Betty made quite the name for herself in Education which she never boasted about. She was a very private person but Keith never let a major accomplishment pass by without a recognition celebration! Some of these accomplishments are as follows: the establishment of the Elizabeth B. And the Elizabeth B. Rawlins '67GS Endowed Scholarship
After her retirement in 1992, Betty and Keith retired full time to their special place, Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard where they had summered since 1965. Betty wasn’t finished serving though ! She served on a few boards on the Vineyard and was the advisory council to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and as the vice president of the Martha’s Vineyard branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
As well as many years on the board for Havenside Housing Corporation in Vineyard Haven. Betty was elated to be part of the Cambridge Black Trailblazers, the history makers and she can be seen on video in Washington DC at the African American museum.

Shirley Gwenesda Kinch, a radiant soul, who graced this world for 81 years, peacefully entered into the Lord’s arms on Monday, January 15, 2024.
Born on October 27, 1942 to the late Rudolph and Cledlene Mottley (Belle), Shirley was born in Salters, St. George, Barbados.  She completed her formal schooling at St. George Girls Primary and Louis (Green) Lynch Secondary schools.  Shirley left Barbados in 1964, to join her Aunt Agnes Darlington and family in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  She lived with the Darlington family on Washington Street, where Aunt Agnes was a positive, loving, yet an encouraging and driving force in having her get established with life and her education.
At the age of 23 years old, on December 11, 1965, Shirley entered into holy matrimony with, Stanley Kinch at St. Augustine African Orthodox Christian Church in Cambridge.
Shirley enrolled and completed cosmetology school at La Newton Beauty School in Boston, but it was not her passion.
Shirley dedicated her life to being a wife and mother and found her true passion as an in-home childcare provider with Catholic Charities. She would later go out into the workforce and simultaneously obtain a degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Massachusetts.  She was later employed with Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) as a head start teacher, Melena Cass Daycare, and the Hattie B.  Cooper Center in Roxbury as Director of infants and toddlers. Upon retirement, she volunteered her time at the Cambridge Public schools and would go into the classroom and read to the children.
Shirley loved the lord and was a member of St. Paul’s AME church in Cambridge for several years before becoming one of the founding members of Church of Christ of Prophesy now known as Cambridge Community Outreach Tabernacle. She was an active member and taught Sunday school to the youth for many years before her illness.
She loved the music of the great gospel songstress Mahalia Jackson and had her favorite hymns and scriptures recited to memory.  She enjoyed cooking for her family and was known passionately as “The Fishcake Queen”. She also loved some of the simple pleasures in life such as, chatting on the phone, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with family.  She had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep way, just by being herself.  She definitely could be blunt at times, but always gave her honest opinion.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Stanley of over 50 years, sisters, Angela Mottley, and Doriel Brathwaite.
She leaves to cherish her memories, devoted son Robert Kinch, daughters Stephanie Kinch-Aguy and Maureen Heywood. Sister, Dr. Marion Williams (Clyde), brother Winston Mottley (Beverly) brother Peter Mottley (Grace), and brother David Mottley.
Additionally she will be remembered by her grandchildren: Rachel King, Yohan Kinch, Avery McLean and Velina Aguy and two great-grandchildren Tommy (JJ) and Jonah King as well as a host of loving and dear nieces, nephews, relatives and lifelong friends.
Shirley’s absence will be felt by all, but her spirit will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.  May her memory continue to bloom in our hearts and remind us that love, in its purest form, is eternal.

John Chisolm - Unknown - January 04, 2024

Departed: 01/04/2024 (Cambridge)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved, John J. Chisolm, the son of the late Lena Virginia Chisolm was born on June 9, 1950, in Ridgeland, South Carolina. He was the second eldest son of eight siblings: Marion (deceased), Noree (deceased), Lorraine, Ezekiel, Mary Ann, Erie Tyrone and James.
As a child, John was raised by his beloved grandparents, Deborah Terry Chisolm Smith and Jim Smith. He worked as a farmhand for the Thomas Family Farm while receiving his elementary schooling. After the passing of his grandmother, John was reunited with his mother and younger siblings before moving to Boston, MA with his brother Marion at the age of twenty. Within a few years their brother, Ezekiel, joined them in Boston. Among his brothers and friends, John was known for working hard and playing hard. He secured day jobs at various construction sites, moonlighted as a school bus driver while working alongside Marion and his cousin, James Greene, Jr. at Wentworth Institute in the evenings. In his down time, you could catch him flashing his dimples at the ladies while playing pool with his buddies.
Since childhood, John’s talent for using his hands to build never failed him. For over 30 years, he was a Laborer with the Laborers’ Union Local 151. John’s talent is imprinted all throughout Boston from the subway tiles at Porter Square train station, the deepest underground station in the Greater Boston MBTA system, to the brick walls at Harvard Law School, the stone wall on Cedar St in Roxbury and the prominent buildings that adorn our Downtown Boston City skyline. Boston will forever be surrounded by John J. Chisolm’s talent.
John was blessed to have two great loves throughout his lifetime, his wife, Dana Angela Howell-Chisolm (deceased) and second wife, Davina Hamlin-Chisolm. John loved his family deeply and never failed to provide. Through his actions, John taught his children and those that loved him the rewards of working hard and loving hard as well as the joy of fishing, cooking, and how to smile through adversity and remain faithful in God’s promises.
He is leaving behind, his wife: Davina; seven children: Charleah, Jai, Dana, Jonathan, Jasmine, Shyanne and Sydea and ten grandchildren: Mykhal, Jálah, Aidan, Destiny, Camille, Melanie, Leila, Devin, Josiah and Jai Jr. and a host in-laws, nieces, nephews who love him dearly.
John, who was lovingly nicknamed “Chisolm” or “Chizz” is forever in our hearts. His laughter, dimpled smile, genuine energy of warmth, and love for life will forever be missed.  He will be remembered for his weekly visits and calls just to say hi or I love you, the witty nicknames he gave to everyone, his comedy, being an ultimate wrestling fanatic, and the man who could fix anything, on a car or building walls and everything in between. John was the man we all called on. How blessed are we to have known and loved such an incredibly giving, talented and kind man of God.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a published notice of a person's death, usually accompanied by a brief summary of their life story, surviving family members, and details of any funeral services or memorial arrangements. Obituaries serve not only as a way to inform others of someone's passing but also as a means to honor and commemorate the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are typically written by a close family member, friend, or, in some cases, a funeral director. Occasionally, individuals may pre-write their own obituaries to reflect their wishes, accomplishments, and to ease the burden on loved ones.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in newspapers, both in print and online, as well as on funeral home websites, memorial websites, and social media platforms.

Is there a standard format or content for an obituary?

While there is no strict format, most obituaries include the deceased's full name, dates of birth and death, a brief account of their personal and professional lives, a list of surviving family members, and details of the funeral or memorial services. Many also include a photograph of the deceased.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral service?

Obituaries are typically published as soon as possible after death and usually before the funeral service to inform friends and acquaintances of the passing and give details about the funeral arrangements.

How long do obituaries typically stay published in newspapers?

In print newspapers, obituaries usually stay published for one to several days depending on the publication schedule and agreement with the family. Online obituaries may remain indefinitely on the newspaper's website or until removed by request.

Should an obituary include cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to include this information, while others may choose to keep it private. It is ultimately up to the family or the deceased's wishes.

What is the average cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost can vary significantly depending on the newspaper's location, the length of the obituary, and any added features such as photographs. It can range from a small fee to several hundred dollars.

Can an obituary be published for free?

While most newspapers charge a fee for publishing obituaries, some local, community, and online newspapers may offer free or reduced-cost options. Additionally, some funeral homes include obituary publishing as part of their service packages.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more factual statement about a person's death, often without the biographical details and tributes commonly found in an obituary. Death notices are typically paid for by the family and are sometimes required for legal purposes.

Can obituaries be contested or changed by someone other than the author?

Generally, the content of an obituary is at the discretion of the family or person who submitted it. However, if someone believes an obituary contains errors or inappropriate content, they may contact the publication or funeral home to request a correction or change, although the decision to amend it will depend on the policies of the entity in control of the publication.

Is it necessary to include a picture with the obituary?

It is not necessary, but including a picture can make the obituary more personal and recognizable to readers. It often serves as a visual representation of the deceased for those who may have known them.

Can anyone submit an obituary to a newspaper, or does it have to go through a funeral home?

Anyone can submit an obituary directly to a newspaper, but some newspapers have specific requirements and may prefer working with funeral homes to ensure the information is accurate and to handle billing and verification processes.

How can an obituary be personalized to reflect the unique life of the deceased?

An obituary can be personalized by including anecdotes, personal stories, hobbies, passions, or significant achievements of the deceased. Quotes from the deceased or family members, as well as mentioning cherished causes, can all contribute to reflecting a unique life.

What should be done if a deceased person has no relatives or friends to write an obituary?

In cases where a person has no close associates, a social worker, the executor of the estate, or the funeral director may write the obituary. Sometimes local community groups, churches, or neighbors step in to assist with this task.

There are no formal legal requirements for publishing an obituary, but it is important to be truthful and considerate, as publishing false information or defamatory content could result in legal consequences.

How can I find an old obituary?

Old obituaries can be found through online databases, archives of local newspapers, library microfilm collections, or by contacting the funeral home that handled the services. Genealogy websites often have extensive collections of historical obituaries as well.

Do you have to pay to access old obituaries?

Access to old obituaries may be free or may require a fee depending on the source. For instance, library archives are typically free, while some online databases may charge for detailed information.

What details are considered respectful to include about the deceased?

It is respectful to include details such as the person’s character, their impact on the community, their professional and personal achievements, and the love and fondness held by their family and friends. Respecting the deceased's privacy and legacy is a guiding principle.

Is it customary to mention predeceased family members?

Yes, it is quite common to include predeceased family members, particularly spouses, children, parents, and siblings. This acknowledges important relationships and can provide a fuller picture of the deceased person’s life.

What if family members disagree on the content of an obituary?

If family members disagree on the obituary's content, it is best to try to reach a compromise that respects everyone's wishes and, most importantly, honors the memory of the deceased. Mediation by a neutral party like a funeral director may be helpful.

Can obituaries be updated after they have been published?

Obituaries can often be updated or corrected after initial publication, though the process and potential cost will depend on the practices of the publication or website hosting the obituary.
