Obituary Preview: Samuel “Slippery Sam” Alonge, 71, of Tamaqua died unexpectedly on Monday, April 15, 2024, in Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Maggie (Demyanovich) Alonge who passed away in 2019. Born September 12, 1952, Sam was the son of the late Samuel and Sultana (Dardas) Alonge. A 1970 graduate of Panther Valley High School, he was a lifelong musician, playing in several local bands since his teenage years. He was best known for The Mudflaps and It Takes Two. Sam was a loving and caring father and grandfather. His life was enriched by music; and in his recent years, he loved to travel. Sam is survived by a daughter, Sally Alonge, her partner Ryan Matalavage of Tamaqua; grandchildren, Thaddeus, Axel, and Charlotte; girlfriend, Jill Hargus of Allentown; a sister, Tony Schucavage of Pottsville; and several nieces and great nephews. He touched the lives of many and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Services will be held at 5 PM on Monday, April 22, in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 101 North Greenwood Street, Tamaqua with Rev. Cindy White officiating. Obituary Preview: Florence (Flossie) Harriet (nee Stride) Fegley, age 98, passed away on February 18, 2024, at St Luke’s Miners Rehab Center in Coaldale, Pennsylvania. Flossie was the daughter of the late Amy and Elmer Stride of Mahanoy City. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, William H Fegley Sr. She is survived by their three children, William Jr. and his wife Jacquelyn of Blue Bell, PA, Mark and his wife Margaret of Naples, Florida, and daughter Lynn Kanahan and her husband John of Ocean View, DE as well as five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother James Stride and her sister, Marion Webb.

Mrs. Fegley was a 1942 graduate of Mahanoy Township High School and was first employed by W. T. Grant selling women’s accessories. Her love of clothes and style began there. She met her husband at the Lakewood Ballroom, just after WWII ended, at a big band concert. She retired to raise their children while her husband eventually joined his brother Edgar with the operation of Fegley Oil Company, the development of Fegley Tire Company, and Fegley Mini Marts. Versions of these businesses are still in operation 60 years later with family members. Flossie ran everything at home. She was active with the Tamaqua Lionettes, Eastern Star, and school related organizations as their children grew. She loved big band and Broadway music, dancing, and crafts. She was a doting Grammy, and attended as many events as she could travel to. Together with her husband Bill, they sponsored an annual college scholarship awarded to a graduating senior at Tamaqua High School for over 40 years which continues today. Even in her twilight years, Flossie remained interested in Tamaqua as a community.

Flossie, like her husband Bill, was always thankful for what life brought her. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St John’s United Church of Christ, 150 Pine Street, Tamaqua, PA 18252 or the charity of your choice. When you think of her, think of something you are grateful for today.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of St Luke’s – Miners Rehabilitation Unit which provided care to Flossie and Bill for many years. They were comfortable and safe in their care and were treated like family members.

Obituary Preview: Michael J. O’Malley III, of Rush Township, Tamaqua, died Friday, January 26, 2024, at Lehigh Valley Health Network, Allentown. He was the proud steward of Kaup Estate, his maternal family’s ancestral home, settled in 1830.

Born October 9, 1953, at the former Coaldale State Hospital, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Jane Kaup O’Malley, descendent of the area’s earliest pioneering families, and Michael J. O’Malley II, a prominent coal operator and contractor in Schuylkill, Carbon and Luzerne counties.

He is survived by his partner John Boyd Henderson, Harrisburg, sisters Marria L. O’Malley Walsh, Pottsville, Lizabeth M. Corinchock, wife of Paul G. Corinchock, Weatherly, Patricia A. Regalis, wife of Joseph J. Regalis, Jr., Tamaqua, and brother James V. O’Malley, Lake Hauto; nieces Nicole C. Lipinsky (Neil) Allentown, Jillian E. Krill (Matthew) Bethlehem, Carly R. O’Malley, Lake Hauto, Cady E. O’Malley, Tamaqua and nephew Joseph M. O’Malley (Ashley), Newport News, Virginia and an aunt, Sandra Kaup MacPherson, Darien, Conn., grandnephews, Theodore, Andrew, Matthew and grandniece Elizabeth.

A 1971 graduate of Marian Catholic High School, Barnesville, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975 from the University of Scranton where he was a member of several honor societies and President of his senior class. His grandfather Moses Witty O’Malley was a member of the University’s first graduating class in 1898, when it was known as St. Thomas College. Mr. O’Malley completed his master’s degree in 1978 at Lehigh University while serving as a graduate assistant in the Office of the Dean.

Mr. O’Malley joined the staff of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), Harrisburg, in 1978. He was appointed the first public information officer exclusively for Pennsylvania’s historic preservation program, served as one of two coordinators for “Pennsylvania’s 300th Birthday: A Celebration of Friends”, and as a special features coordinator for PHMC’s press office. In 1984 he was appointed editor of “Pennsylvania Heritage”, the national award -winning history magazine published by PHMC a position he held until his retirement in 2014. During his tenure as editor, he introduced a series of interviews with famous Pennsylvanians whose roles influenced or interpreted the Commonwealth’s heritage. Later he would initiate a series of articles featuring the memories of everyday individuals, and other innovative features. In retirement he served on the PHMC Historical Marker Review Committee.

He had served on the Boards of the Historical Society of Dauphin County, Doshi Gallery, and Midtown Market District in Harrisburg, and the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, Orwigsburg. He was a member of the Tamaqua Elks Club, Tamaqua Legion and a 32-year member of the former Pottsville Club until it disbanded in 2013. Mr. O’Malley was a founder, charter member and an officer of the former Fort Schuylkill Chapter, Pennsylvania, National Society Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR). Currently he was a member of the Governor Hiestand Chapter, Reading, NSSAR.

Michael O’Malley was a true gentleman in every sense of the word from his signature bowtie to his demeanor. He touched whoever he met, however briefly. A kind and gentle person, he was genuinely interested in knowing who you were, what you thought and what interested you. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and love of arts, culture, antiques and especially history but most importantly when he had a conversation with you, you were the only person that mattered.

Friends may call at the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad Street, Tamaqua, on Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home at 11 a.m., followed by interment at the White Church Cemetery, Barnesville.
