Bob Weisenberger - September 29, 1948 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (Winterville)
Obituary Preview: Robert "Bob" Weisenberger passed peacefully at his home on April 29 after spending a beautiful day with all of his family.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrating by Rev James Magee Ill and Rev Nagona Baswekundola, on Saturday, May 18th at 11 AM. Family will receive guests one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the columbarium at St. Peter Church next to his Twins Buddy Ed Adams. His grandchildren will be the honorary pallbearers.
He was born on September 29th, 1948 to Dr. George and Trudy Weisenberger. He was raised in Cheltenham (Philadelphia) and after several work relocations, had lived in Greenville for the past 45 plus years. As a lumber salesman for Garris Evans, Bob took pride in watching his builders grow this town to what it is today. When he wasn't working, he was being a loyal Phillies and Notre Dame fan or with his family fishing, coaching Little League or supporting Rose High soccer in it’s early years. As the kids grew, he discovered fly fishing and tons of back road trips to the Virginia and North Carolina mountains in search of the perfect spot. He shared this adventure with his children and grandchildren who many now embrace that mountain and fly-fishing spirit. These family trips are treasured and the source of many memories and stories. These memories were most valued as his illness caused him to become withdrawn from so many. He valued dearly his Catholic faith and while he kept it close and personal to him, he was proud to be a member of St Peter Catholic Church since 1977. Bob served in many capacities there over the years, holding a special admiration for all the priests who entered and ministered to his life.
Awaiting him in Heaven are his parents and In-laws, Sonny and Edith Barrett; his sister, Kathie Weisenberger; brother-in-law, Chris Rebello and numerous special aunts and uncles.
Those left to share memories are his loving wife of over 54 years, Patti; brother, Scott Weisenberger of North Wales, PA; sons Bob and wife Jackie Weisenberger of Raleigh NC; Dan Weisenberger and wife Dr Anne Spuches of Greenville; favorite daughter, Casey Weisenberger and fiancée Chip Mitchell of Wilson, NC.; eight fantastically spoiled grandchildren: Shane Weisenberger, Barrett Smith, Nate Weisenberger, Macey Smith, Vivian Smith, Danielle Smith, Peyton and Lily Mitchell. His sister-in-law, Anne Coleman and husband, Melvin and brother-in-law, Joe Barrett and other extended family in Richmond VA who he held dear too. Over the years he had several pure breed mutts who were equally spoiled. Many close and dear friends who know who they are as well.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation and gratitude to the hospice nurses of Pruitt Hospice and Dr. Steven Hamstead for their care and devotion.

Jesse Dennis Matthews - March 15, 1942 - December 17, 2023

Departed: 12/17/2023 (Winterville)
Obituary Preview: The family of J.D. Matthews is sad to announce that J.D. passed from this world on December 17, 2023 in Greenville, North Carolina after a brief illness. He will be truly missed by his surviving family and friends.
Jesse Dennis “JD” Matthews was born on March 15, 1942 in Enola, Arkansas to Ingram Roe Matthews and Geneva Cargile Matthews. He spent his formative years living with his mother and grandparents while his father served in the Army during World War II. Following the war his family moved first to Russellville, Arkansas and then on to Springdale and Lowell, Arkansas. After graduation from Rogers High School in 1960 he enrolled at Arkansas Tech University for two years before joining the U.S. Navy. He was stationed for a time at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. where he met and married Erma Fuschino. He was serving at the Pentagon on November 22, 1963 when President Kennedy was assassinated, and did not leave his post for the next four days as the country was on high alert due to the assassination. In the mid-sixties, JD and Erma welcomed their daughter Tina into this world and then again on the same spring day 4 years later, their daughter Denise joined the fold. After discharge from the Navy, JD returned to Arkansas Tech to finish his college education on the G.I. Bill. Following college graduation, JD began his career in the insurance industry working for St. Paul Fire and Marine. He became a field agent for the company and moved with his family to several cities before settling in Des Moines, Iowa. JD never shied away from relating that he went through a rough spell in his late 20’s and early 30’s as he struggled with alcohol addiction, and all the consequences such an addiction can cause, including divorce and separation from his children and family for a period. But JD finally won that battle with alcohol and spent the rest of his life sober and helping others get and maintain sobriety. He used his lifetime love of horses as a vehicle to maintain his own sobriety by working at a ranch in Enid, Oklahoma before ultimately starting his own Silverheels Ranch where he trained and kept horses. He spent several years with his second wife Johnie Beth and his brother Stephen living the life of a genuine cowboy. His daughters would spend summers with him on the ranch and loved living a ranch hand’s life for a while. By the late 80’s ranch life had run its course and JD moved to Dallas to rejoin the insurance industry. He then met the love of his life, Sandy Steadham and her 6-year-old daughter Zoe. JD and Sandy were married in July 1996 in front of many friends and family at Lake Texoma, Texas. JD and Sandy went on many adventures throughout the US and Europe, and he even got his “city girl” wife to go with him to the Calgary Stampede in Canada and the Bull Riding championships in Las Vegas. After JD’s retirement their lives took a different path as Sandy suffered several strokes leading to debilitating health issues. JD was proud to be her principal caregiver for the last years of her life, until she passed away in the fall of 2022. Sadly, less than a year later Zoe passed away as well. Although his golden years were not what he expected, JD never lost his zest for life nor his sense of humor. He loved to reminisce about his rodeo days, his life on the ranch, his trips with Sandy, his ever-present optimistic plans for the future, and his fond memory of Sandy reminding him “Don’t forget your hat” whenever he left the house. JD is survived by his daughters Tina Wolk (Bob) of Somerset, Pennsylvania, Denise Hering (Bill) of Federalsburg, Maryland, grandchildren Tabitha (Jamie), Jon (Heather), Rhianna, Kim and Jamie, great grandchildren Matthew, Noah, Kasey, Jace, Oliver and Maxwell Dennis, his brothers David Matthews (Mary Beth) of Lowell, Arkansas; Stephen Matthews (Laura) of Bedford, Texas, and only and beloved sister, Deborah Campbell (the late Craig) of Rogers, Arkansas, and a host of friends all across the country. Preceded in death by parents, beloved wife Sandy, daughter Zoe, and great granddaughter Kayla Wolk. A joint memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2024 at the Goad Springs Cemetery in Lowell, Arkansas for JD, Sandy and Zoe.

Clarke C. Chitty, III - September 23, 1945 - December 09, 2023

Departed: 12/09/2023 (Winterville)
Obituary Preview: Clarke C. Chitty III - A man of service, smiles, and heart. In the quiet embrace of eternity, Clarke embarked on his heavenly journey on December 9th, 2023. In his final moments, Clarke's family was there to hold his hand and shower him with love. It's only fitting, as he showered us with love for all of these years.
Clarke moved through his days with a smile. He loved Elvis and oldies, his heart singing along to tunes that mirrored the rhythm of his spirit. He had the enthusiasm of a true sports aficionado, and even more so if the Red Sox, Jaguars, or Gators were winning. He took pleasure in serving the community whether through Meals on Wheels deliveries, homeless outreach programs, or as a church usher. He was "too blessed to be stressed," fancied a good key lime pie, and loved a trip to the beach capped off with a new brew-thru t-shirt.
Both at work and home, Clarke had a big heart. He was devoted to the Lord and his family. Clarke's love for his bride, Portia, stood as an enduring melody, a testament to the boundless depths of unconditional love. Their journey of 31 years, an inspiring tale of commitment and companionship, illuminated the path for all who bore witness. Similarly, Clarke loved his kids and grandkids. He could always be counted on for love, affection, attention, or support. His grandkids called him "Pipa," and Pipa was their number one fan. He was always good for a hug, never wanted to miss a game or practice, and reveled in their achievements.
Born September 23, 1945, Clarke grew up in Jacksonville, FL graduating from Lee High School in 1963 and then proudly serving in the United States Navy for 26 years, retiring as a Senior Chief in 1989. Prior to enlisting, Clarke was a member of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Clarke, at the age of seventeen, made the decision to serve our nation and enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve in spring of 1963, later entering active duty on the 17th of March 1965. He was first assigned to VAP-62, a Heavy Photographic Squadron at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. During his time with VAP-62 the squadron was involved in mapping operations of Iceland and Spain. Clarke’s next duty station was at the Naval Exam Center in Great Lakes, Illinois. After his time in Great Lakes, in November of 1970 Clarke was transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, CVS-11. The Fighting “I” was home ported at Naval Air Station Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Clarke was part of the ships company during the two years he was stationed on CVS-11. During his time of the Intrepid, he was able to indulge his love of music, and had an “oldies” show on the ship’s radio station. Clarke would spin all of his favorite Motown and early rock and roll tunes, all while doing his best Wolfman Jack impersonation. During Clarke’s time on the Intrepid, she conducted NATO exercises in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic and participated in submarine detection operations which were conducted in the Baltic and at the edge of the Barents Sea above the Arctic Circle. Clarke’s only son, Clarke IV was born while he was on his second deployment onboard the Intrepid in 1972. Clarke’s next duty station would be with the Disaster Recovery Department at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Davisville, Rhode Island in September of 1972. He then had a brief stint as an instructor in NBC warfare defense. As a Yeoman, Clarke was the last military person to leave the center at Davisville when it closed in August of 1975. The Navy next sent Clarke to VA-46, an attack squadron based at Naval Air Station Cecil Field in Florida. During his time with VA-46 the squadron deployed on the USS John F. Kennedy, CV-67, three times. During Clarke’s first deployment on CV-67, the Kennedy was involved in a collision with the USS Belknap, CG-26, killing a fellow Yeoman that was in the office next to Clarke’s. During his second deployment on the Kennedy, the ship was involved in two separate incidents on the same day. The first was losing an F-14 Tomcat overboard due to a catapult failure, and the second was the USS Bordelon, DD-881, losing control while refueling and colliding with the Kennedy. Clarke’s third deployment on the USS Kennedy would be his last deployment on a ship. In April of 1977, he transferred to Washington D.C. Little did he know that the Pentagon would be his Navy home until his retirement. His first assignment was with the Joint Chiefs of Staff Operations Directorate. He would work with JCS until November of 1981 when he moved to the Logistics Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations. During his time at JCS, Clarke achieved the rank of Chief Yeoman. In March of 1983, Clarke transferred to the Office of the Comptroller of the Navy Budgets and Reports. Looking back, this was one of his favorite groups of fellow sailors he worked with. After rising to the rank of Senior Chief Yeoman, Clarke returned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in March of 1986 for his final position in the Navy with the Office of Manpower and Personnel Directorate. In 1989, Senior Chief Chitty made the difficult decision to retire from the Navy instead of uprooting his family from the area that had been home for the last twelve years. Twelve years at the Pentagon was almost unheard of for an enlisted man. Clarke’s retirement ceremony was held in the Pentagon’s center court, something typically reserved for officers. He then went on to serve 20 years of civil service for the Department of the Navy as a Security Specialist in Northern Virginia before retiring to North Carolina in 2010.
Clarke is remembered as a loving, devoted husband, someone that was welcoming and friendly to all, that would go out of his way to make you happy.
Clarke was preceded in death by his parents, Clarke Jr. and Eleanor Chitty, his brother John Chitty, and his grandson Joshua Clark. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Portia, son Clarke IV (Mary), Amy Williams (Josh), Jimmy Clark (Yulia), brothers Fred (Faye) and Bill (Edwina), sister Carol Pate (Steve), grandchildren – Caitlin, Chloe, Bryce, Emily, Jimmik, Olivia, and Milania, great-granddaughter, Violet, along with a multitude of nieces and nephews.
