It may also include a list of surviving and predeceased family members.

How can I submit an obituary to a local newspaper?

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, ranging from a few sentences for a death notice to several hundred words for a full obituary. It often depends on the preferences of the family, the life story of the deceased, and the cost implications for newspaper space.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death?

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that the information included is accurate and that the individual's wishes are respected. It can also relieve some of the stress on family members during a difficult time.

How do I decide what personal details to include?

Deciding what personal details to include in an obituary is a personal choice that should be guided by what the deceased might have wanted, the interests of the family, and the aspects of the person’s life that they and their loved ones cherish most.

Should an obituary include charitable donation information?

Can friends contribute to writing an obituary?

Yes, friends can contribute stories, memories, or other significant contributions to an obituary. In fact, involving friends can provide a more well-rounded depiction of the deceased's life and impact on their community.

What cultural considerations should I keep in mind?

Cultural considerations, such as religious or ethnic traditions, might influence the content and structure of an obituary. It is important to be sensitive to these factors and include or omit details according to the wishes of the family and the customs of the deceased’s culture.

Is there any information that should not be included in an obituary?

To protect the family's privacy and safety, certain personal information, such as exact addresses, financial information, or any details that might make them susceptible to fraud or other harms, should be avoided.
