Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and personal preference. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length than print publications.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Obituaries are often published in local newspapers, online obituary websites, funeral home websites, and social media platforms. They may also be shared through email or printed on funeral programs and other materials.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department or visit their website for submission guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives, visiting local libraries or genealogical societies, or contacting funeral homes or mortuaries that may have records of past services.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy or speech at a funeral?

An obituary can serve as a starting point for crafting a eulogy or speech, but it's recommended to expand upon the information and add personal anecdotes to make it more engaging and meaningful.

What is the purpose of an obituary at a funeral or memorial service?

The obituary serves as a way to honor the deceased and provide context for those attending the service. It may be read aloud during the ceremony or printed on funeral programs.

Can I include humor or personality traits in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or conflicts surrounding the deceased's life or death, it's best to consult with family members or advisors to determine what information should be included or omitted from the obituary.

What if there are errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication immediately to report any errors. They may issue corrections or re-publish the revised obituary.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template or example?

You can use templates or examples as inspiration, but be sure to customize the content to fit your loved one's unique life and story.

How do I ensure my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

An obituary can serve as a lasting tribute by highlighting their achievements, passions, and impact on others. Consider creating a memorial website or sharing stories about their life to keep their memory alive.
