Doug and I shared a bond that began on the baseball field. Playing together as teammates on an outstanding high school baseball team, we quickly learned that we had much in common. Baseball was not simply a sport for us; it was a passion, a way of life. However, our connection soon extended far beyond the baseball field.
Our families did much together, sharing the joys and sorrows of life, celebrating milestones, and forging an unbreakable bond that transcended the years. It was a rare and precious gift— to find a lifelong friend like Doug.
As the years passed, baseball continued to be a cornerstone of our friendship, but in a different capacity. We coached against each other, reveling in the friendly competition, fueled by our mutual love for the game. Doug's dedication to his team was evident in his unwavering support and encouragement of each player. He had a unique ability to inspire young athletes to reach, and often exceed, their potential.
Though our coaching rivalry never waned, we shared countless rounds of golf together. I still remember the laughter and camaraderie of those days, despite Doug often besting me on the golf course. His generosity and humility remained present, even in victory; a true testament to his character.
Together, Doug and I were inducted into two halls of fame, and while we reveled in the honor, our friendship and the memories we cherished together far outweighed any accolades.
The love Doug had for his family, friends, and community was evident throughout his lifetime. It was as if in every action he took, every word he spoke, the undercurrent of love and faith resonated, touching and inspiring everyone around him. As I searched for the perfect way to express this sentiment, I was reminded of the beloved hymn "Amazing Grace," which encapsulates Doug's spirit so accurately.
"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see."
Doug VanderWall's life was truly an embodiment of this amazing grace. His love, friendship, and humility have guided and shaped each of us in some form or another, and his legacy will continue to live on through our actions and memories.
So today, as we say our final goodbyes to Doug, I ask each of you to remember and celebrate the tremendous impact Doug had on the world around him. Keep his memory alive, by emulating those qualities in our own lives that made him exceptional: humility, dedication, love, and by extending a hand to help others whenever able.
May we all strive to live by his example; and in doing so, keep Doug's spirit alive in our hearts and minds forever.
Thank you, Doug VanderWall, for your unwavering friendship, your joyful laughter, the love we shared, and the extraordinary example you set for us all. You will be missed dearly, but never forgotten. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
