Mark L. Rutkowski - December 30, 1955 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (South Bend)
Obituary Preview: Mark Lewis Rutkowski (COL Ret) DOB 12/30/1955 DOD 5/3/2024
If you are reading this, then I am dead. I did not expect to go out this soon, but as the saying goes “Man proposes, God disposes.” So instead of a nice comfy retirement, I ended up like this, oh well. As the custom, the obit should cover my life, surviving family and the like, so here it goes.
To my parents’ great surprise, I was the last of four children, conceived only 9 months after my sister was born. I can only imagine how that conversation went. To their great “joy” I arrived  9 months later.
I grew up in a comfortable lower middle-class environment in Mishawaka, under the benign neglect of my parents. No criticism is implied, after two brothers and sister, I guess they wanted to finish up as placidly as possible. So as long as the school didn’t call or the police showed up, I was OK. When they did, a price was paid as when they dropped by to talk to my parents about something I supposedly did (but I was innocent, I swear) on the day of my brother Phil’s wedding when all the family was there. That did not go over well.
I attended St Bavo’s grade school for 7 ¾ years before being expelled. Why they had to kick me out after nearly 8 years and only few weeks left is beyond me. Anyway, I had to finish up at Emmons and this C/D student and became an honor student there. Just shows the quality of a good parochial school education.  I went on to Mishawaka High School and through a concentrated lack of effort on my part, I managed to graduate in the “top two-thirds” of my class – as the Army recruiter credited me. Studying was hard in the face of disinterest.
After graduation, I got the talk from my dad (get a job, go to school or join the Army). Since I doubted any college would take me and I did not want a minimum wage job, the Army was my preference. I had in fact already talked with them. So, I went in 2 weeks after graduation and something clicked as I did not leave the Army for 37.5 years, retiring as a full Colonel. I also worked as an Army civilian for 5 more years before retiring.
I graduated with a BA degree from Purdue with the highest honors (paying for your own education focuses the intellect) and later earned a MA degree from Purdue and another from the US Army War College. “Knowledge is good” to quote Emil Faber. The Army provided me an opportunity for FTA -Fun, Travel and Adventure- as the wags used to say.
My parents, Matt and Marjorie “Jean” Clapp preceded me in going to the big poker game in the sky after long and good lives, and I missed them greatly when they passed. I am, however, survived by two gear head brothers, Dave “Once a Marine always a Marine”, and Philip “I am the poor forgotten middle child” Rutkowski. I am also survived by my sister, Lynn Schult, who I have the utmost respect for, who raised two great kids, homeschooling them while working a minimum wage job before becoming a true “woman of steel” (an iron worker). Bob, her husband who has the strangest sense of humor I ever saw, played a large role as well. Hats off to you.
My greatest success and joy was eloping with my wife Pam (Pallatin) in July 1975. It was supposed to be a secret, but I left the marriage license on my dresser at home with I returned to my first duty station, Berlin Germany. So much for OPSEC. She has been with me through good times and bad for 49 years. I owe much of what success I had in life to her. I love her deeply and beyond measure. I also leave a son, Nathan Daniel, so named so he would have ND as his initials. He is studying to be a Marine Biologist. A good son, and a pleasure to be around, unless he was your euchre partner.
As a person who enjoyed a good laugh (why I was known as the smiling colonel) and had a deep interest in travel, military and Roman history and ND football. One of my most enjoyable trips was to Rome to see the sights of antiquity. Unfortunately, a case of Mussolini’s revenge forced me to experience Rome from the inside of the bathroom.
I have many things undone: books unread and places unseen but I am thankful for what I did accomplish. To everyone I would emphasize to not waste time, never put off what you can do today for you don’t know what tomorrow holds.
Special thanks to Cathy, David and Julie who provided wonderful companionship and care, and Southern Care Hospice for their compassionate services.
PS. Mark wrote his own obituary, and if you knew Mark, his sense of humor was one of his biggest assets.
A celebration of life will be held later.

Miki was one of a kind.  Smart, funny, articulate and beautiful were only a few of her best qualities.  She had a deep love for her family, especially her soulmate Keith, and for all the creatures that roam the earth.  In the entirety of her adult life she was never without the companionship of her beloved dogs and cats.  Miki was able to teach you something new in almost every conversation because she had so much knowledge tucked away in that marvelous brain of hers.  She was happy to talk about anything with you, from religion to politics to Harry Potter and Star Trek.
She was always willing to chat on the phone and thoroughly loved hearing about the lives of her friends and family.  It is hard not to recognize the strength and willpower to live that Miki showed.  She was faced with endless health challenges and was determined to fight her way through so many different times.  She was one who taught us to look at the human spirit and see what it is capable of.
We will miss her smile, her laugh, her friendship and the love she shared.
Rest in peace Miki.
We love you. Cremation has taken place.  No services are scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pet Refuge Animal Birth Control Clinic A tribute from Keith-
In my journey of 68 years I have been wrong about so many things. But one thing that I have never been wrong about is how amazing and strong the human spirit is. We all have experienced the wonders of life in one way or another. Many challenges along the way. many when we are young have shaped our views to this day. But death is one of those mysteries that we can't quite understand. As I watch my beautiful wife take the final journey I find my belief of an after life to be reasonable. Not because of any book or anything that I was taught growing up, I find myself wanting to be selfish. I was lucky to find someone who loved me with all my faults and all my screwed up opinions. Miki was my saint, she never gave up on me even when I was ready to give up on myself. I will finish this journey of life without her but I will never forget the love and patience she had for me. She was one of a kind, smart, funny articulate beautiful, and most of all kind to everyone. I will not believe her spirit will just die and fade away. I have faith of an after life because she taught me kindness and love is the most important thing in this world. I believe we will once again be together somehow, some way. I have no proof to give, only her love for me and my love for her which I believe can never die. This is not about religion to me this is about love, a love so strong it will endure all obstacles until we are together again. She was my one in a billion. Life has a way of surprising us. If you have someone in your life then hold on tight live every minute like it's your last, because it just might be true. Love to all who read this, it has been very helpful in my grieving to write down and share my simple thoughts. Be kind to one another, and be kind to animals because we are the stuarts of our planet. Peace and love to all thank you for reading.

Rosa Macri - January 11, 1955 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (South Bend)
Obituary Preview: Rosa Macri, 69, passed away on April 17, 2024 in her home surrounded by family. Rosa was born in Calabria, Italy to Francesco and Maria (Nicoletti) Macri. Rosa was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Eduardo Macri of Australia, Domenic Macri, Cosimo “Pete” Macri, Anthony “Tony” Macri, and Concetta Maugeri of South Bend, Indiana. Rosa was also preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Catherine Macri, Francesca Macri, Sheila Macri, and Immacolata Macri, and her brothers-in-law, Francesco Lizzi and Carmello Maugeri. Rosa is survived by her sister, Maria Lizzi, and her brothers, Nicola Macri and Salvatore “Sam” Macri (Tammy) of South Bend, Indiana, many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Rosa was born with Down Syndrome yet spoke fluent English and Italian. True to her Italian roots, Rosa showed resilience in every challenge she faced.  Rosa spent most of her life helping to care for her parents until 2004, when her father passed. Rosa lived in a group home that she loved until 2020, when she experienced a near-death experience. In true Rosa fashion, she beat the odds and survived the experience – singing, “I’m back!” on the way home from the hospital. During her time at the group home, Rosa made numerous friends. Her best friend, “Corey-Bean” survives. Rosa’s favorite caregiver, Christine Langdon, was a constant presence in Rosa’s life and helped care for Rosa after she left the group home. Rosa was blessed to have Chris at her side when she passed. Rosa worked as an assembler at Marshall-Starke where she also made many friends. Rosa enjoyed spending her summers at Camp Millhouse. From 2020 until she passed, Rosa lived with her sister, Maria, and her niece, Rosemary Lyle, who took the utmost care of her along with her guardian and niece, Marianne Tucker. Rosa loved living with Maria and Rosemary who doted over her daily. Rosa loved shopping, especially with Rosemary, who spoiled her with trinkets, dolls, hats, necklaces, and nail polish. Rosa loved having her nails painted, coloring, writing her name repeatedly, and folding papers and laundry. Rosa loved dancing and going to parties where she always found her way to the center of attention so she could give a speech.  She mastered the Tarantella and would belt out a high-pitched “Happy Birthday” song to anyone who would listen – even when it was no one’s birthday.  Rosa enjoyed challenging and bickering with her nephews, Joe Galea and Michael “Mick” Lizzi – she always found a way to have the last word. She would constantly remind Joe that she used to change his diaper and could silence Mick by just saying, “Michael!” She introduced her niece, Marianne, to everyone as, “This is my niece Marianne who works like a lawyer, beautiful woman all my life, who saved my life” even though they already knew Marianne. While living in the group home, Rosa called Marianne daily to check on her and ask about her sister, Maria. She enjoyed tattling to Marianne about her housemates and telling her about her workday and social activities. Rosa loved spending time and visiting with her great-nieces and nephews (Juliana Lizzi, Jacob Lyle, Lizzie Lyle, Frankie Lizzi, Nico Galea, and Sophia Lizzi) who treated Rosa like gold and always made sure to include her in everything they did. Lizzie would come home from Ball State often to care for Rosa so her caregivers could have a break. Rosa’s favorite holiday was Christmas and she loved Christmas music, often playing it year-round. Her favorite Italian song that she knew verbatim was “Calabrisella Mia.”
Rosa had an infectious giggle and a witty personality. She was an inspiration to everyone. Rosa made friends wherever she went, often stopping to kiss or hug a stranger. Rosa was always a ray of sunshine and the life of any party. She was very close to her brother-in-law, Frank, who treated her like a sister. We are confident they are teasing each other in Heaven.
The family wishes to give a special heartfelt thanks to Rosa’s caregivers, especially Christine Langdon, Alicia Burnham, Leslie Jeffers, Debbie Myer, Amanda Stone, and Christine Ferrara, her social worker, Annie Logan, Heartland Hospice, the staff at IU Methodist Hospital who saved Rosa’s life in 2020, and all of Rosa’s friends and family who took time out of their busy schedules to entertain and care for Rosa these last few years.
Rosa was a breath of fresh air, a light in our lives, and a force to be reckoned with. Rosa taught us to celebrate the little things, enjoy the scenic route, and to slow down and enjoy every moment we have together. Rosa made it easy to love her, and she will be immensely missed by all the lives she touched.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Saturday, April 20, 2024 in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church.  Entombment will follow in Highland Cemetery.  Viewing will take place from 9:00am until services in the church.  Zahoran Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.   To leave an online condolence, visit our website http://www.zahoran.com or our Facebook page Zahoran Funeral Home.  Contributions in Rosa’s honor may be made to Camp Millhouse or Heartland Hospice.
