traditional ceremony and floral tributes, the family is kindly requesting contributions to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Mike battled the disease for numerous years, and supporting research for a cure in his name would be a meaningful tribute to his enduring spirit. https://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/PFFTribute/MikeGold (https://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/PFFTribute/MikeGold)
Please join us in remembering and celebrating the remarkable life of Michael Lee Gold. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love and gratitude.

June Lewter - August 26, 1932 - October 25, 2023

Departed: 10/25/2023 (Oklahoma City)
Obituary Preview: June Anderson Lewter gained her angel wings on October 25th, 2023, in Oklahoma City, OK. June had recently celebrated her 91st birthday!  On August 26th,1932 June Anderson was born in Pampa Texas to Grant & Flossie Anderson. She would be their only child.  She was talented and adventurous in many aspects of her life. She was a master of sewing, teaching, procrastination, an avid reader, and an amazing caregiver.  When June wasn't reading or sewing on her projects, she could be found volunteering, teaching someone or caring for someone in her family. Not a day went by where June didn't talk about how much her family and friends meant to her family is small but mighty and was arguably her most important achievement in life. June is survived by her son and wife, Robert L. Lewter & DeLanna, her granddaughter and husband Robin L. Haley & Sean and June’s great-grandsons- Conner L. Haley and Ashton C. Haley.  June was preceded in death by her parents, Grant & Flossie Anderson, her husband, Ronald L. Lewter, her daughter Cynthia Ann Lewter-Harrington. June had many cousins and countless friends that she held dear to her heart and enjoyed spending time with over the years. Having been an only child - she spent most of her time around other adults, at her parents' retail clothing and custom boot store - any time she could manage she would go to the library in Pampa.  She spent many hours reading books at the local library in Pampa. She always had multiple books going at once. She loved to be around her cousins and her grandmother-Mama Johnson! She and Ronald married in 1948, then the birth of Cynthia and Robert made their family complete.  The family moved many times around West Texas and endured many road trips making memories together! She was the girl scout leader for Cynthia and the Den-Mom for Robert as they grew up. Later in life, June spent a big portion of her life caring for others, whether it was standing guard in a hospital room to someone who was sick, making soul warming soups, having just the right words - She had a way of knowing what helped someone else feel cared for.  Sometimes she would offer to just come sit with you, not requiring conversation or pleasantries! In Odessa, She and other ladies created an organization Interfaith Community Services that held sewing classes teaching young ladies how to sew - to be able support their families in an economical way. She always wanted to teach anyone who had an interest. At 39 years old she was told by the doctors at MD Anderson in Houston she may not see her 40th birthday, being told that made an impression on her! She enjoyed each year of aging gracefully.  She never took any day for granted. And she would say “Use your “Good” things every day- don't wait for a special occasion - each day IS a special occasion.”  She meant use the China every day, use your good towels every day, eat the chocolate, enjoy the sunrises and the new blooms on a flower- take pride in seeing the little bunnies and squirrels in the yard. And most importantly don't hold grudges.  Say what you mean, when it needs to be said, then move on. She was a dedicated wife and mother- she took pride in her family but after her time as a homemaker, she excelled in the Clothing industry as a Sales Rep.  Spending time traveling and at the Market was a fun time for her.  She was the first woman Rep in the Men’s Western Wear Industry, and she was proud of that! In 1961 as a young adult, she joined Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, this was a major cornerstone of her life.  She volunteered, learned, and leaned on the ladies of her local sorority through all her many seasons!   So much as she achieved one of the highest awards of 60 years of membership.  During that time, she made lifelong friendships, even after moving from Odessa, TX to Oklahoma - Beta Sigma Phi was a constant for June, she was able to find a chapter in Oklahoma City that proved to be just as special as the one she left in Texas. June's life would seem too short to those close to her, but those of us who were blessed to be touched by her understand that her existence and the imprint she left on our hearts exceed the quantity of time that she stayed here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief account of the deceased person's life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and the names of surviving family members.

Why do we write obituaries?

Obituaries are written to inform the community of a person's passing and to celebrate their life. They serve as a historical record and provide closure for friends and family. Additionally, obituaries help to notify distant relatives, friends, and the deceased person’s acquaintances who might not be reached otherwise.

Who can write an obituary?

Anyone close to the deceased, such as a family member or a close friend, can write an obituary. In some cases, individuals may write their obituaries in advance as part of their estate planning.

What are the key components of an obituary?

An obituary generally includes the deceased's full name, age, place of residence, date of death, cause of death (optional), a brief overview of their life and achievements, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving family members.

How do I start writing an obituary?

Start by collecting the factual information such as the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, and details about the funeral services. Outline the key points you want to address, such as their life, legacy, and loved ones, then begin writing in a respectful and honorable tone.

What length should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but often it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. The length may be influenced by the publication's guidelines or space limitations, the life of the deceased, and costs associated with longer obituaries, especially in print.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are now published online on various platforms, including newspaper websites, memorial sites, and social media. Online obituaries can be more detailed and less restricted by space constraints than print obituaries.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal decision and is not required. Some families prefer to include this information, especially if the deceased was a public figure or the death was sudden. Others may choose to keep this information private.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Newspapers often charge by the line, column inch, or word count. Online publications may have different pricing structures, including some free options.

What are the common styles of obituaries?

Common styles of obituaries include the traditional format, which focuses on the deceased's biography and family; the life story format, which emphasizes personal anecdotes and memories; and the modern format, which may be less formal and include unique details or photos.

Can I include personal anecdotes or stories in an obituary?

Absolutely. Personal anecdotes or memories can add depth to an obituary and celebrate the uniqueness of the deceased. However, it is important to choose stories that are both meaningful and appropriate for the public nature of an obituary.

Should an obituary include information about donations or memorial contributions?

If the family prefers donations to flowers or wants to direct contributions to a specific charity, this information can be included in the obituary. It's a way to honor the deceased's memory and support causes they cared about.

How can I ensure the accuracy of the information in an obituary?

Double-check all facts, including the spelling of names, dates, and locations. It can be helpful to have another family member or someone who knew the deceased well review the obituary for accuracy before publication.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is a brief announcement of death that may list funeral service details, which is often paid for by the family. An obituary is more detailed and comprehensive, often including a biography and personal reflections.

Can I update an obituary after it has been published?

In print publications, an obituary cannot usually be updated once published. However, online obituaries may offer the flexibility to edit or add information after initial publication.

While there are no specific legal requirements for writing an obituary, it is important to be truthful and respect the privacy of the deceased and their family. Avoid including sensitive personal information that could lead to identity theft or other issues.

What should be done if a key fact in the obituary is incorrect?

If a key fact is incorrect, contact the publication as soon as possible to request a correction. For online obituaries, you may be able to make the correction directly or reach out to the website administrator.

How can I handle negative aspects of the deceased's life in the obituary?

An obituary should honor the deceased. While it is not necessary to omit all negative aspects, focus on recounting the positive contributions and legacy of the individual. It is common practice to handle sensitive topics with discretion and respect in obituaries.

Is it appropriate to include humor in an obituary?

If it reflects the personality of the deceased and is in good taste, a touch of humor can be appropriate. However, it is essential to consider the feelings of all who will read the obituary and maintain the respect and dignity of the occasion.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published as soon as possible after death, often within a few days. This allows enough time for people to be notified and make arrangements to attend any services. However, there is no set rule, and the timing may vary based on circumstances.

Should children and grandchildren be listed by name in an obituary?

It is a personal choice whether to list children and grandchildren by name in an obituary. Some families prefer to name all members, while others choose to list just the number of descendants. Consider space limitations and privacy concerns when making this decision.
