Frank was born October 22, 1943 to Russel and Elsie (Clapp) Ballard in Wauseon.  He graduated from Napoleon High School and attended Davis Junior College, Toledo.  He enlisted with the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge, he had various employers in the printing business over a 35 year period. He was a member of the MLB Insiders Club and AARP.
He is survived by his children: Kim, Jody, Brenda and Don; and siblings: Sharon Radabaugh, Barbara Ballard, Robert Ballard and Russ Ballard.
Frank’s services will be private and they have been entrusted to the Zachrich Family Funeral Home of Holgate.

Obituary Preview: Mary K. Miley age 77, of Holgate, died Sunday, April 10, 2022 at St. Vincent’s Mercy Medical Center, Toledo surrounded by loved ones.
Her Legacy… Mary was born October 13, 1944 in Napoleon to Charles and Sylvia (Naveau) Knapp.  In 1962, she graduated from Napoleon High School.  On July 11, 1964, she married Thomas Miley.  Mary worked for Napco Plastics, Napoleon for 16 years.  She was a member of the Holgate United Methodist Church where she was once the janitor.  Mary was also a member of the Holgate Lions Club.
Her Family… She is survived by her loving husband Tom; sons: Marc Miley, Napoleon and Curtis Miley, Napoleon; granddaughter Thera (Parker Wittenmyer) Miley, Defiance and many “adopted grandchildren.”  Proceeding Mary in death was  a brother, Myron “Mac” Knapp.
Her Farewell Services… Friends will be received in the Zachrich Family Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 3:00 pm until the celebration of Mary’s life at 4:00 pm.  Burial will follow in Hoy Cemetery, Napoleon.  Contributions can be made to the Holgate United Methodist Church.

Her Legacy… She was born May 4, 1929 to Carl and Golda (Warner) Jones.  In 1947, she graduated from Defiance High School.  On June 9, 1951 she married Robert Gustwiller in St. John’s Catholic Church, Defiance.  For 3 years Marie worked at All-Star Products, Defiance and retired from the Campbell Soup Company after 12 years.  Marie like to crochet, play cards with friends, read, put jig saw puzzles together and attend grandchildren’s events. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria and its Rosary Altar Society.  She was on CLC council 75 and was a Charter-Life time member of the VFW Auxiliary 8847 New Bavaria.
Her Family… She is survived by her loving children: David (Cindy) Gustwiller, Archbold, Karen (Rene) Gill, Holgate and Nancy Gustwiller, Holgate; 5 grandchildren: Chad (Gretchen) Gustwiller, Mark (Zoie) Gustwiller, Tara (Kyle) Hayes, Nicholas (Abi) Gill and Alissa (Terry, Jr.) Knapp; and 12 great-grandchildren.  Marie was preceded in death by her husband Robert on October 12, 2002 and siblings: Gladys Anthony, Kenneth “Cosmo” Jones, Roger Jones and Raymond Jones.
Her Farewell Services… Friends will be received in the Zachrich Family Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Tuesday from 4-8:00 pm.  Everyone will be welcomed into Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria on Wednesday at 9:30 am.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am with Father Nick Cunningham officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Contributions in Marie’s memory can be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Cancer Society.

Obituary Preview: Paul Eric Hilton age 58, died at his New Bavaria home Monday, April 4, 2022.   His Legacy… Paul was born August 17, 1963, to Perry Ellis and Eva Arlene (Kline) Hilton in Michigan City, IN. He graduated from Westville High School, Westville, IN and enlisted with the United States Army in 1981. He served in the Army for 20 years and retired with an honorable discharge in 2001. During his Army career, he was fortunate enough to be able to see many different parts of the world including Hungary, Honduras, and Panama. He also served two tours in Germany, where he enjoyed participating in Volksmarches on the weekends. He met Stacy Boff, and her son Matthew, at his last duty station of Ft. Sill, OK in May of 1998 and they were married on February 18, 2006. Soon after his discharge from the Army, they moved to Ohio, and he went to work for Allied Moulded Products in Bryan and has been with them for the past 20 years. Paul was an avid glass collector (specifically uranium glass) and spent hours on a daily basis researching the origins of the pieces he found on his numerous antique trips and glass shows he attended. He was also a member of several glass collector societies where he enjoyed in-depth discussions with glass experts from all over the country.     His Family… He is survived by his wife Stacy: his beloved boxer, Mike. Children: Susan Ann (James) Stratton, Winter Garden, FL, Matthew Boff, Hamler, OH and Hannah Hilton, New Bavaria, OH. A grandson Eli and sisters: Joyce Brantley, Naples, FL and Lynn Wiltfong, LaPorte, IN; niece Kim and nephews, Mike, Jim and Corey. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Perry, Nick and Gayle.   His Farewell Services…Paul did not want typical services. He will be cremated and there will be a memorial service with glass, at a later date. Her Legacy… She was born August 11, 1925 to William and Sophia (Gobrogge) Fuhrhop in Deshler. Loretta graduated from Hamler High School.  Loretta married Harry John Cramer on November 25, 1945 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hamler.  She was employed by the United States Post Office in both Holgate and Napoleon.  She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Holgate and taught Sunday school and was a Bible school teacher.  Loretta was a member of the Holgate Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the American Legion post 340 Auxiliary.
Her Family… She is survived by her loving family: daughter, Marci Matthews, Holland, OH ; son Mark (Lynda) Cramer, Ridgeville Corners; grandchildren, Cyndi (Brandon) Study, Zac (Desiree Ong) Cramer, Greg Matthews and Brewer (John) Kentzel; and great grandchildren: Jaxson Study, Alexis Kentzel, Roman Kentzel, Holden Kentzel and Harrison Kentzel. She was preceded in death by her husband John on April 29, 2015, siblings: Marvelle Guelde, Robert Fuhrhop, Elmer Fuhrhop, Herbert Fuhrhop and Arlene Garbers and great grandson Braydon Study.
Her Farewell Services… Friends and family will be received in the Zachrich Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Sunday from 4-7:00 pm and one hour before the church service.  The celebration of Loretta’s life will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Holgate on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 11:00 am.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Contributions made in Loretta’s memory are asked to be made to CHP Defiance In-patient Hospice or the Northwest Ohio Alzheimer’s Association.

Her Legacy… She was born September 22, 1933, in Liberty Center to James and Audrey (Hill) Tallman.  In July of 1965, she married Bill Hall.  First and foremost, she was a homemaker.  Over the years, she also worked retail and was an egg inspector for USDA.  Ruth drove school bus for Holgate Local Schools and did home health care in Henry County.  She was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Hamler.
Her Family… Ruth is survived by sons: Jerry (Toby) Richard, Defiance and Billy (Melinda) Hall, Defiance; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and sisters: Sue Fletcher, AZ and Martha (Tony) Baker, Ridgeville Corners.  Ruth was preceded in death by a son James Mark Richard and a brother Jamie Tallman.
Her Farewell Services… Friends will be received in St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Hamler on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, from 10:00 am until the service at 11:00 am with Pastor Richard Sauerlender officiating.  Burial will follow in Morrison Cemetery, Liberty Center.  Contributions in Ruth’s memory can be made to Alzheimer Association or American Cancer Society.

On April 16, 1955, he married Eva Carr.  Elmer drove truck for Miller Brother Trucking.  He also did some construction work with Lathrop in Toledo.  He was a member of the Moose and AMVETS, both in Napoleon.

His Legacy… Lowell was born September 24, 1938 in Holgate. He graduated from Holgate High School in 1956 and enlisted with the United States Navy.   On April 7, 1968, he married Donna Gallagher. Lowell retired on January 1, 2001 from Tenneco Automotive after 35 years of service.  He was a member of the Holgate Volunteer Fire Department.  He was also a member of the New Bavaria AMVETS and a social member of the New Bavaria VFW.  Lowell thoroughly enjoyed his tomato plants year after year.
His Family…  Lowell is survived by his wife, Donna Orthwein of 53 years of marriage, a sister Ruth Ann Welke, Oviedo, FL and a nephew, Kent Welke.  He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janice and a nephew David Welke.

Larry is survived by his wife, Alice (McCotter) Gerken; his children Liza (Steve) Schuller of Holgate, OH, Mike (Angie Fraccica) of Frankfort, OH, and Abby (Brandon) Readshaw of Napoleon, OH; stepchildren Dave Grafitti of Perrysburg, OH, Andy (Kim) Grafitti of Greenville, SC, Ben (Shann) Leatherman of Battle Creek, MI, and Amy (Jayson) Landers of Battle Creek, MI; grandchildren Noah, Rylie, and Lexa Schuller, Peyton and Sammy Gerken, Caden, Cason, Cale, and Calleigh Readshaw, Jake, Isabella, and Sophia Grafitti, Justin (Chrystina) Turner, and Raegan (David) Villanueva, Sydney and Vincent Leatherman, Grace and Hannah Keenan, Zoey Pierce, and Cade Landers; great-grandchildren Alani and Zayne Villanueva, and Hayes Turner; and siblings, Tom Gerken of Vernon Center, NY; Linda (Bernie) Erven of Columbus, OH; Judy Hess of Wooster, OH; and Dan (Nancy) Gerken of Holgate, OH.
Preceding him in death were his parents Lawrence and Alta (Sonnenberg) Gerken, brother-in-law Frank Hess, and sister-in-law Carole (Tom) Gerken.
Larry was born on June 8, 1945, on a farm in McClure, OH, to Lawrence and Alta (Sonnenberg) Gerken. He grew up on the family dairy farm outside of Holgate with his siblings, was active in Henry County 4-H and attended Holgate High School, where he was a member of the graduating class of 1963. He then continued his education at The Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture in 1967 and a Master’s Degree in 1986. He began his career in education at Paulding Schools and Napoleon Schools. Larry left education to work as a farm manager for several large farms out of state before returning to the field of education in 1979 as an agricultural education teacher at Holgate High School for 25 years. While at Holgate High School, he advised 18 FFA members to the State FFA Degree and 5 FFA members to the prestigious American FFA Degree. In 2017, Larry was inducted into the Henry County Agriculture Hall of Fame. Throughout his career in education, he also coached football, basketball, track, and volleyball at the junior high, freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels.
Larry was a member of the Holgate Lion’s Club and the Henry County Retired Teachers’ Association. He served as president of the Horseshoe Cove (Bradenton, FL) Horseshoe Club, was a board member of the Woodshop, and a committee member of various other activities. In Fremont, IN, he and Alice were members of Peace Lutheran Church and he served as president of the homeowner’s association.
Those who knew and loved Larry appreciated his passion for being outdoors, where he enjoyed cutting wood, spending time in the woods and checking on crops. He was a recycling fanatic, working with hundreds of students to create a well-known recycling program benefiting Holgate High School FFA. A lifelong Buckeye fan, Larry never knew a stranger. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and he had a talent for running into people he knew throughout his travels.
Memorials may be made in Larry’s name to the following organizations: Henry County Junior Fair Buyer’s Club, Henry County Retired Teachers, or Holgate Athletic Boosters.
Friends will be received in the Zachrich Family Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Friday, March 18, 2022 from 4-7:00 pm and again one hour before the service at church.  The Celebration of Larry’s life will be Saturday at 11:00 am in St. John Lutheran Church, Holgate with Reverend Jeff Teeple officiating.

Paul Emory - September 24, 1942 - February 20, 2022

Obituary Preview: Paul Emory age 79, of Wauseon, died Sunday evening, February 20, 2022 at the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
Paul Emory was  man worth honoring. He was father of two sons Paul Emory Jr and Timothy Emory. He also had four grandchildren that loved him very much. Though he was not around as much as we wish he was he was always in our thoughts. He was a very hardworking man that overcame many obstacles in his life.  He never gave up on anything he had tanasity and a lot of other good qualities. He lived life to the fullest; always hunting for the next good deal some of my best memories was going to the flea market with him and living with him when I was a small child. We had horses and chickens. He loved riding motorcycles and old cars he always had a project in the garage or something going on. He was a heavy equipment operator but much more he was a father and a grandfather and had many people that loved and cared for him. He was my dad and his life was worth being honored in way that pays tribute to the great man he was.

His Family…  Cory is survived by his wife Amberly Karcher, his children Landyn and Ruby whom he loved unconditionally.  He is also survived by his mother Gina (Rob) Scofield of Napoleon; brother, Christian Karcher, Jacksonville, FL; and his grandmother Mary Karcher.  Cory was preceded in death by his grandfather Norman Karcher, father and an infant daughter.

His Legacy… Cliff was born March 25, 1935 to Alphonsus Liguori “Tootie” and Laura (Maag) Crumrine in Henry County.  He graduated from Hamler High School.  Cliff married Betty Schmitz on May 13, 1961.  She died on December 4, 2005.  On January 28, 2011, he married Shirley Longfellow.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria and was on the church council and an active member in the choir.  He also sang with the Northwesternaires Barbershop Chorus, Defiance.  He was also a member of the Lima Eagles, Knights of Columbus, Ottawa, charter member of the New Bavaria Volunteer Fire Department and the NRA.  He was an avid Cleveland Indians, Buckeyes and Notre Dame fan.  In his spare time he was in his garden, loved fishing, hunting, golfing and dancing with his wife.
His Family… Cliff is survived by his wife, Shirley; children: Donna (Keith) Szenderski, Toledo, Dale (Stephanie) Crumrine, Glandorf and Karen (David) Okuley, Wapakoneta; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and a sister Rita Layne.  Proceeding Cliff in death is his siblings: Richard Crumrine, Gilbert Crumrine, Ruth Neiling, Mae Brown and Virgil Crumrine.

He was known as BC; in his day he was a renowned traveling softball player, notorious for his fierce style of play.  He was a Holgate Athletic Booster for years.  He was a former New Bavaria mayor and current village councilman.  Craig just loved his family and friends and helping them.  And that love was returned.  He was employed by CCNO in maintenance. When he wasn’t “fixing” at work, he was “fixing” for friends and family.

Obituary Preview: David Alan LeVeck was born January 14, 1957 to Richard and Emma (Schlumbohm) LeVeck.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1974-1976.  After his family, music was his greatest love.  Throughout his life he played and sang with some local bands, but his house was always filled with music.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 31 years, Cheryl; his children: Jeromy, Ronda, Elissa (Michael), Jacob (Mary); his dog Mindy; two brothers, Robert and Joe LeVeck; his nine grandchildren and one grandchild due in March.  He was preceded in death by his father Richard, mother Emma, step father Ronald Tyson, eldest son Robert and a sister Linda Romick.
There will be a celebration of David’s life on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the Jewell Community Center.  Visitation will be from 3-5:00 pm with food, drink and music to follow.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Zachrich Family Funeral Home of Holgate.
