Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial service arrangements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any charities or organizations that were important to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary for publication?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication. You may need to contact the newspaper or online obituary platform directly to learn their specific requirements and deadlines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and creativity.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life that you're not sure how to address in the obituary, consider consulting with family members or a trusted friend for guidance. It's essential to be honest while still being respectful and tactful.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, quotes or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can be a beautiful way to add depth and context to the obituary. Just be sure to verify the accuracy of any copyrighted material.

How long after someone passes away should I wait before publishing an obituary?

The timing of publishing an obituary can vary depending on cultural or religious traditions. Typically, it's best to wait until after the funeral or memorial service has taken place, but this can vary depending on individual circumstances.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, many online platforms and social media sites allow you to publish an obituary. This can be a convenient way to reach a wider audience and share information quickly.

How do I notify people about an upcoming funeral or memorial service?

In addition to including this information in the obituary itself, you may want to send out separate notifications via email, social media, or phone calls to ensure that everyone who needs to know is informed.

What if I'm not sure about some details in the obituary?

If you're unsure about certain facts or dates in the person's life, it's better to err on the side of caution and omit that information rather than risk publishing something inaccurate.

Can I update or correct an obituary after it's been published?

This may be possible depending on the publication's policies. If you need to make changes or corrections, contact the publication directly as soon as possible.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The length of time an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them up indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I create a memorial website or page for my loved one?

Yes, many websites offer tools for creating memorial pages or websites where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences. These can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one's memory.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

This is a thoughtful way to honor your loved one's memory while also supporting a cause that was important to them. Be sure to specify the charity's name and any relevant details in the obituary.

Can I include personal anecdotes or stories in an obituary?

Absolutely! Personal anecdotes and stories can help bring the person's life story alive and make the obituary more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complicated family relationships in an obituary?

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure about writing an obituary, don't hesitate to ask for help from a funeral home, mortuary, or professional writer who specializes in crafting tributes.

Can I use social media to share news of someone's passing?

Yes, social media can be a useful tool for sharing news quickly with a wide audience. However, be mindful of privacy concerns and respect for those who may not yet have heard the news.
