Bernard Hoogland - August 29, 1950 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: In loving memory of our cherished Bernard Henry Hoogland, age 73, who in the early hours of May 1, 2024 (at the same Butterworth Hospital where he was born), passed peacefully into heaven with the certainty of his resurrection through Christ, claiming in the final days he feared not death for “I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.”
Born August 29, 1950 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Rev. Jacob and Dorothea Hoogland, Bernie grew up in three Canadian communities where his father served as a Christian Reformed minister. Among his early jobs, including hoeing sugar beets at age thirteen, Bernie was a delivery driver for Standard Kitchens, later becoming an owner operator truck driver, before becoming a full-time parent.
Despite several early forays toward a history degree, he persisted later in life, furthering his education by earning a bachelor’s of sociology from Calvin College while simultaneously raising three children with Helen and also working full-time. Bernie spent the latter half of his career as a supervisor in the Kent County Department of Human Services.
Bernie was a proud and devoted supporter of his children’s many athletic, musical, and educational endeavors, and more recently, his wife’s running activities. After retirement, he and Helen enjoyed traveling by train, hiking in national parks, and relaxing at their Traverse City condo.
Possessed of a strong intellect, he was often fond of lively and detailed discussions about current events, theology, philosophy, and history. Believing actions speak louder than words, he followed Christ’s command to “love thy neighbor” through his resolution to remain in the Boston Square neighborhood for over forty years.
His deep convictions about both being an example of Christ’s love in his local community and fulfilling God’s mandate in the Book of Genesis to steward creation, guided many of his life’s decisions, compelling him to often exhort on the importance of creation care, regularly pick up litter, clear snow from neighbor's sidewalks and driveways, make long-lasting connections with his neighbors, regularly visit sick friends and relatives, maintaining and improving upon the energy efficiency of their house, and maintaining his fuel-saving 1996 Toyota Camry. Bernard and Helen became members of Christ The King Presbyterian Church in America in Hastings, Michigan, where he made his profession of faith.
Bernie’s early love of playing baseball, hockey, and golf was later replaced by his devoted love for his family, including for his surviving wife Helen, his three children, Gregory, and his wife Helena Hoogland; Carrie and her husband Elliott Bark; and his son, Alexander Hoogland. Bernie leaves behind five precious grandchildren who he adored: Evan, Theo, and Owen Hoogland; and Lewis and Luther Bark.
Welcoming his arrival in heaven are his parents, Rev. Jacob and Dorothea Hoogland; his sister Nella Uitvlugt; and three half-siblings: Helen Meulink, John Hoogland, and Marvin Hoogland.
He is survived by one brother, Bill and his wife Grace Hoogland; and his sisters and their husbands: Ann Hoogland, Ruth and Bernie DeHoog, Esther and Jim Rehmus, Dorothy Hoogland Verkerk, and Mary and Ed DeGroot. Numerous nieces and nephews and his wife’s large Zylstra family also grieve his passing. Bernie’s valiant battle against multiple myeloma spanned over six years; his fight against the cancer through extreme pain in the final months is a testament to his strength, perseverance, and to the words “our hope for you (Christ) is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.”

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: John P. Carrington was born in Grand Rapids, MI on January 2, 1959 and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. After graduating from Caledonia High School in 1977, John worked in Amway Manufacturing while simultaneously attending Aquinas College, where he graduated with a business degree. He continued his career at Amway in various roles and met his wife Elaine while working in Marketing and she was working in R&D. They met over a shave cream project, with John joking that Elaine refused to follow his recommendations. John and Elaine married on August 11, 1990. Shortly after, John accepted a position at Amway Thailand in Bangkok where they lived for one and half years. Upon returning to the States, their family grew as they welcomed their daughters Natalie and Sophie. Their adventure continued when John accepted an assignment for Amway Europe in Milan, Italy. John and Elaine moved their family to a lovely villa on Lake Como where they lived for four years. After returning to Ada, John continued to work at Amway until his retirement in 2016.
Once retired, in his true fashion, John enjoyed managing his rental properties and playing the stock market, while never forgetting his mid-afternoon nap with Lola, his beloved cat, on his lap. In his free time, John loved golf, bowling, drinking bourbon, breaking into song at any moment, working out at Tranzform Fitness, watching the Tigers and Lions, and above all else, spending quality time with his friends and family. His only regrets in life were never getting a hole-in-one and never witnessing a Lions Superbowl win.
John was diagnosed with lung cancer in October of 2022. He underwent various treatments while still living the last year and a half of his life to the fullest. This included many trips and celebrating the marriage of his first daughter, Natalie, with his closest friends and family.
John was preceded in death by father Robert J. Carrington Sr., mother Irma Leone (Ellis) Carrington, stepmother Edie (Dykstra) Carrington, brother Daniel (Hanette) Carrington, brother Robert Carrington Jr., uncle Walter Ellis, and cousin Jacob Ellis. John is survived by his wife, Elaine (Egan), daughters, Natalie (Kevin) Cowan and Sophie, brother, Thomas (Colleen) Carrington, and sister Kathy (John) Peot. He is also survived by several beloved family members from the Ellis, Carrington, and Egan families. John was a social butterfly and loved his friends fiercely, including his Caledonia buddies, golf and bowling league friends, Amway colleagues, euchre party friends, and many other friends he made along the way.
A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 7 in the Lakeshore Room at Watermark Country Club (1600 Galbraith Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546) with visitation one hour prior to the service. A luncheon and continued fellowship will immediately follow the service. If you wish to make a memorial donation in John’s name, please donate to First Tee of West Michigan, or a charity of your choice.

Johannes "John" Witte - January 22, 1948 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Johannes "John" Witte (1948 - 2024)
Johannes "John" Witte, a man whose life was a testament to adventure, compassion, and powerful faith, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 27, 2024, beside his wife Lynda and brother Paul, while overlooking the beautiful flowers and trees outside his home office window. Born on January 22, 1948, in Drimmelen, the Netherlands, John embarked on a remarkable journey that touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on the world around him.
As a young immigrant, John arrived in the United States with his parents and six siblings, facing the challenges of adapting to a new country and language. Undeterred by obstacles, he embraced the opportunity to learn English, overcoming setbacks with resilience and determination. John's thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education, culminating in an undergraduate degree from Calvin College and a Master's Degree from Hofstra University. Always open to new experience, John moved with his two young sons and their mother, Mary Witte, to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he worked for the Christian Reformed Church managing a hospitality house for members of the military and young adults. His career path led him to Witte Travel, where he dedicated himself to organizing group tours, specializing in journeys for church and school choir groups. His passion for travel knew no bounds, and he delighted in accompanying his groups to destinations near and far, from the sweeping plains of Africa to the ancient streets of Jerusalem. Trips to Vietnam with Witte Travel & Tours were particularly cherished memories for him. But, he once told his children that the best part of traveling was coming home.
John's true legacy lies not only in the places he visited but in the hearts he touched along the way. He possessed a boundless capacity for empathy, feeling the world's pain as deeply as if it were his own. John was a proud member of Woodlawn Christian Reformed Church, where he curated their art collection in the Woodlawn Ministry Center. His dedication to the church community was evident in his tireless efforts to enrich the spiritual and cultural life of those around him.
John often struggled to reconcile his faith with all of the pain in the world, wondering how a loving God could allow so many people to suffer. But, his faith endured, providing him with solace at the end of his life. In his last days, he told all who would listen that he knows to whom he belongs.
In the last decade of his life, John cultivated loving friendships with his neighbors, who enjoyed drinking wine and bourbon and talking into the night. He found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of community.
In John's final days, his family was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the many, many friends John shared his life with. Each had a special story about how John had given himself to them in times of grief and joy.
John leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lynda Barendse-Witte; his cherished children, Derek (Brooke) and Justin (Olivia); beloved step-children, Joe Barendse (Shelley Lehman), Nate Barendse (Deb), and Sarah Wolters (Dave); as well as his 17 amazing grandchildren. He also leaves his siblings, Henry (Thressa), Teunis, deceased, (Phyllis), Jo Bajema (Dan), Sophia Witte (Phil Vande-Riet), Herman (Laurie), Ina Burmeister (Warren), Paul, and Marlene Kramer (Tom), as well as a host of relatives, friends, and colleagues whose lives were enriched by his presence.
In celebrating John's life, let us honor his spirit of adventure, his boundless compassion, and his powerful faith. Though he may have embarked on his final journey, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. May his soul rest in eternal peace, knowing that his legacy of love will continue to shine brightly in the world he touched.
Visitation hours will be on Saturday, May 4, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm, at Woodlawn CRC Ministry Center, 3190 Burton St. SE.
The memorial service will be held at Calvin University Chapel, on Monday, May 6, at 11:00 am.

Marian Caine Kendall - July 12, 1932 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Marian (Josephine) Caine Kendall, age 91, beloved wife and mother, passed away on April 20, 2024, at Porter Hills Green House Homes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is survived by her daughter Susan Kendall, daughter Sarah Yoder and her husband Greg, her brother Wesley Caine, his wife Ai, and their family, and sister Cheryl Jennison. She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ralph Kendall (2021) and her parents, Stephen and Bertha Caine.
Marian was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and its suburbs. As a child, she studied classical violin and continued into college. She graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. As a young woman, she moved to Washington, D.C. in the 1950’s to be the first female copyeditor at the new magazine, Christianity Today. In Washington, she met Ralph Kendall, and they married in 1961.
Marian centered her life around her family, faith, and education. While her children were growing up, she served in volunteer capacities as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, advocating for strong curriculum. After Ralph’s retirement, the family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they joined Church of the Servant, Christian Reformed Church. When the church moved to its permanent home, she built its library from scratch and served as church librarian for many years. She and Ralph spent their retirement auditing classes at Calvin College together in many subject areas.
Marian was passionate about books and writing and taught both her girls to read. She loved nothing more than to talk about what she was reading and to recommend a good book to her family, friends, and church library patrons. Many enjoyed her book reviews in the church newsletter. In Grand Rapids she also revived her interest in violin, playing for worship services at Church of the Servant and with the Strathgrand Players, a Scottish fiddle group.
When Ralph suffered a stroke in 2014 and moved to Porter Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center, Marian moved to an apartment at Porter Hills to be near him. She visited Ralph every day, sharing daily spiritual reading and conversation until his death.
Marian’s faith was strong. She spoke often of God’s grace and comfort. A favorite verse of hers was Psalm 62:1, “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.” She suffered dementia in her last years and was often confused, and her family are grateful for the many ways the staff and her friends at Porter Hills helped her and cared for her with kindness. Today we rejoice that she finds peace in God’s love.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 11:00 am, at Church of the Servant, Christian Reformed Church, 3835 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
