Bruce Joseph Winnie - October 11, 1947 - October 01, 2021

Departed: 10/01/2021 (Ogden)
Obituary Preview: After suffering through kidney failure, Bruce Joseph returned to his heavenly home in the early hours of October 1st, 2021, leaving behind his wife of 51 Years, Patricia Winnie.
Bruce Joseph was born to Anna Pestriakoff Williams on October 11, 1947, in Kodiak, Alaska.  He was adopted by Bernard F. Winnie and Betty Lou Knight.  He lived in Alaska long enough to remember getting in trouble for playing baseball at midnight. After a small stint in Seattle, Washington, it was the San Francisco Bay Area Bruce thought of as home.  He lived in the Bay until high school.
Bruce was an avid fan of sports, and when he transferred to Redondo Union High School, he found success wrestling and playing football.  He was an integral part of the well-known Hay's Destruction Team and earned All-League Honors as a linebacker.  During his first game he recorded 10 tackles and quickly befriended Jimmie Smith, who introduced Bruce to his sister, Patricia Ann Taylor. Bruce yearning for family and a sense of belonging, found these in the Smith/Taylor home. He became an instant part of the family.
Bruce followed Patricia to El Camino College where he became defensive captain as well as linebacker on the football team, later transfering to Long Beach State.  By then Uncle Sam demanded his participation in the Vietnam War; but for good or bad his life didn’t include the military.  Having sacrificed his knees to football, Bruce never saw Vietnam and eventually settled in as the Number 1 Chemical Supervisor for a green oil company.
Bruce and Pat were married on September 12th, 1970, and a short time later they made their home in the Bay.  A few years later, Bruce and Pat were sealed in the Oakland Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  They began their eternal companionship on May 29, 1976.  Beginning in 1973 the Winnies raised 6 children: Sean (Emily), Wyatt (Holly), Cori, Megan (Scott Austin), Boyd, and Taylor.  Additionally, they are thrilled with each of their wonderful grandchildren: Lauren, Samantha, Tara, and Leah Winnie; Dakota, Scotty (Jr.), June, and Bradley Austin; and Morgan and Daphne Winnie.
Bruce spent his years loving and serving old friends while making new friends through service.  He developed his God given talents of mechanics and electronics by listening to the inspiration which came to him through quiet reflection.  He was successful in the administration of his gift of healing by listening to that same voice.

Departed: 09/12/2021 (Ogden)
Obituary Preview: Lois Price May 14, 1932 – Sept. 12, 2021
Layton, UT - Lois Marion Price returned to her Heavenly Father on September 12th 2021, surrounded by her dear loving and caring husband, Ronald M. Price and family members at their lovely home.   The world will miss this shining and wonderful soul, who was unceasingly happy, cheerful, positive and upbeat.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, James Cecil and Lula Walker, her brother, Ronald, and granddaughter, Rebecca.  She was survived by her husband Ronald, two children, Regina and Gregory, her siblings, James, Clark, and Marlene. She had 10 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter, as well as many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
One of her precious talents was her lovely and glorious voice of which she shared in many church choirs.  She is fondly remembered for singing precious lullabies to her children and grandchildren.  Even though she suffered from dementia for many years, she and her beloved husband sang beautiful songs to each other each passing day.
When Lois entered a room, she would instinctively search for the person in need of comfort, then extend to them loving kindness and care.  She was known for her uplifting spirit and always had humorous stories and fun quips she related to family and friends.  Grandchildren would often say after a phone call or visit, “I always feel better after talking with Grandma.” They loved to sleep over and Lois would make them French toast in the middle of the night and warmed their blankets in the dryer before bed.  She was also remembered by her Grandchildren for her back tickles.
Her family and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were always central to her.  Throughout her life she held many callings including Relief Society President (3 times) Young Women’s President and was a faithful servant.  She was committed to living a Christ-like life and truly loved everyone she met.  The light of her life was her faithful husband, Ronald, and as her spirit faded into her twilight years, she would often thank him for his loving care that he gave to her daily.
Lois, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, words cannot express how we will miss you.  We find comfort in knowing you are only a prayer away.  Thank you for choosing to be in our family during our earthly sojourn.
We would like to express special thanks to the Nurses, especially Morgan Walker, Caregivers and “Angels” who cared for Lois this past year.

Karen Ann Roberts - January 19, 1938 - August 29, 2021

Departed: 08/29/2021 (Ogden)
Obituary Preview: Karen Ann Olsen Roberts, age 83, left this mortal coil at 10:21 a.m., on August 29, 2021. She was born in Logan, Utah on January 19, 1938, the fifth of six children, to Joseph Olsen and Eulalia Yeates.  She grew up in nearby Hyrum, Utah, graduating from South Cache High School, class of 1956.
Karen Ann met her husband, SSgt. Robert Roberts, Jr., on a bus where she was traveling for a position with Frontier Airlines and he was traveling to a new military duty station with the United States Air Force.  The Elohim (Gods) put these two souls on the same bus and it was truly love at first sight.  Some story tellers claim that they got engaged on that long bus ride, where Bob found himself a beautiful Mormon girl from Cache Valley Utah and Karen Ann found herself a handsome Texan from East Texas.
They were married on November 7, 1957 and later sealed for time and all eternity in the Dallas, Texas LDS Temple.  Her first of 7 children, Robert Lindsey, was born on August 5, 1958 then followed by Dale, Valerie, Jeannie, Tracy, Eric, and Joseph. They were stationed with the Air Force at Tucson, Arizona (Davis-Monthan, AFB), Spokane, Washington (Fairchild, AFB), and Abilene, Texas (Dyess, AFB).  As a couple they gained many lifelong friends from his (their) service for our country.  After Bob’s retirement from the Air Force in 1967 they moved to the Houston area and settled in the city of Deer Park, Texas. In 1976 they moved to an inherited family property near Corrigan, Texas. After Bob‘s passing she later moved to Ogden, Utah to be close to her sisters and other family members. Karen Ann was an active member of the community theater, she also wrote/directed many Road Shows and plays performed at her church over the years. She was a teacher at church, teaching primary children, Sunday School/Gospel Doctrine classes, and women’s Relief Society.  Holding many Teaching and Leadership positions in these organizations.  Her Relief Society Presidency in the Pasadena Texas 1st Ward were instrumental in getting the church to adopt “Cultural Refinment” classes as part of the worldwide women’s curriculum.  She made sure we went to the Symphony, the Threatre, many long Music Recitals, and lots of Choir performances as part of our cultural education.  In her words “just because you live in the woods doesn’t mean you have to act like heathens.” She made sure that country boys and girls had an opportunity to be cultured and somewhat refined.  She tried!!
Karen Ann drove the U.S. Mail truck in the mornings and evenings getting mail to the different Post Offices in the area as a means of making a little extra money. She also employed us to help her clean the church as a paid custodian.  She loved cooking big meals and making her famous Parker House Rolls from her mother’s recipe.  Her chili and Sunday dinner roast with a large pan of cornbread were always well received and devoured in short order.  Her house was always filled with books, as books and learning were just as important as the nourishment received from mama's cooking.
Karen Ann was the church chorister everywhere she lived and a lifelong choir member at church. In the 70’s she was a member of a touring choir called the “Singing Mothers.”  Her last public appearance, where she picked up the chorister’s baton was in January 2021 leading the music for her son's memorial service.
Karen Ann was from pioneer stock, a daughter of the Utah Pioneers and was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  It should be noted that she loved Temple Service and was indeed a True Believing Mormon (TBM).  She loved her family history and the studying of church history.  A love that she instilled into those around her.
Karen Ann was a Den Mother and Webelos leader in Cub Scouts for many church and community Cub Scout Packs, as her boys were growing up. She earned 3 Eagle Scout Mother pins as she helped her boys earn the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
Karen Ann loved reading, painting, quilting, sewing, listening to music both live and recorded, acting in and directing plays, and watching movies, plays, and TV shows. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and took great pleasure in hanging up pictures of them for her guests to see. She loved making quilts, she made many quilts for her grandkids and also made special towels with embroidery for grandchildren’s baptisms.
Karen Ann was an avid student and lifelong learner studying many subjects. She enjoyed her time studying at Angelina College, Lufkin, Texas where she worked on Music Theory, Theatre, Art, Painting, English, Poetry, and History.
Karen Ann is preceded in death by her parents; three older sisters and brother; two of her sons, Robert Lindsey and Dale Bruce; two daughters, Valerie Kay and Jeannie; and two granddaughters, Vanessa Clair and Grace Ann.  She is survived by her younger sister, Sue Jensen(Gary) of Logan, Utah; 3 sons: Tracy Joseph Roberts(LaVieve) of Santaquin, Utah; Eric Kelly Roberts(Trichelle) of West Jordan, Utah; and Joseph Randolph Roberts III(Kayla) of Dayton, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; plus several nieces and nephews.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of someone's death, typically published in a newspaper or online. It serves as a public announcement and often includes a brief summary of the deceased's life story, significant contributions, and information about the funeral or memorial services.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. Sometimes, newspaper staff writers or professional obituary writers are also enlisted to craft a more formal or polished piece.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a historical record of an individual's passing, informing the community and allowing friends, family, and acquaintances to pay their respects. They help to honor the deceased's life and can aid in the grieving process.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely, from a few lines to a lengthy paragraph. It depends on the wishes of the family, the life story of the deceased, and the space available in the publication.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age, place of residence, date of death, and cause of death if the family wishes to include it. It may also provide a summary of their life, achievements, family members, and details about the service arrangements.

Can obituaries include photographs?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. The photo can be a recent one or a picture from a significant time in their life, reflecting how the family wishes to remember them.

What tone is appropriate for an obituary?

An obituary should strive for a tone of respect and honor, with a mix of reverence and celebration of life. The aim is to capture the essence of the person's life and the impact they had on those around them.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication's pricing structure - typically charging by length, word count, or column inch - and whether a photograph is included. Online obituaries may have different pricing schemes or may even be free.

Are obituaries verified for accuracy?

Most newspapers and online platforms have internal procedures to verify the basic facts of an obituary, such as the death itself, through a death certificate or funeral home confirmation, to prevent fraudulent submissions.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more formal statement that announces someone's passing without the detailed life story that an obituary offers. Death notices are often paid for by the family and are strictly to the point.

Can anyone submit an obituary?

While generally a family member or the executor of the estate submits an obituary, technically anyone close to the deceased who has pertinent information and consent can submit one.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published as soon as practical after death, often within a few days. This timing allows informing the community and giving enough notice for individuals to attend services.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary?

No, there is no legal requirement to publish an obituary. However, many choose to do so to inform the community and honor the memory of the deceased.

What if there are errors in an obituary?

If there are errors in an obituary, the family should contact the publication as soon as possible to correct the information. Most publications are willing to correct genuine mistakes.

Can obituaries be posted online?

Yes, many obituaries are now published online on newspaper websites, memorial sites, and social media platforms, offering wider and more enduring reach than print-only obituaries.

How can one personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, the deceased's personal quotes, details about their personality and passions, and insights into their relationships with loved ones. Highlighting their unique attributes makes the obituary more heartfelt.

Are there different styles or formats for obituaries?

Yes, obituaries can follow traditional formats that stick to biographical and service information, or they can be more modern and narrative, telling a story about the deceased's life and character. The style can be selected to best reflect the individual.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donation information in an obituary?

It is quite common to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers. The family can suggest donations to a charity significant to the deceased or one related to the cause of death.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

It is advisable to avoid including very personal details that could be misused, such as the deceased's home address, birth date, and mother's maiden name, to prevent identity theft or other security issues.

Can a family choose not to have an obituary?

Absolutely, it is a personal choice. If privacy is a concern or if the deceased had expressed a wish not to have one, the family can decide against publishing an obituary.

Who should be listed in the surviving family section?

Typically, immediate family members such as spouses, children, parents, and siblings are listed in the obituary. It may also include close extended family like grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and sometimes close friends if the family deems it appropriate.

How can the community contribute to an obituary?

Members of the community can contribute to an obituary by providing memories, photographs, and stories to the family to be included. They can also share the obituary to honor the deceased and write their own tributes in the comments section if the obituary is published online.
