Alvin Richardson - July 24, 1954 - February 06, 2022

Departed: 02/06/2022 (Madison)
Obituary Preview: Dewey Alvin Richardson went to his heavenly home on February 6, 2022. He was born on July 24, 1954 to Dewey and Ila Richardson. The eldest of three boys, most of his growing up years were spent in Rutledge, Georgia. As a kid, Alvin had no lack of adventures. Though sometimes embellished in his articles for the local newspaper, each one contained a truth that was relatable and often humorous to those who read his work regularly.
Alvin was a proud graduate of Morgan County High School’s Class of 1972. He attended Georgia College where he excelled in both basketball and baseball. Alvin completed his undergraduate work in 1977 receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science/Education. His lifelong dream was to be an educator and coach. He later returned to Georgia College to complete an Education Specialist degree.
After undergrad, he was offered a job at Cook High School in Adel, Georgia where he taught Social Studies, was an assistant coach for the football and boys basketball teams, later becoming the head coach of the boys basketball and golf teams.
While living in Adel, he met his future wife, Laura Whidby and they were married in 1981.
Alvin accepted a teaching position in 1979 at Lincoln County High School and became the head boys basketball coach and assistant football coach. While there, he also coached golf and baseball. After eight years in Lincolnton, Georgia, Alvin returned to his high school alma mater serving as an educator, athletic director, head football coach, Assistant Principal, and Principal of the Crossroads School throughout his decades-long career for his beloved Morgan County Bulldogs.
Alvin was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure and was blessed to be the recipient of his mother’s kidney in 1992 that saw him through the next five years. In 1997, he received another successful transplant from dear friend, Ann Ross, whose kidney was life giving for more than 25 years.
After retiring in 2013, Alvin stayed busy with a myriad of activities that he enjoyed, including golfing, fishing, writing, and traveling. Through the years, he was an avid fan of all sports and particularly loved high school athletics, the University of Georgia, and the Atlanta Braves. In addition to being a long-time contributor of sports reporting and humor columns to many state and local publications, he authored seven books of non-fiction highlighting the history of Georgia high school football programs, five of which are published, including Morgan County’s titled, It’s a Dawgs Life.
A pillar of the community, his life’s work was investing in people. Alvin was the most special husband, father, and grandfather – putting his family above all else and enjoyed every moment spent with them. A friend to all, he never met a stranger. He will be loved, remembered, and missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Ila Richardson and brother, Robert Alan Richardson. He is survived by his wife, Laura Richardson, daughters, Lindsey Richardson and Lucy Brown, son-in-law, Thomas Brown, grandchildren, Hazel Brown and Walter Brown, his youngest brother, Terry Richardson, and by anyone who ever had the opportunity to call him “Coach.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice, often found in newspapers or online platforms, that announces someone's death and provides a brief account of their life, including information about any funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to inform the community of the loss and to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Why is an obituary important?

Obituaries serve several purposes: they inform the community about a death, honor the deceased, provide a record of the person's life, and notify readers of any service times. They also help in the grieving process by allowing survivors to reflect on and celebrate the life of their loved one.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by close family members or friends of the deceased. In some cases, individuals may draft their own obituaries in advance. Funeral homes and obituary writers are other sources that can help compose the announcement.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, their age at death, the date and location of death, a brief overview of their life including significant life events, accomplishments, and the names of surviving family members. Additionally, information about the time and location of funeral services, if applicable, is included.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be posted on. Traditional newspaper obituaries are typically brief, often under 200 words due to space restrictions. However, online obituaries tend to allow for longer tributes because space is less constrained.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a simplified announcement of someone's death, which may provide minimal information, such as the name, age, and date of death, along with the funeral service details. An obituary, on the other hand, is more detailed and often includes a biography of the deceased's life and achievements.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

To submit an obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform directly to inquire about their submission guidelines, formats, deadlines, and fees. Many newspapers and websites have specific processes and may offer templates or assistance in writing the obituary.

Why do some obituaries cost money to publish?

Obituaries often incur publication costs because newspapers and some online sites charge for the space due to costs of operation. The fee may vary based on length, the inclusion of a photo, and whether the obituary will run for multiple days.

Can an obituary be published online for free?

Yes, there are websites dedicated to obituaries or memorials that allow you to post obituaries for free. Additionally, some funeral homes may offer this service as part of their packages, hosting the obituary on their website.

Is it necessary to publish the cause of death in an obituary?

No, it is not necessary to publish the cause of death in an obituary. The decision to include that information is a personal one and can depend on the family's comfort level with sharing those details publicly.

What are some common phrases or words used in obituaries?

Common phrases used in obituaries include "passed away," "surrounded by family," "after a long battle with," "preceded in death by," and "survived by." The language in an obituary typically reflects a tone of respect and remembrance.

Can an obituary include a photograph?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. Newspapers and online platforms often have specific guidelines about the type and quality of photo that can be included, such as high-resolution images for proper print quality.

Should an obituary mention charitable donations?

It's common for obituaries to suggest that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charitable organization that was significant to the deceased or related to the cause of death. Including this information can provide a meaningful way for others to honor the person's memory.

How can I ensure that my loved one's obituary is accurate?

To ensure accuracy, it’s important to fact-check all the information such as dates, names, and life accomplishments. Have multiple family members read the obituary before publication to catch any errors or omitted details.

Can an obituary be updated after it has been published?

Printed obituaries in newspapers cannot usually be updated once published. However, online obituaries can often be edited after the fact. It's important to check with the publication or website about their specific policies on updates and corrections.

What can be done if a deceased person's obituary contains errors?

If an error is found in a published obituary, contact the publication to inquire about issuing a correction or an updated version where possible. For online obituaries, you may have the ability to make corrections directly or through the funeral home if they manage the posting.

Is it appropriate to share personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Yes, it is quite common to include personal anecdotes or stories in an obituary to share the unique personality and experiences of the deceased. These personal touches can provide comfort to the bereaved and offer a more intimate view of the individual's life.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published soon after a death, often within a few days. This timing allows the community to be informed in a timely manner and provides information about any upcoming funeral or memorial services.

What is an obituary template and should it be used?

An obituary template is a pre-designed framework that outlines the structure and content for an obituary. It can be helpful in organizing thoughts and ensuring that all pertinent information is included. However, personalization is encouraged to reflect the individuality of the deceased.

How can I write an obituary that truly honors my loved one?

To write an obituary that honors your loved one, focus on their most significant life achievements, relationships, and personality traits. Include specific examples that illustrate their character, share memorable stories, and express the impact they had on those around them.

Are there any privacy concerns with publishing an obituary?

Privacy concerns may arise when publishing details about the deceased or surviving family members. To mitigate issues, limit overly personal information and consider implications such as potential fraud before disclosing details like exact dates of birth or addresses.
