Jeremiah P Harney - Unknown - August 08, 2020

Departed: 08/08/2020 (Wabasha)
Obituary Preview: Jeremiah Patrick Harney, 77, died in his home on August 8, 2020 surrounded by his family.
Born October 16, 1942, he was raised on his family farm.  Theilman’s version of a rebel without a cause, Jeremiah was known for having fun.   In his childhood years you could find him riding horses, tagging along after his big brothers and getting into the occasional fight. He graduated from Wabasha High School in 1960.  Jeremiah, also known as Jerry, or to many “Harney” had a boisterous laugh and hardy hug. He enjoyed his 1965 Harley Sportster and raced stock cars in the local circuit.  He loved his friends and spent many nights with them roaming Wabasha County in search of shenanigans.
On April 17, 1971, he married Mary Lu Pfeilsticker.  During their life together they farmed and raised their daughter Ann.   Life with Jerry on the farm was less than ordinary.  While she would work outside the home, he farmed, took care of the yard, made dinners, baked bread, and helped with laundry.  When she came home she would arrive to an occasional “moon” in the kitchen window.
While farming he also drove for Lloyd Meyer and Bud Meyer Trucklines.  When not farming or trucking he would be hunting, working with his horses or on one of his many Case tractors. He had a tender heart and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for a friend or family member, especially his daughter. The greatest joy in his life was when he became a grandpa.  Aidan Jeremiah was born on his birthday; setting the stage for a life of shared experiences.
Although being asked to not return to St. Felix Catholic School due to too many unserved detentions, he held great respect for the Religious.  A lifelong member of St. Josephs’ Church, he also served on the parish council and was a Trustee for the Church and Cemetery.  After St. Joseph’s Catholic Church became an Oratory, he became an active member of St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha.  There he became a member of the Serra Club, an organization dedicated to the vocation of religious life.
He is survived by his wife Mary Lu, daughter Ann Harney Baxter (Bill) and grandson Aidan.  His siblings Geraldine Tibor (Richard), Robert Harney (Tiny), Genevieve Winters (Cope), David Harney (Karen), Mary Norgaard (David) and Patti Harney-Dwyer (Larry).  Brothers-in-law Jim (Rita), David (Mary), Gerry (Marilyn), Tom (Mary Ann), Steve, Pete (Dolores), Chuck (Deb) and Don (Ann) Pfeilsticker.  He is preceded in death by his parents James G. and Margaret (Ryan) Harney.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 19 from 4-8 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Theilman.  A funeral Mass will follow on Thursday, August 20 at St. Joseph’s at 10:30 a.m.   Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Due to COVid-19, overflow seating will be accommodated under a tent on the church lawn.  Services are entrusted to Abbott Funeral Home, Wabasha MN.  Words of sympathy or remembrance may be left at www.abbottfh.com The family prefers Memorials to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or St. Felix Catholic School.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, usually published in newspapers or online platforms. It includes a brief account of the deceased person's life, information about their surviving family members, and the time and place of the funeral service.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by close family members or friends, but they can also be prepared by funeral directors or professional writers provided by the newspaper or online services.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, age, date of birth, date of death, a brief overview of their life story, significant achievements, information about surviving relatives, and details about the funeral or memorial services.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is typically shorter and just announces the death and provides funeral service details. An obituary is more comprehensive and includes biographical details and personal anecdotes.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is generally published within a week after death, but the timing can vary based on the family's wishes or any delays in funeral arrangements.

Where can I find obituaries?

Obituaries are often published in local newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on various online obituary platforms. Many newspapers also archive obituaries online.

Can anyone write and submit an obituary?

Yes, as long as the submission follows the publication's guidelines, anyone close to the deceased can write and submit an obituary.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

No fixed standard exists, but most obituaries are brief, usually ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Long-form obituaries can also be written for more detailed life stories.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include spelling errors, omitting important family members, inaccuracies in personal details, and not respecting the deceased's privacy or wishes.

Should an obituary include cause of death?

Including the cause of death is at the discretion of the family. While some families choose to include it, others prefer to keep this information private.

Are obituaries verified for accuracy?

Newspapers and funeral homes usually verify death through a death certificate or confirmation by a family member, but they may not check every detail in the obituary for accuracy.

Can an obituary be published internationally?

Yes, families can publish obituaries in international newspapers or online if they wish to share the news with a wider audience, especially if the deceased had ties to multiple countries. Additional fees may apply.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

It's not necessary, but some families choose to hire professionals to ensure the obituary is well-crafted and free of errors.

How can I make an obituary personal and unique?

Incorporate personal anecdotes, quotes, or expressions of what the deceased meant to others, and highlight their passions, hobbies, or unique traits that made them special.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length, and region. Prices can range from being free of charge for a short notice to several hundred dollars for a detailed obituary with a photograph.

Can obituaries be updated or corrected after publication?

Corrections can usually be made in online obituaries, but printed newspaper obituaries cannot be altered once published. Always check with the publication on their correction policy.

Will newspapers write the obituary for me?

Many newspapers offer assistance in writing obituaries, but they may also allow families to submit fully written pieces. Services and policies vary by publication.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary published?

If the deceased expressed a wish not to have an obituary published, it's customary to respect this request. Families might consider alternative ways to notify friends and relatives, such as private correspondence or through the funeral home.

How can family members be listed in an obituary?

Family members are typically listed in order of closeness to the deceased, such as spouse, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and then extended family.

Is it appropriate to mention charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it's common to suggest a charity for memorial donations in lieu of flowers. This should be a charity that was important to the deceased or reflects a cause they cared about.

Can I include a photo with the obituary?

Many publications and online services allow the inclusion of a photograph with the obituary. There may be guidelines on size and quality, and possibly additional fees.

How can friends and acquaintances add their condolences or memories?

Many online obituary platforms and funeral homes provide a space for comments, memories, and condolences. Printed obituaries often direct readers to these online spaces or to send cards directly to the family.
