Norman Ma Gill - May 23, 1934 - December 09, 2019

Departed: 12/09/2019 (Woodland)
Obituary Preview: Norman Joseph Ma Gill II, Senior Master Sergeant United States Air Force (Retired).
Born May 23, 1934 In the family home in St. Johnsbury, VT, to Norman Joseph Ma Gill and Eliza Atlanta (Burt) Ma Gill, originally of Quebec, Canada.
He grew up in St. Johnsbury with his family (Gloria, Iris, Oliver and Joyce) and graduated from the St. Johnsbury Trade School 12 June 1952 with a concentration in Radio. He got a job in Boston working for Raytheon, where he worked in electronics and building of “wire looms”, before he enlisted in the Air Force on 10 July 1954.
One of Dad’s early assignments was to Neah Bay, Washington, where he was a radar technician. The Peninsula of Washington was a sparsely populated area in 1956. Dad (and the other service members) would often travel east to Clallam Bay, where there was a small town that had a Tavern. Dad took a liking to the Tavern Keeper’s daughter, Kathleen. She was known by her family as “Tootie”…but Dad erred and thought her nickname was “Boots”. They became an “item” and married on 2 February 1957, (Ground Hog’s Day). The nickname Dad had given her stuck and became their joke for the next 55 years. Mom passed in December 2012, leaving six grown children: Tim, Leah, Monty, Norman III (Joe), Dan, and Daryl.
Dad’s specialty in the Air Force was radar. He worked his way up in the field and was a subject matter expert. He worked around the country on numerous different radar systems including Distant Early Warning systems and other specialized systems. He was sent on two “Isolated Remote” assignments to Alaska ( ’62 and ’70) and an “Accompanied Tour” of 2 years to Iran in 1974. When he returned to the US in 1977 he went back to school to further his education and get his Bachelor’s degree so he could advance his career and his knowledge. He retired at McClellan AFB, Sacramento, CA on 9 August 1984 as a Senior Master Sergeant. In all, he served his country for more than 30 years, as he built his family, his friends and his life. After retirement from the military, he continued to live in Citrus Heights, and worked for Auto Gator and later SAIC- using his love of cars at Auto Gator and his vast knowledge of electronics and mechanics to repair military communications and mobile air traffic control systems at SAIC. Dad was always available to help with car advice and repairs and everyone referred to him as CG – Car God, we benefited from his advice, experience and wisdom.
He loved the weather, the community and his friends in the local area. His family tried for years to get him to move closer to one of his children and he often considered it- however, like everything he did in this world, he listened to the opinions and advise of others, he argued the points with them, (and conceded a few from time to time) but followed his own path.
Dad was an interesting person with many talents. He could cook, sew, play music, fix cars, fix/build furniture and houses, do plumbing and electrical work, even manufacture his own parts when he couldn’t find what he needed, all in addition to his day job of electronics and radar. When Mom (“Boots”) declined due to dementia, he was her primary care giver to her very last day. He basically fed her every bite of every meal, before he even fed himself. He nursed her through at least 15 years of dementia until influenza overcame her weakened body and nearly got him at the same time. He was a caring person who often went out of his way to help others in need, whether he just lent an ear or counseled when they needed, fixed a hot meal, or helped fixing their car: he would do whatever he could. Animals were no different, over the years there was a steady stream of animals who needed care that came through our house. He always had a big heart and an open door.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Hazel (“Boots”) Ma Gill, his brother Oliver Ma Gill, and his sister, Iris Gardner. He is survived by his sisters Gloria Russell and Joyce Ryder.
