Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically provides a brief history of the deceased's life, lists surviving family members, and includes information about the funeral service or memorial. It serves as a formal notice to the community and also as a way to remember and honor the individual.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

While an obituary is a more detailed write-up celebrating the life of the deceased, a death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement that merely states the fact of the death, often with information about the funeral or memorial service. Death notices are sometimes paid for by the family and tend to be less personal than obituaries.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the staff of a newspaper. Some people even choose to write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Depending on the publication, an obituary can be published within a day to a week after a person’s passing. Timelines can vary based on the newspaper's schedule, the readiness of the family to provide information, and the need to verify details.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, their dates of birth and death, a brief recount of their life, career, and interests, the names of surviving family members, and details about the funeral or memorial service. Some also include causes of death and requests for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length, although newspapers may have word count limits or pricing structures based on length. An obituary should ideally be long enough to convey the deceased's life story succinctly, but short enough to maintain the reader's interest.

Are obituaries published online as well?

Yes, many newspapers now publish obituaries both in their print editions and online. Additionally, there are websites and online platforms dedicated solely to publishing obituaries and providing spaces for condolences and tributes.

Can anyone submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Most newspapers have submission policies and typically require a funeral home or cremation service to submit the obituary, although some may allow direct submissions from family members with proper verification.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies widely depending on the publication and length of the obituary. Some newspapers charge per word or per line, while others have a flat fee. It's best to check with the specific publication for their rates.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

To protect the privacy of the deceased and their family, it's advised to avoid including sensitive information like the deceased's home address, birth date, or mother's maiden name to prevent identity theft. Also, overemphasizing negative aspects of a person's life or airing grievances is considered in poor taste.

Are photographs included in obituaries?

Many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. The specific requirements and costs associated with adding a photo vary by publication.

How are obituaries fact-checked?

Newspapers generally require confirmation of death from a credible source, such as a death certificate or verification by a funeral home. Other details are often taken at the word of the family or the person submitting the obituary unless something raises a red flag.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, writing your own obituary is becoming increasingly common. It allows you to have control over how you are remembered and to share the messages or memories you find most important.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely up to the discretion of the family. Some families choose to include it, especially if the deceased was involved in raising awareness for a particular health condition, while others prefer to keep it private.

How can I ensure the accuracy of an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, double-check all facts, dates, and names before submission. It's also a good practice to have another family member or friend review the obituary. Providing sources for verification to the publication can also help ensure factual correctness.

What makes a good obituary?

A good obituary not only provides the necessary factual information about the person's death and funeral arrangements but also captures the essence of their life with anecdotes, achievements, and personal touches that resonate with those who knew the deceased.

Can obituaries be personalized?

Yes, personalization is encouraged to reflect the unique life of the deceased. This can be achieved through sharing stories, mentioning significant life events, hobbies, passions, or including quotes or poems that were meaningful to the individual.

What cultural considerations should be taken into account when writing an obituary?

Different cultures may have specific traditions or expectations regarding obituaries. It’s important to be aware of and respectful towards such customs. Consulting with family members and community leaders can provide guidance in these matters.

What should I do if I find a factual error in an obituary?

If you discover a factual error in an obituary after publication, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to request a correction. It’s important to provide them with the correct information and any necessary evidence.

Can friends and extended relatives be mentioned in an obituary?

Absolutely. Mentioning close friends, mentors, caretakers, or extended relatives can be a touching tribute and acknowledge those who had a significant impact on the deceased's life.

What happens to online obituaries over time?

Online obituaries may remain accessible indefinitely, depending on the policies of the hosting website. Some online memorials are designed to serve as permanent tributes, whereas others might only be available for a certain period unless extended for a fee.

Is there a protocol for sharing obituaries on social media?

While there is no formal protocol, it’s respectful to consider the family's wishes before sharing an obituary on social media. Once the obituary is public, it's generally acceptable to share or link to it, often accompanied by a personal message or tribute.
