James Edward Partridge - March 15, 1957 - April 26, 2024

Obituary Preview: James Edward Partridge, beloved husband of Tracy (Brown) and father of Elliott (Jaclyn) Partridge, Trevor Partridge, Carolyn (David) Hampson, and Naomi (Tony) Sappé, passed away peacefully at home to glory on Friday, April 26, 2024, age 67, after a 16-month battle with advanced cholangiocarcinoma. He was born on March 15, 1957 in Abington, PA, to Donald and Martha Partridge. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1979 and went on to the University of Pittsburgh for a Master’s in Physical Therapy (1983) where he met his wife Tracy. Married on August 20, 1983, they settled in Forest Hills, PA. He and Tracy went on to get their Doctorate in Physical Therapy together at Chatham in 2013. Passionate about his faith and desire to serve the church, Jim obtained a Master’s in Theological Studies at the Reformed Presbyterian Seminary in 2017 and became bi-vocational in 2020, continuing part-time as a PT with PIVOT and part-time as a ministry assistant with his church, City Reformed PCA. Predeceased by his parents and 2 brothers (Donald and John), he is survived by his wife, 4 children and their spouses, 7 grandchildren (Everett, Annika, and Eliza to Elliott & Jackie; Lily, Wesley, and Cassandra to Naomi & Tony; Bethany to Carolyn & David), 2 sisters (Margarita Partridge and Jane (Richard) Johnson) as well as his in-laws Gordon & Carolyn Brown.

Jim invested his time and energies into his family, church (long-time elder) and community and has many “mentor children” who consider Jim as their second father and role-model. In addition to the church, he was involved in the local Boy Scout Troop #90 with his sons, on the board of Trinity Christian School, a driver for the Forest Hills Community “Flivver” Senior Transport, and a member of the East Winds Symphonic Band, playing trumpet. He and his wife delighted in opening their home to many for meals, gatherings, as well as a place to live when needed. His love for the Lord and His creation blended with his desire to be active, and he was often seen around the neighborhood running or hiking at any opportunity he had – up until the Saturday before he passed away.

His message to you would be to seek the Lord Jesus Christ, keep your eyes fixed on Him, utilize the gifts and talents He has given you, and enjoy life to the fullest. Lament with the hard things, have joy in the good and know there is an eternal hope in Christ Jesus waiting. Right now he would be saying “GLORY!” as his body is made new in heaven with Jesus.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity Christian School, 299 Ridge Avenue, Forest Hills PA 15221, on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 3:30pm.

Obituary Preview: Dr. Laura Zue Childress-Hazen, 61, of Churchill, born on April 9, 1963, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Laura’s life was filled with faith, love, laughter, beautiful music, adventures, a giving heart, a desire to serve those most in need, and a desire to spend time with her family. She practiced psychiatry as a profession, but it was more of a Godly calling on her life as she served the homeless and hurting for the majority of her career. She knew every person counted and that every one deserved to be heard and helped. Her career positively impacted entire communities and her example was admired and embraced by those who knew and loved her.

While she resided and practiced medicine and raised her beautiful daughter, Katie, in Pittsburgh, her home was always Florence, Kentucky. She was a graduate of Boone County High School were she was active in sports, band, and named salutatorian at graduation. She attended Thomas Moore College for her undergraduate degree and told stories all the time of the antics she and her friends would get up to, especially while working on the Ohio River biology station. Her medical degree was accomplished at Louisville Medical School. She was an incredibly hard worker and never asked anyone to do anything unless she was willing to be right there beside them.

Even in the midst of so much studying and reading, she found ways to lighten the mood by playing cards or her guitar with her classmates. She was a talented musician and her guitar traveled with her everywhere she went. She could play to a large crowd or just to her little great niece and the joy was always full throttle in the room. She was always the first one in the pool, on the rollercoaster, dancing like no one was watching, playing volleyball and basketball like she was still in high school. She was just an incredibly great person and will be missed greatly by family and friends. One of her standard pieces of attire was tie-dyed clothes. The beautiful, melodic patterns were a perfect representation of this amazing woman.

Laura leaves behind her beautiful and gifted daughter Kathryn Foster Hazen Gushing and her husband Jacob; her loving father Charles Louis Childress; proud sisters Linda Louise Black (Don) and Julia Sue Childress; sister-in-law, Cindy Childress; nephews and nieces, Donald L. Black (Miranda), Michael A. Black, Maeve J. Black, Stella C. Childress, Audrey C. Childress, and Samuel C. Childress; great niece Eden Louise; and her faithful huskies, Rocco and Remi. Laura was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents (Childress/Price), her mother Kathryn Louise Childress (Kitty), her brother Charles Price Childress (Chip), nephew Adam Christopher Black, and her namesake Zue Anne Price (Aunt Zue). There will be a celebration of life in Florence, Kentucky in the near future. Family was very important to Cathy and she loved keeping up with the activities of her nieces and nephews. Amy was proceeded in death by her father, Carl, mother Libby, sister Judy, brother Rick, nephews Glenn & Scott.

Surviving are husband Bruce Bischoff, sister Diane Jervis, brothers David Devin & Robert Devin. Sisters-in-law: Robin Devin (Rick), Betsy Ruhl (Fred), Diane Gemberling (Mark) & Gretchen Thompson (Jeff). And nieces & nephews: Holly, Ted & Jennifer, Eric (Jen) & Darton (Chris), Dwynn, Carl, Jack, & Mae, Grace, Ali, Luke & Eliza, Nathan & Ford.

Amy attended Edgewood HS, and still remains close with many of her classmates. She attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, receiving a degree in Home Economics & Design, followed by a degree in Early Elementary Education from Chatham University.

Amy worked as Office Administrator for Dr. Bhuta's medical practice. Amy then worked for UPMC as a medical coder for 25 years, and was promoted multiple times and awarded The Gold Star / Aces Award.

Amy was able to combine her love of dogs to train & certify 3 of her Newfies;  Olive, Sherman & Oscar to be Pet Therapy dogs. Together they volunteered for 12 + years with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center to bring joy and a smile to the faces of those in need.

Amy always had an eye for fashion & interior design and she was always ready for an adventure. But her super power was to connect with so many and to laugh and be the best friend to everyone she touch.

Carmelina "Carm" Zeff of Monroeville, PA, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Forbes Hospital.

Born March 16, 1935, she was the daughter of Luigi and Eugenia (Disossi) Calabria. Carm was originally from North Braddock. She spent her entire career at Mellon Bank, beginning as a teller in the Braddock branch, and retired as a Branch Manager for the Homestead branch.

Carm is survived by her brother, Bruno Calabria (Chi Chi) of Wilkins Township, and sister-in-law, Robin Calabria (Woodring) of Kersey, PA, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Ben Zeff, her sister Sylvia Gigliotti and husband Anthony Gigliotti, her brother Joseph J. Calabria Sr. and sister-in-law Magdalene Calabria (Strednak).

Carm thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her fondnesses included cruises, card games, and the slot machines at the casino.

An avid "A" level tennis player, Phyllis enjoyed her ranking through the Allegheny Mountain Tennis Association and competitive games with her many friends at racquet clubs and country clubs throughout the region. James "Jim" Getsy - October 03, 1938 - March 15, 2024

Obituary Preview: Of Penn Hills, age 85, passed away surrounded by family and friends on Friday, March 15, 2024. Married for 58 years to his beloved wife Andrea. Loving father of Michael Getsy and Annette Marshall (Shane). Proud grandfather of Jack. Brother of the late Regis Getsy (Linda) and brother-in-law of the late Dennis Kuftic, Norman Kuftic (Jennifer), Vernon Kuftic, and Vicki Kuftic Horne (Eric).

Jim was a man of many talents and interests, but he was first and foremost a storyteller. His stories were of his growing up in Braddock, PA, son of Ann and Andrew Getsy. Jim told tales of the mischief of two boys growing up in an era of considerable freedom and homemade adventure.  He wrote a small memoir of he and Regis's elementary year escapades entitled "The Yellow Raincoat." Jim graduated from Duquesne and Pitt universities.  He had a successful 33-year career at Housing and Urban Development, retiring as Program Manager and Special Assistant to the Director.  At retirement in 2001, his life work began.

Though he started a hobby of wood carving before he married, he went on to create full sail ships, ducks, geese, swans and birds.  He gifted more than 150 of his creations to friends, family and non-profit fundraisers. He refinished trunks, built a "Country Store" shed, and a remarkable dollhouse. He played chess, scrabble, tennis and was always ready for a game of poker. He was a word master and started each morning solving puzzles.  He landscaped a beautiful back yard and devoted his early retirement years to landscaping Crescent Hills Park in Penn Hills.  Jim loved listening to bluegrass music at the Penn Hills "Barn." With his wife he biked, hiked, and did extensive traveling. Jim, Andrea, and daughter Annette were members of the Pittsburgh Slovakians. Jim was a long-time treasurer of the Slovak Radio Hour. Jim treasured his Slovak heritage and went to Slovakia four times to visit with relatives.

Jim was one of the founding members of the Alliance for Consumer Protection, the Penn Hills Soccer Association (where his grandson Jack now plays), Penn Hills CDC and Penn Hills Shade Tree Commission. He was a former president of the Penn Hills Rotary and Crescent Hills Civic Association. Among other volunteer activities he worked at Penn Hills Service Center for six years. In his later life he was elected a Penn Hills Councilman. Jim loved his community. The community honored him by lowering both the Penn Hills' and state flags.

He was an anti-litter crusader and could be seen until his passing walking the neighborhood with a litter pick in hand.  But Jim could not walk past discarded wood without imagining a future for it and sometimes dragging the wood home. He had hoped to walk 100 miles in the month of March 2024.

Jim was a member of Fit 4 Boxing Club in Murrysville and with his friends there worked to "Punch out Parkinson's."  Jim received tender and attentive care at AGH Forbes Hospital Critical Care Unit.  Jim's final gift, his final deed, was to be a donor to someone in need.

Michelle Simpson - January 27, 1963 - March 04, 2024

Obituary Preview: On Monday, March 4, 2024, accompanied by birdsong, rising along sunbeams, lifted by the loving embraces of her family and friends, the joyous spirit of Michelle Simpson returned to the purest love and light that gifted her to this world sixty-one years ago.

Michelle loved her life and all those who peopled it fiercely and fully: her precious daughter, Retta Simpson; her devoted wife, Sue Subocz; her adoring parents, Mary Lou and Jack Simpson; and all her loving family: aunts Patricia (Milo) Windrick and Linda (William) Sciaretti; uncle Stanley (Kathy) Duncan; cousins Derek Windrick, Crystal Sciaretti, April (Adam) Anderson and their children Ariana, Ashlyn, Alec, and Ainsley, and Scott (Mindy) Duncan and Kinley; Sue’s daughters Debbie (Matt) Davis, Jenny (Josh) McKinny, and Emily Subocz; and many other relatives in her extended family. Michelle created and loved family in every age and place she lived, formerly in Maryland with Mim Caris in Baltimore, and Thom Lieb in Towson. Michelle cultivated a wild garden of beloved and lucky friends and colleagues, as well as legions of grateful students. Among those who will miss Michelle so dearly are her pets Daisy, Fluffy, and Willow.

Michelle was dedicated to her vocation as a teacher and served as a Professor of Theatre and Communications for thirty-four years at the College of Southern Maryland. Among her many accomplishments there was creating CSM’s first group of online courses and service as the founding chair of the Faculty Innovation Team.

Michelle enriched our lives with her musical laughter, brilliant smile, and a dazzling array of talents for making each day, every milestone, and her family’s home simply beautiful. Michelle’s long and graceful fingers were almost always in motion: animating a funny story, knitting something colorful and cozy, turning a page, selecting a thoughtful gift, stitching a Halloween costume, grading an assignment, wiping away a tear, restoring a cottage, conducting a lecture, extending into Warrior, baking scones, stringing Christmas lights, and sharing constellations of tender touches with her loved ones. The poet Mary Oliver wrote: To live in this world you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go,

to let it go.

Michelle intentionally practiced those three things with her whole being. The letting go we all will face one day came far too soon, far too quickly for Michelle. May we each meet that time with Michelle’s same courage, grace, and love. Marilyn W.B. Parker - February 20, 1927 - February 21, 2024

Obituary Preview: Marilyn Lorraine Ware Brown Parker, formerly of Forest Hills, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, in St. Petersburg, FL. She was 97 years of age.

Marilyn, the first of three children, was born on February 20, 1927, to her loving parents, G. Seymour Ware and Ora Greene Ware, at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As an infant she was baptized at the Church of the Holy Cross and continued her religious growth at Bethesda Presbyterian Church.

As a child, she developed a profound love of learning and completed her elementary and middle school education at Lincoln and Rodgers School. In 1945, after graduating from Westinghouse High School, she went on to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Pittsburgh.

Marilyn was a dedicated and devoted mother to her three children Patricia Brown Stephens, Edward Parker, and Wayne Parker. They meant the world to her, and she would do anything for them. However, her kindness and generosity did not end with her family. She was affectionately called "Ma Parker" by countless children in the community.

For nearly 30 years, Marilyn taught in Pittsburgh Public Schools. From kindergarteners to third graders, she left a remarkable impact on the young people in her care ensuring that they not only learned how to read and write but also how to be kind to others. The number of students and families that she assisted and who acknowledged the difference she made in their lives numbers in the thousands. She will be remembered for her heart and for the love she shared with everyone she encountered, especially the children she taught.

In 1984, Marilyn retired and spent her time doing what she loved most, eating ice cream, drinking Pepsi, and helping to care for her granddaughter, Alyia Gaskins. She also enjoyed ceramics, arts and crafts, and sewing clothes and Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, great nieces, and nephews.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her father and mother. She is survived by her sister, Patsy Jayne Ware, and brother, Seymour Ware; her children Patricia Brown Stephens, Edward Parker, and Wayne Parker; her nephews and nieces, David Ware, Pandora Johnson and Harlan Ware; 7 grandchildren; 10 great nieces and nephews; and 7 great grandchildren.

Her smile reflected her joyful spirit. She departed this earth peacefully with dignity, strength, and full of love for those who went before her and for those she leaves behind. She truly loved people--and if you knew her, you immediately felt it. She will be missed dearly.

Noel was a well known member and avid supporter of the surf music community and a strong supporter of the members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, his father having played with them for over 40 years. Noel was also a strong supporter of his daughter's activities with Special Olympics, as well as the Pittsburgh Holocaust Center. He was a hunter, avid motorcyclist, and was a Single Action Shooter Re-enactor where his nickname was “Pittsburgh Pete”. He enjoyed watching Formula 1 and NASCAR racing, classic films, westerns, film noir, George A Romero's works including Living Dead movies, and all things classic Disney.
