Departed: 04/12/2024 (Fairfield)
Obituary Preview: Bernard Pollack, age 92 of West Haven, CT passed away peacefully at Yale New Haven Hospital on Friday April 12, 2024. Bernie was born on April 22, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Son of Harry and Fay Pollack. The family relocated to Bridgeport, CT in the late 1930's. A graduate of Bridgeport Central High School, Bernie went on to graduate from the University of Bridgeport with a Bachelor of Science Degree, Majoring in Accounting. In March of 1952, Bernie and his brother Norm enlisted into the United States Air Force, serving together during the Korean War. Receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal during his tour, Bernie was Honorably Discharged in 1956 at the rank of Sergeant. On September 1, 1957, Dad married the love of his life, my mother! In 1958, Dad went to work for Harvey Hubbell Wiring Device Division in Bridgeport. In the 1970's, now under the name Hubbell, building a new corporate headquarters in Orange, Dad was asked to join the corporate team. Dad had a long and prosperous career with Hubbell, a Fortune 500 Company where he worked for 50 years. In his company wide retirement email, it read: "I will miss you all. Even the Yankee fans!" Besides his long career, his longest and dearest friend, Joe Shea came from Hubbell. A friendship that has lasted over 6 decades! Dad was a sports enthusiast in general, a Brooklyn Dodger fan growing up and transitioning to the Mets in the 1960's. A Jet fan until the end! Dad enjoyed all sports. Dad and his brother Norm were Co-Captains of the JCC basketball team. Dad, his brothers and other family members also bowled for B'NAI B'RITH in Bridgeport. Dad enjoyed many things but what got the biggest smiles and laughs was when he was with his family! Dad truly loved his family! Several days before Dad's death, I asked him who the President was to see if he was lucid. Dad's response was; he rolled his head towards me, smiled and said, NOT TRUMP! And then started laughing! Dad was clearly "ALL" there until the very end!
Bernie is survived by his son Robert Pollack of West Haven. All his siblings live in Florida. Norm Pollack (Elaine), Libby Statsky (Bernie-Predeceased), Paul Pollack (Cherie), his Brother In-laws Harvey Cutler (Diane) of East Haven and Bruce Cutler (Louise) of Nevada, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. From the housekeepers, therapists, nurses of all degrees, PA'S, doctors and the dozens of teams that saved my father's life, many times over during those days, I can't thank you enough! Gerald Shenkin - July 06, 1935 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Fairfield)
Obituary Preview: Gerald "Jerry" Shenkin, age 88, of Milford, CT, passed away on April 10, 2024, at Bridgeport Hospital. Born on July 6, 1935 in The Bronx, NY, to the late Benjamin and Sarah (Steele) Shenkin, Jerry led a life marked by adventure, dedication, and leadership. Jerry's journey into a remarkable career began after studying Industrial Engineering at New York University. His early career took an exciting turn at NBC, where he worked on live TV commercials for the "Howdy Doody" show in the mid-1950s, showcasing his versatility and creativity. His story about a live Jell-O commercial where the cameraman and the announcer mixed up the colors and flavors for lemon, lime and strawberry Jell-O was hilarious!
Following his time at NBC, Jerry served with distinction in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve. His military career included participating in notable (and then-secret) missions like Operation ARGUS in the South Atlantic/Antarctica and excelling as an Air Cadet when he was in the early stages of Naval Aviation School at Naval Air Station Pensacola, where he ranked near the top of his class in the late 1950s. For a period of time, one of his shipmates was Johnny Cash’s brother! His Navy adventures also brought him to Cuba in 1958 (during the Cuban Revolution) when Fidel Castro was fighting in the foothills; at that time he purchased his “famous” .22 rifle.
After his military service, Jerry embarked on a significant career in industrial engineering, retiring from ITT Flygt, part of ITT Industries' Fluid Technology Division. There, he led environmental, health, and safety audit teams across the ITT Enterprise. His career was also marked by a series of groundbreaking projects. At Simmonds Precision Products Inc, he manufactured instrumentation for the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander, famously piloted by Neil Armstrong. At Duracell Corp, he advanced lithium battery technology for early heart pacemakers and the U.S. military, employing some of the first lasers used in manufacturing (i.e., Coherent Laser Model 001). In the early 1960s, he worked with a Wall Street brokerage firm to install some of the earliest computing technology and to help the firm to collect and extract data from the system; unfortunately, this firm was among the many brokerages caught up in “Great Salad Oil Scandal” of 1962 (another one of his fascinating stories). Jerry also made significant contributions at ASEA Corporation (now ABB), Longines Wittnauer and Sontone, further showcasing his diverse skill set and innovative spirit.
In the early 1980s, in yet another twist, Jerry turned down a job offer to be the plant manager of Pabst Blue Ribbon in Newark, NJ because of the long commute from Westchester County, NY (and the potential for developing a large beer belly). His two sons always liked to reminisce about this missed opportunity.
Post-retirement, for fifteen years Jerry served as a Counselor (and eventually as Chairman) of the New Haven office of SCORE, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration. His leadership and business acumen supported and mentored numerous local businesses, highlighted by some successful turnarounds, as well as a project with one of the Yale University libraries that houses rare book collections.
Jerry is lovingly remembered by his wife of 27 years, Shari L. Peck (with whom he was together for nearly 40 years), his son Todd S. Shenkin from his first marriage, his granddaughters Elle and Gabriela, a vast extended family, and his beloved dog, Gracie. He was preceded in death by his son, the late Dr. Jonathan D. Shenkin, also from his first marriage. Jerry’s first marriage to the late Lynne G. Holstein ended in divorce.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 11:00 AM (visitation begins at 10:00 AM) at The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, CT, with interment following at Loyalty Cemetery, 172 Burroughs Road, Fairfield, CT. Shiva will be observed at the Shenkin-Peck residence in Milford, CT on Tuesday, April 16th from 12pm-2:30pm and 5pm-7:30pm, and on Wednesday, April 17th from 12pm-2:30pm and 5pm-7:30pm.
Memorial contributions in Jerry’s honor can be made either to The Dr. Jonathan D. Shenkin, DDS, MPH Scholarship Fund at Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine (www.bu.edu/dental/alumni/areas-of-support) or to SCORE Foundation (www.score.org).
Jerry's remarkable life, from his contributions at NBC to his pioneering work in engineering and community service, and his profound love for his family and Gracie, will be forever cherished.
