Patsy Ruth James - May 17, 1943 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Benbrook)
Obituary Preview: Patsy “Pat” Ruth Hesselbein James, 78, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on April 15, 2022. She was surrounded by her son, Mike, daughter, Shannon, and daughter-in-law, Debi.
Visitation:  6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Winscott Road Funeral Home, 1001 Winscott Road, Benbrook, Texas 76126.  Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2022, at Normandale Baptist Church, 2001 Chapel Creek Blvd., Fort Worth, Texas 76108.
Patsy was born to Thomas F. and Gladys Kissire Hesselbein in Vallejo, California on May 17, 1943. She had two older sisters, Shirleen, and Christine. The family moved back to Morrilton, Arkansas after the war, to continue farming. They made several moves between Arkansas and Southeast Missouri before settling in Hot Springs in 1953. Patsy became a proud big sis when her brother, Tom was born in 1955. She attended Junior High and High School in Hot Springs, Arkansas, was a 4-year first chair clarinet player in the Hot Springs High Marching Band and graduated in 1961.
Patsy married her prince charming, Kenneth L. James, on January 19, 1963, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. They celebrated their 59th anniversary this past January. She was blessed with her first child, Michael, in 1964, and worked at National Rejectors in Hot Springs until 1967 when the family relocated to White Settlement, Texas. She was blessed with her second child, Shannon in 1970, and the family was complete. Pat spent her professional career in the insurance industry with Miller Insurance and Houston General Insurance before joining White Settlement ISD in 1990; until her retirement in 2003. Throughout the years, Pat was known for her home cooking and hospitality. It was not uncommon for a hired plumber or HVAC worker to be sitting at the James’ table having breakfast. If you were friends of Mike and Shannon growing up, at some point Pat would introduce you to her famous Chocolate Gravy. It is an Arkansas original, and one of many recipes she passed down all the way to her great grandkids. When it’s made now it’s called Mamoo’s Chocolate Gravy!
For most kids the approach of summer brought a family vacation to some new location, but for Mike and Shannon it was, “When are we going to Arkansas!” You see, Hot Springs, Arkansas was considered the nucleus of family for Pat. It was HOME where her parents lived. Even one year when the James family broke the norm and visited Houston and Galveston for the first time, the return trip was not a straight line back to White Settlement, but rather a detour through Hot Springs. Ken would say that’s where Pat recharged her battery.
Her brother Tom said about her – She was the remaining Matriarch of the family that kept us connected to the prior generations. She loved the family and keeping up with everyone related especially the kids. Although my sister, she and Ken seemed more like parents to me because of the age difference.  Whatever success I’ve had in life I owe greatly to them. She was always there in time of need for everyone in the family. She loved to cook and create traditions that transcended generations: chocolate gravy, briskets, tunnel of fudge cake, butter roll, French onion dip with Mountain Dew on Friday nights while watching the late show and Jello knox blocks for the kids. Most of all she loved life and fought fiercely to be around, if possible, to be a part of family and friends and see what happened next.
For those who knew Pat well knew that she had a fiery personality. She was passionate in her beliefs, a loyal friend and defender of family and HOME. Pat should have written a book on how to return merchandise for a full refund – even if the return date had expired. Her mentoring was passed down to her daughter, Shannon, daughter-in-law, Debi and granddaughter, Amanda. Pat was also viewed within the family as the perfect advocate when anyone was in the hospital, rehab, or any associated medical care. She had a canny way of holding people accountable and persuading others to improve the care provided.
Pat was a member of Normandale Baptist Church for over 45 years, she cherished her church family and especially her Sunday school class and Keno group fellowships.
The family, on behalf of Pat, would like to give special thanks to some of the wonderful medical professionals who cared for her during her battle with Cancer and in her final days. In Pat’s eyes, Dr. Asad Dean, Oncologist, was an angel - extending her quality of life and eventual elimination of her tumor. Dr. Dean made countless off duty visits and returned phone calls to Pat throughout her 13- year battle. A special heart felt thank you to the staff at Harris Methodist Hospital in downtown Fort Worth. The James family has some first names of those angels, but as a way not to leave anyone out, would like to recognize them by department and those from other departments that supported. Thanks to the staff in the ER, third & sixth floor Harris tower, and first floor of the Heart Center. All those who cared for Pat are viewed as exemplary in care, compassion, attentiveness, and faith.
Pat was preceded in death by her father, Thomas F. and mother, Gladys Kissire Hesselbein; sister, Shirleen, and her husband, Don Eslick; sister, Christine, and her husband, Dr. Richard Adler.
Survivors: Husband, Kenneth L. James; brother, Tom and wife, April Hesselbein of Little Rock, Arkansas; son, Mike and wife, Debi James of Fort Worth; daughter, Shannon and husband, Kevin Craft of Allen; grandson, Mike and wife, Amber James of Weatherford; granddaughter, Amanda and husband, Neil Mellers of Gravette, Arkansas; great- grandchildren, Mackenzie, Maddux, Livi Cay, Celia, Quinn, and C.J.; and many nieces, nephews, family friends, and church family.

Wilma Katherine Berry - April 06, 1925 - March 07, 2022

Departed: 03/07/2022 (Benbrook)
Obituary Preview: Wilma Katherine Johanson Berry (Jo Berry) was born April 6, 1925, into a large family, the Johanson family in Fredericksburg, Texas. She passed away March 7, 2022, in Fort Worth, Texas. People that have known her over the last 60 or 70 years have never heard her called by her first name as her maiden name, Johanson, got shortened to Jo. And when grandchildren came along, she was known to them as “Jo-Jo”.
Jo was full of life and loved her family and friends in a style that was her very own. Jo was known for her beauty and impeccable style. She was also known for her amazing cooking especially her BBQ brisket and smoked chicken. Jo loved playing in the yard growing things green. Wilma Jo lived the last 13 years with her oldest son Jeff, who lovingly cared for his mother as her primary care provider with Susan his wife supporting him. The last four months of her life were also supported by Community Healthcare of Texas, providing home hospice care through a very difficult and lengthy end of life experience. The hospice nurse present on her last day said that her passing was the most peaceful that she had ever witnessed.
Her life growing up was during a tough time in history, the Great Depression, which kept the “misery factor” high. Jo was one of 11 children born to Peter Abraham and Emma Nora Johanson, and everyone worked. They worked on her uncle’s farm, and any other work they could find. Jo never talked of her childhood, as though it was all a closed chapter and there were more relevant matters to talk about. It could also be said that she did not have a childhood-people of that time seemed to go straight from infancy to adulthood and just skip childhood altogether.
During World War II everyone seemed to be involved somehow with the war effort, Jo and her sister, Vera were part of a group of six women in their hometown to go to Fort Worth for work. Convair, (also known as the “Bomber Factory”) was hiring women to build bombers for the Army Air Corps. Jo worked in the Quality Control Department. While she was helping to get bombers delivered, the young man she was destined to marry, 19-year-old Navy radioman, John Berry, was attached to the Marine landing party going ashore at IwoJima on the first wave, then Okinawa, and later the occupation of Japan. When the war ended, Jo stayed in Fort Worth. John Berry somehow survived and came back to his hometown of Fort Worth where they met and were married at the Methodist church that John Berry grew up in, now known as University United Methodist Church. John and Jo Berry bought a house and had three boys, Jeffrey, John Kent, and Chris, who were affectionately called the “three house apes”. After surviving the Great Depression and a World War, the challenge of raising three boys was tough, but not impossible, and these boys grew up to bring into the world ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. These children were the great joy in Jo-Jo’s life. It was almost as if she experienced childhood for the first time vicariously through them. Jo Berry was part of what is now called the “Greatest Generation”. At the same time, we celebrate her life, the celebration is mixed with a touch of mourning because we know that they just don’t make people exactly like this anymore, the last of a rare breed, and that fact makes it harder to say goodbye.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents; and 10 of her siblings.
She is survived by her sons, Jeff Berry and his wife, Susan of Fort Worth, Kent Berry and wife, Vicki of Crawford Texas, Chris Berry of Salt Lake City, Utah; one daughter-in-love, Carol Helzer Berry; ten grandchildren, Kelsi Berry and her significant other, Matthew Wendt, Jennifer Phillips Norris and fiancé, Andy Miller, Ryan Ireland-Phillips and wife, Kelsey, Lindsay Truly and husband, Kyle, Bethany Jordan, Benjamin Berry and wife, Callye, Brittany Smith and husband, Trent, Lou Berry, John Berry and Jason Berry; 13 great-grandchildren, Joel Norris, Mackenzie Smith and fiancé, Tyler Ross, Josiah Norris, Jared Norris, Gareth Jordan, Benjamin Jordan, Owen Truly, Olivia Truly, Lillian Boyter, Leighton Williams, Luke Smith, and Blaze and Wade Berry.
Jo was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church on Southwest Blvd in Fort Worth until Bethel UMC closed.  Service of Death and Resurrection will be held at University United Methodist Church, Fort Worth on what would have been her 97th birthday, April 6th at 2:00 PM with its pastor, Rev. Beth Evers and Rev. Kent Berry, officiating. Service music will be provided by Vicki Cribbs Berry. Jo requested that her ashes be interred near her father’s grave at the Eckart Community Cemetery.

Born on a Thursday, Jimmy DeArman arrived in Fort Worth to a young mother and an absent Army father. Charles E. Bailey - August 30, 1939 - February 16, 2022

Departed: 02/16/2022 (Benbrook)
Obituary Preview: Charles Edward Bailey (Charlie aka Pops), passed away on Wednesday, February 16, at 5:33 p.m., in his home in Benbrook, Texas.  He was surrounded by his family.
Charlie was born in New Albany, Indiana, on August 30, 1939 to Jesse and Lucy (Cotner) Bailey.  He spent his youth in the New Albany, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky areas.  One of his first jobs was gassing airplanes at Standford Field in Louisville.  From there he worked for the post office in Louisville, and then joined the US Army in 1958.  While in the Army, he was stationed in Nürnberg, Germany.  It is there, in 1959, that he met his life-long sweetheart Rosa (Kreissel).  They were married six months later, on April 20, 1960 in Nürnberg, and have spent the last 62 years together.
After his three-year tour in the Army, Charlie joined the Air Force in 1961.  During his military career he and Rosa were stationed back in Germany many times.  Each time they were stationed there, they were blessed with a daughter.  Elfriede was born in Nürnberg, Michele was born in Neubrucke, and Christine was born in Berlin.  They thoroughly enjoyed their time in Germany spent with close-knit family and friends, especially Rosa’s parents and siblings, who adored Charlie.
After his service in the Army and Air Force, Charlie began a second career in US Civil Service, continuing the work he loved as a procurement and contract specialist.  He was stationed in Huntsville, Alabama, various sites in Germany, and had a six-year tour in Seoul, Korea.  He retired from civil service in 1994.  Although he and Rosa had never been to Texas before, they settled in Benbrook, to be closer to their daughters, Elfriede and Michele, who lived there.  Their youngest daughter, Christine, lived in Waco, at the time. Eventually, everyone settled in Benbrook.
After almost 40 years, Charlie finally had roots again.  He got to watch his family grow.  He has nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  It is here that his name changed to Pops.  His first grandchild was another girl, Katie.  After that, it was boys all the way.  First Alex, then Mac, Spencer, Kale, and Landon, Liam, and lastly, two girls by marriage, Lauren and Cambria.  Then his great-grandchildren Henry, William, and Willow Rose were born.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and sportsman.  He got to share those passions with his children and grandchildren.  One of his greatest joys was time spent at the baseball field watching his grandsons play.  He was ever the proud grandfather.
At 6’3”, Pops was a man of great stature.  He was an intelligent man, of a serious nature, and had a high moral character and a tenacious spirit, which he instilled in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  His physical presence is sorely missed, but his spirit is still felt by all.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy and Jesse Bailey; his brothers, Bud, Bill, and Donald; and his sisters, Pat, and Betty.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Rosa; their three daughters, Elfriede (Scott), Michele (Nick), and Christine (Sean); his grandchildren, Katie (Matthew), Lauren (Phil), Alex, Cambria, MacKenzie (Zoe), Spencer, Kale, Landon (Lexi), and Liam; great-grandchildren, Henry, William, and Willow Rose; sisters, Vickie, Shirley, and Linda; brothers, Ted, and Rick; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Winscott Road Funeral Home.

Hattie Grace Welch - January 07, 1933 - February 11, 2022

Departed: 02/11/2022 (Benbrook)
Obituary Preview: Hattie Welch of Benbrook, Texas, died on February 11, 2022, at the age of 89, of heart failure.
In remembrance of Hattie Welch’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to The Women’s Center, 1723 Hemphill St, Fort Worth, Texas 76110, https://www.womenscentertc.org/donate-online.
Hattie was born on January 7, 1933, to Milton S. Leach and Eunice Marie Barrett Leach in Pampa, Texas. Along with her two brothers and her sister, she grew up in and around the small towns of South-Central Texas, where her father pastored a number of small churches. Hattie began taking music lessons before she was old enough to go to school. As a teen, she and her sister Dorothy played piano, accordion, and portable organ for church services. Hattie graduated from Beeville High School.
Hattie attended Howard Payne University, where she studied Elementary Education. At Howard Payne University she met Norvel Wayne Welch, whom she married in 1951. Together they eventually had four children. Hattie always had music in her heart. She loved practicing, playing, and teaching piano, and making beautiful piano arrangements. Though she was accomplished at sight-reading, she preferred to play by ear, making her a wonderful accompanist for singers and instrumentalists.
From 1951 to 1963, in each place Hattie and Norvel lived and served across the United States, Hattie played piano in church. She was a church pianist in Brownwood, Texas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Keller, Texas; Lewisburg, Tennessee; Baltimore, Maryland; and Grand Prairie, Texas. Norvel and Hattie were appointed as missionaries of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1963. They served as missionaries to Brazil for 19 years.
During their early years in Brazil, Hattie taught the children in English at home using the Calvert School curriculum, while they also went to a local Brazilian school. For many years, Hattie regularly played piano at First Baptist Church in Niterói, and later at the Baptist Church in Vital Brazil. Many of her hymn arrangements were published by the Brazilian Baptist Publishing House (JUERP). She was also a Sunday School teacher and director for years. She especially loved working with teenagers and youth. Upon their return to the U.S. in 1982, Norvel and Hattie moved to Wichita, Kansas, where they served at Olivet Baptist Church from 1983 to 1988, and Parkview Baptist Church from 1988 to 1995. When they retired in 1995, they moved back to Texas to be close to their family. Hattie continued playing in churches for years, most recently at Agape Baptist Church in Fort Worth.
Hattie was known for her quick wit and easy, joking manner. She was beloved by the young people she taught for her quirky humor that opened doors for her to ask deep questions, listen intentionally, and respond practically. Hattie loved life. Through the difficulties of aging, serious illness, and Norvel's death, she always found great joy in being alive.
Hattie was preceded in death by her husband, Norvel Wayne Welch; her son, Donald Wayne Welch; her parents, Milton S. Leach and Eunice Leach Bradshaw; and brother, Milton Leach Jr.
Hattie is survived by her daughter, Deb Welch of Benbrook, Texas; daughter, Libby Parker and husband, James of Fort Worth, Texas; and son, Larry Welch and wife, Graça of Niteroi, Brazil; daughter-in-law, Janet Welch; grandchildren, Luke (Krista) Welch, David (Tricia) Welch, Danny (Alexa) Welch, Robert (Paola) Welch, and Liz (Erick) Baker; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Salser; and brother, Chuck Leach; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Hattie was buried in a private family ceremony in Cresson Cemetery in Godley, Texas.
