Obituary Preview: Michael A. Martens, 74, of Waunakee, died unexpectedly at home on January 28, 2022. He was born on May 29, 1947, in Milwaukee, to William A. and Loretta (Barbian) Martens. Mike graduated from Sacred Heart Seminary in 1967 and UW-Madison in 1970. He married Virginia “Gini” Preuss on June 28, 1970.

Mike was in the automobile business for many years working in sales at Middleton Motors, management at Zimbrick Isuzu and Acura, owner of Style Motors, and buyer for Kayser used cars.

Known for his sense of humor, sharp wit, and memorable anecdotes, Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends, Randy, Joe, Walter, and Jim; spending time with his family and friends; Packer, Brewer and Badger games; getting his pilot’s license; crossword puzzles; sudoku; gardening; reading and history.

Mike is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gini; daughter, Heather (Stephen) Raffel; grandson, Michael; sisters and brother, Judith Martens, Kathleen (Don) Risch, Elaine (Don) Rappel, Mary (Ron) Sielski, and Mark (Carol) Martens; sisters-in-law, Diane Hallihan and Joanne Martens; nieces; nephews; a large extended family; and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Martens; and a granddaughter, Sarah Raffel.

Upon Mike’s wishes, he was an organ and tissue donor - a private family service was held.

Memorials can be made in Mike’s name to either Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM), Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, or Tunnels to Towers Foundation.

Obituary Preview: Robert Peter Hellenbrand, age 93, of Waunakee, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2022 at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg. He was born on May 7, 1928 and was the first son of Margaret G. (née Clemens) and Frank X. Hellenbrand. He was born and raised on the farm and spent his entire life in Waunakee. He attended St. John’s Catholic School and was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Robert enjoyed so many simple things in life and he would let you know with a smile that could light up a room. Some of his favorite things included going to church picnics with his brother Frankie, lunches at the Waunakee Senior Center, ice cream, staying up late, and gummy bears. Robert also enjoyed a good game of Bingo and he never met an apple pie he didn’t like.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Henry (Bernard) Hellenbrand; and his sisters, Dorothy Gerstenkorn, Irene Renz, and Margaret (Margie) Hellenbrand.

Robert is survived by his sisters, Theresa Payne of Fitchburg, and Janet Beckerjeck of Waunakee. He is also survived by his brother, Francis (“Frankie”) Hellenbrand of Waunakee, and several nieces and nephews. Private funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb 4, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St John’s Catholic Church, 209 South St, Waunakee. Msgr. James Gunn will officiate. Michael Albert Hansen - December 23, 1950 - January 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: Michael (Mick/Mickey/Opa) Albert Hansen, 71, was released from his 12-year battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease on Sunday, January 16. His passing was ushered by his wife and soulmate of 49 years, his devoted younger sister, and the heroic staff at Bright Star Senior Living Waunakee (memory care) and Agrace Hospice Care.

Born on December 23rd of 1950, Mick was the third of four children of Albert and Lorraine (Fonk) Hansen of Racine. A 1969 graduate of J.I. Case High School, he later obtained bachelor’s degrees from UW River Falls (Science Education), Marquette University (Physical Therapy), and a master’s from Cardinal Stritch University (Health Administration). He was recognized in the community for his athletics: playing football, basketball, & baseball, and coaching his sons’ community basketball and baseball teams. Mick also championed the physical therapy vocation, and his lifetime of patients, with ownership and partnership of two Racine/Kenosha agencies (Racine Physical Therapy & Southport Rehab Associates Inc.).

Away from work Mick loved coaching, traveling (especially to Germany after he had taught himself to speak fluent German and with his penchant for WWII history), outdoor adventures in a kayak, on a bike, or on skis (especially in Door County), and anything that involved his family. His infectious and witty sense of humor was a hallmark of his personality and enriched (most of) his relationships. Home improvements and tasks involving a toolbox, however, were notoriously far from his abilities and patience…a source of many hilarious and treasured “Clark Griswold-like” moments.

Mick faced his terminal illness with strength, courage, grace, and even levity.  Not once did he complain or indulge in self-pity. Instead, for years he volunteered in clinical trials, cognitive testing, and medical procedures with the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center so that a cure or treatment would be available for future generations. Serious conversations were replaced with jokes, ping-pong, dancing, The Greatest Showman on continuous loop, and long walks. Mick never stopped rooting for the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Bucks, or fist-pumping/air-drumming to his favorites of Pitbull (yes, you read that correctly) and Willie Nelson.

Mick is survived by his high school sweetheart who he met in math class, Karla (Kolls); two sons, Wes (David) & Kevin (Gina); two grandchildren (Emma & Michael); and three siblings, Sandra, James (Donna), & Mary. In place of a traditional funeral his life will be honored in an intimate and immediate family celebration surrounded by nature and love. Obituary Preview: Delories Vosen, age 96, of Waunakee/Westport passed away at Homestead Living on Thurs., January 13, 2022. She was born on a farm in the Baraboo Bluffs near Devils Lake on September 23, 1925, to William and Emma (DuBois) Bradley. A life that began with kerosene lights, a windmill pump, and an outhouse ended with handheld computers and space tourism. Delories married Francis Vosen on June 6, 1953 and he preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2006. Together, they raised a family of three boys and one girl on a 40-acre farm near Waunakee. Her love of gardening, flowers, knitting, sewing, and quilting kept her busy year-round, along with volunteering at St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church and RSVP of Dane County and babysitting for many families over the years including grandkids. When Francis passed away, a wonderful group of friends and neighbors helped fill her days. These very special friends include, JoAnne Koster, Kay Beck, Marty Timmins, Joe CaPaul, and Mary Woodburn. They took Delories to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, band concerts, parades, and fish fries.

Delories is survived by her children, Patrick (Sandy) Vosen, Kevin (Terri Shaw-Graffin) Vosen, Steven (Ann) Vosen, and Sharon (Marc) Olson; her sisters, Rosemary Bradley, Agnes (Paul) Wendland, Shirley (Edmund) Essert; her brother, Don Bradley; her grandchildren, Sarah (Matt) Shiner, Ryan (Sandrea Batiste) Vosen, Erik (Danielle Malone) Vosen, Brett (Brooke Barnhart) Vosen, Maygan (Nate Fischer) Olson, and Sydney (Dylan Grover) Olson.  She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Elizabeth; and many in-laws. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Homestead Living and the nurses from Agrace Hospice that helped her on her journey.

Obituary Preview: Evelyn “Evie” M. Fleming passed away at Homestead Living, Waunakee, WI, on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022. Evelyn was born in Dane, Wisconsin, on May 30th, 1929, daughter of the late John and Theresa (Fell) Keller.

Evelyn graduated from Waunakee High School, class of 1947, and was a lifelong resident of the Waunakee community. Evie married Russell Fleming on July 2nd, 1955. She was the classic housewife, raising four children. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Evelyn enjoyed spending weekends with the family at their cottage on Buffalo Lake in Montello, playing cards, and relaxing. She spent all her time with the love of her life, her husband of 66 years, Russell. Russ preceded her in death a month earlier.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Rhonda; sons, Larry (Beth) Fleming, Jim (Michelle) Fleming, and Tim (Tammy Neises) Fleming; grandchildren, Randy and Ryan Reis, Scott, Dan, Kaitlyn, and Jack Fleming; sister, Shirley Panas; and brother, Donny (Nancy) Keller. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; brothers, Bob (Chris) Keller and Jack (Judy) Keller; brothers-in-law, Glenn (Doris) Gallup), Tom (Dottie) Fleming, Nick (Shirley) Panas; and brother-and-sister-in-law, Harry and Marge Beier.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 18, 2022, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church for Evelyn and Russell with Monsignor Gunn officiating. Obituary Preview: David P. Jenkins, age 72, of Middleton, WI passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at his home. He was born February 3, 1949, in Seymour, WI, the son of Charles Jenkins and Marjorie Prey. He married Mary Pertzborn on June 7, 1986 in Middleton.

David graduated as class valedictorian from Seymour High School in 1967. His school years included activities that reflect his love of the environment. He attended Trees for Tomorrow conservation camp and was a member of 4H. He participated in student council, covered sports for the high school newspaper, and won creative writing awards. After his junior year, David was chosen to attend the summer Journalism Institute at Northwestern University. He also attended Badger Boys State and was on the debate team. He was a member of the National Honor Society.

Dave attended the University of Wisconsin where he studied political science and economics. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1971. While at UW, he was a member of the Board of Directors of The Daily Cardinal and spent his summers working as a reporter for the Appleton Post Crescent. After receiving his BS, David attended Yale Law School, graduating in 1974 with a Juris Doctorate degree.

David began his legal career at Shellow & Shellow in Milwaukee, and then worked for the State of Wisconsin, Department of Workforce Development, Unemployment Insurance as both a department attorney and Administrative Law Judge until his retirement.

David loved to travel. His favorite destinations were in the West, where he would often backpack and hike. His travels always followed the routes of the railroads. He loved the mountains and national parks. He supported many environmental causes and volunteered many hours in support of conservation.  He enjoyed gardening, model railroading, photography, sudoku, cryptaquote, and crossword puzzles. He always enjoyed a good game of cards or backgammon.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary; his sister, Kathryn of NYC, NY; his aunt, Mary Buhler of Milwaukee; and cousins, Sharon Hinrichs, Carol Dwyer, Will Runnoe, Cindy Vianas, Mike Olson, Julie Buhler, and Heidi Sekowski.

He is further survived by his sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Laverne) Theis of Verona, Jean Kaminski of Fairborn, Ohio, Betty (Gary) Frey, and Judy (Dean) Kasten of Prairie du Sac. David also has nine nieces and nephews, Becky (Noel) Lambert, Scott (Marcy) Theis of Verona, Troy Theis (Jason Rush) of Madison, Ryan (Jenny) Theis of Muskego, Tara (Rick) Skurulsky of Denver, CO, Jennifer (Foster) Reif of Ohio, Laila (Court) Drescher, Shannon (Mike) Johnson of Prairie du Sac, and Kyle (Krista) Kasten of Evansville; and 22 great-nieces and great-nephews.

David is preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Robert and Florentina (Ballweg) Pertzborn.

Penny Lynn Ziegler, of Waunakee, passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at the age of 52. She was born in Madison on October 10, 1969, to Francis and Loretta (Kuehn) Ziegler.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Autumn Bartlett; her parents, Francis and Loretta Ziegler; her siblings, Jeff (Linda), Kevin (Nancy), Susan Sarac, and Rick; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews, and cousins. Clay Bartlett, the love of her life, passed away on August 1, 2017.

Penny would light up every room she walked into with her contagious laugh, beautiful smile, and warm heart. She was a kind and giving person who showed empathy to people like no other. She enjoyed being with family and friends whenever she could.

She had a passion for music (played the piano) and shared her faith in God with everyone. She was artistic, creative, and always loved animals.

Penny attended St. Mary of the Lake Church and School in Westport and Waunakee High School. She was an Orthodontist’s Assistant at Madison Family Dental for many years, and also worked at Hy-Vee and other jobs.

A private family ceremony with Monsignor James Gunn, will be held.

Louise Agnes Davidson - August 12, 1928 - January 07, 2022

Obituary Preview: MADISON - Louise A. (Brockman) Davidson, age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 7, 2022, surrounded by her loving family, at Avalon Assisted Living Community in Fitchburg, Wis.

Louise was born on August 12, 1928 to August and Agnes Brockman. She grew up in Wonewoc, Wis. and graduated from Wonewoc High School in 1946.

On December 27, 1947, she married the love of her life, Leonard Davidson, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wonewoc. They settled in Madison, Wis., raised three children and were blessed with 61 years of marriage.

For most of her life, Louise was a homemaker. After her kids were grown, she worked part-time for the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus housing, and retired in December of 1997.

Louise was best known for her cooking, baking and sewing talents. She made the best homemade pies and her sweet potato casserole was requested every Thanksgiving. She sewed her children’s Halloween costumes, her daughter’s dance recital costumes and wedding dress, and was the go-to “mender” of the family.

Louise adored her family and enjoyed her time spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a very present grandmother, never missing an event. From births, baptisms and recitals, to band concerts and school-programs, to birthday parties, graduations and weddings, she was there for it all. And when you called her, you’d be on the phone for an hour because she loved chatting and always had one more thing to say.

Louise is survived by her three children, Lynette (Ron) Byrnes of Waunakee; Larry (Jean) Davidson of Middleton; and Lon Davidson of Madison; four grandchildren, Patrick (Stephanie) Byrnes, Stephanie (Eric) Ohlfs, Katie Davidson-Paton, and Billy Davidson; five great-grandchildren, Riley and Logan Byrnes, Ethan and Levi Ohlfs, and Coen Paton; her sister, Dorothy Roth, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; parents, August and Agnes Brockman; in-laws, Earl and Anna Davidson; two brothers, Everette (Eleanor) and Edward (Betty) Brockman; sister, La Verne (Edgar) Kaske; brothers-in-law, Vernon Davidson and Orville Roth; sister-in law, Evelyn (Vernon) Hackbart;  and two infant grandchildren, Kelly Byrnes and Elena Davidson.

The family would like to thank Agrace HospiceCare and the Avalon Living Community for all of their attention and care given to our mother during this most difficult time.

A public visitation will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Winn- Cress Funeral  Home 5785 Hwy Q in Waunakee, Wis. Obituary Preview: Janet Ann Hoffman, 82, loving sister and aunt, daughter of Aloysius and Theresa Hoffman, passed away in the care of her family and Agrace Hospice on Sunday morning, January 2, 2022. She was born July 15, 1939, on the Hoffman home farm, west of Waunakee, and attended St. John’s Catholic School.

Janet lived the majority of her life on the farm with her mother. Forever young at heart, Janet always exuded a joy for life. She loved caring for all living things and was especially devoted to her family; eagerly willing to lend a hand working on the farm, planting in the garden, or caring for the animals. She was most particularly fond of children and brought so many smiles to so many. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her, especially her niece, Jessica Hoffman, and nephew, Preston Kelsey.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Aloysius and Theresa (Ballweg) Hoffman and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Jeff Davis and Roland Ripp. She is survived by three sisters, Mary Ripp of DeForest, Carolyn Davis-Hoffman of Madison, and Margaret (Alan) Kelsey of Waterloo; and four brothers, Steve (Kay) Hoffman of DeForest, Don (Mary) Hoffman of Waunakee, William ‘Bill’ (Julia) Hoffman of Columbus, and Leo (Lori) Hoffman of Waunakee; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary Ann O'Brien - March 12, 1933 - January 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: On January 1st, 2022, Mary Ann O’Brien, most recently of Waunakee, WI, and longtime resident of Dubuque, IA, passed peacefully in her sleep after living for many years with dementia.

Mary Ann was born Mary Ann Beecher on March 12, 1933, to her parents Mary and Michael Beecher.  Having grown up in Mason City, IA, Mary Ann graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, IA, as a Registered Nurse. She eventually worked as a nurse at Luther Manor Nursing Home in Dubuque for more than 20 years, including time as the Director of Nurses.

While attending Mercy School of Nursing, she met the love of her life and future husband, Ralph O’Brien. She and Ralph were married on September 8, 1956. Together they raised seven children and had a very full life together until Ralph’s passing on September 3, 2008.

Mary Ann is survived by her children and their spouses: Jerry and his wife Beth (Mutchler), Julie, Jim, Jill and her husband John Peck, Matt and his wife Kim (Rausch), Bob, Jane and her husband Jeff Skoug. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Caitlin and her husband Ben Konecny, Corey and his partner MacKenzie Cross, Emily and her partner Kat Arenella, Colin and his wife Bianca, Kylie and her husband Rob Landis, Jacob, Meghan, Ryan, and Joe; her great-grandchild, Lincoln O’Brien; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Maurna O’Brien, Mike (Joyce) O’Brien, Joe O’Brien, Terry O’Brien, Kathleen (Rex) Gogerty, Lois Schlegel, and Deb (Bob) Green.

She is preceded in death by her parents, father and mother-in-law, loving husband, six brothers-in-law (Earl, George, Pat and Steve O’Brien, Irwin McDermott and Rich Schlegel), five sisters-in-law (Elaine, Ann, Delores, and Monie O’Brien and Joannel McDermott), and two nephews (Phil McDermott and Tim O'Brien).

All her children and extended family have been graced by her constant demonstrations of unconditional love, her laughter, and her perpetually positive outlook on life.  Her commitment to her husband, children, and extended family will continue to serve as an example of a life well lived.

We truly wish we could have gathered with all our loved family and friends. A private funeral service was held due to COVID at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial followed the funeral mass on the grounds of St. John the Baptist Church. The mass can be viewed on the St. John's YouTube page starting Saturday, January 8, 2022.

Norbert served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He married Rosalie “Sis” Meier on Jan. 28, 1956 and they resided in Waunakee. Norbert was employed with the Dane County Hwy Dept. for 32 years. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Waunakee.

Obituary Preview: Waunakee – Margaret Watzke “Marge” (nee Sandley) age 101, passed away on 12-26-2021. Marge was born on August 29, 1920, in Browntown, Green County, WI, daughter of Frank and Millie (nee Devoe) Sandley. She was the third oldest of eight children. When she was four years old, the family moved to a farm near Cadott, Chippewa County, WI. She attended school there and sometimes skied to class across the fields in Winter. She was a caregiver for many mothers that gave birth at home. For entertainment there was dancing, skiing, and hall roller skating. Marge moved to Madison with a friend in 1940 to find work. She became a shirt finisher at a laundry and later earned her GED at Madison Technical College. She met Gerald “Jerry” and their first date was on his motorcycle. They married on October 24, 1942. They farmed North of Waunakee and raised two sons, Ronald & Brian. Marge was a member of Saint John’s Christian Mothers Society, Dane County Homemakers for 50 years, Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, volunteer at Waunakee Manor, and volunteer at Heritage School-Early Childhood Program. She was employed at Swiss Colony, Sun Prairie and later at Central Wisconsin Center as a nurse’s aide for over 18 years. Margaret became an accomplished acrylic painter and won blue ribbons at the Dane County Homemakers Convention. Jerry and Marge left the farm and moved to the Village of Waunakee in 1983 to a new home. Their pastimes included bowling, golfing, bingo, traveling to visit family, snowmobiling, bus trips from the Senior Center, boating, and fishing. They sometimes fished in Canada. They enjoyed their cruise to Alaska which also included train and bus tours. They also enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and the Bahamas. Jerry and Marge followed the Packers, Brewers and Badgers and attended many games.

Marge is survived by her two sons, Ronald (Susan) Watzke and Brian (Gina Interrante) Watzke; grandchildren, Lynnette (Chuck) Gillette, Phillip (Isabel) Watzke, Mark (Michele) Watzke, and Lisa (Darrin) Davis; great-grandchildren, Amy (Cory) Himes and Michael Gillette, Phillip Jr (Katelyn) Watzke, Justin Watzke, and Susan and Austin Davis; great-great-grandchildren, Hunter, Lucas, and Branden Watzke, and Greyson Himes. In addition, Marge is survived by a sister, Gloria McKeller; sister-in-law, Carol Sandley; and many nieces and nephews. Marge was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; sister, Charlotte; and brothers, Laverne, O’Dell, Ted, Harold, & Victor.

Marge would like to thank: Dottie, Lucille, Marion, Jan, Cookie, Nancy, Leona, Betty, and Tinker for being great friends throughout the years. Matthew Breunig - June 15, 1978 - December 13, 2021

Obituary Preview: Matthew “Matt”  Gerald Zander Breunig, age 43, of St. Paul, MN passed away on Monday, December 13, 2021, at Abbot Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.  He was born on June 15, 1978 in Waunakee, WI, the son of Gerald Breunig, (Debra) and Diane Zander (Steve).  He was engaged to Carly Cappel, also of St. Paul, MN.

Matthew graduated from Verona High School in Verona, WI.  He worked for Anytime Fitness, overseeing the operations of a handful of various clubs in Wisconsin and Minnesota during the past twelve years.  Matthew was an avid car enthusiast and was active in the St. Paul car community.  He enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, camping and bonfires.  He was a very good cook and thrived on grilling and smoking meats.  He enjoyed a special bond with their dog, Thunder.  Matthew excelled at making people smile, laugh and enjoy life and was always there to help anyone in need.

He was extremely proud of his two children, Kyler and Joella, and although geography kept them apart, he enjoyed every moment he could with them in person or online.

Matthew is survived by his fiancé Carly Cappel; children, Kyler Breunig and Joella Breunig; father, Gerald Breunig (Debra); mother, Diane Zander (Steve); siblings; Meghan Zufall, Mike Breunig (Casey), Heather Asbjornson (Jon), Heidi Kopps (Kevin); grandfather, Henry “Bud”  Zander; grandmother, Mary Breunig and grandfather; Don Dahmen; nieces & nephews, Sam, Audrey, Brooks, Cody, Nolan and Brynn; and many aunts and uncles, cousins and friends; in-laws, Kevin and Mary Cappel; brother- in- law, Nic Cappel (Knatashia); and nephews, Knox and Knight.

Kenneth J. Meier - June 12, 1931 - December 10, 2021

Obituary Preview: Dane:  Kenneth J. Meier, born June 12, 1931, peacefully departed this life on Friday, December 10, 2021. Kenneth (Kenny) the son of the late Hugo and Helen (Hellenbrand) Meier was born in Waunakee.

In his early childhood the Meier family moved from Waunakee to what was the family farm in Dane. It is here where Kenny shared his love of farming with his brothers James and Roman. He never missed time farming except an occasional vacation and when he was serving our country in the US Army.

Kenny stayed on the family farm until he was united in marriage to the late Marian J. Meier on March 9, 1985. They resided in the village of Dane. When Marian and Kenny married, she gave him an instant family that included Marian’s children, Teresa (Frank) Schoenbeck, James (Joan) Lord, and Terri (Leroy) Wipperfurth. They were also blessed with nine grandchildren, Ian (Nichole), Lucas (Jennifer), Christina, Cassandra (Nick), Katie (Tyler), Jessica, Richard (Rachel), Pamella (Jeremy), Nicolas and eleven great grandchildren. Kenneth is also survived by his siblings James (Bev) Meier, Lois Spahn, and Roman (Sandra) Meier; in-laws Patricia (Ronald) Alt, Charles (Helen) Funk, Kathleen Lins, Cheryl (Ronald) Statz, and Doris Mernack; and many nieces and nephews.

Kenny was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; her infant son, Richard; his parents, Hugo and Helen (Hellenbrand) Meier; parents-in-law, Charles Campbell and Lena (Keller) Funk, brothers William Meier and David Meier; brothers-in-law, Dale Funk and Dave Spahn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 15th at Blessed Trinity Catholic Parish, St. Michael Church, 109 S. Military Rd., Dane WI, 53529.  Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of Mass at the church.   A luncheon will follow the burial at Rex’s Innkeeper.  Memorials can be made to Blessed Trinity Parish, Lodi.

Russell R. Fleming - December 03, 1926 - December 09, 2021

Obituary Preview: Russell R. Fleming died on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg. Russell was born December 3, 1926, in Rock Island, Illinois to Russell V. Fleming and Marguerite Laedeke. He attended St. Bernard’s grade school and Madison East High School until enlisting the U.S. Navy in 1943. He graduated from the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, Tennessee and the Naval Arial Gunner’s School in Miami, Florida. He flew as an Aviation Radio Gunner in TBF/TBM Avenger Torpedo bombers off the U.S.S Bennington CV-20 until the end of WWII. He then obtained his high school diploma and attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison on the GI Bill. Later he went to California and graduated from the Western Radio and Television Institute in Los Angeles and passed his First-Class Radio Telegraph license from the FCC. He then sailed under contract with the U.S. Navy on navy tankers from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. He returned to Madison and married Evelyn M. Keller on July 2, 1955.

They raised four children, Larry K., Rhonda Rae, James R., and Timothy. Russell graduated from the very first class of Wisconsin State Patrol Academy in 1955 as a Trooper and advanced to Communications Supervisor, Deputy Chief of Inspection Services, Chief of Planning and Records, and in 1968, was appointed Deputy State Highway Coordinator in the office of Governor Warren Knowles and subsequently Patrick Lucey. Russell returned to the Department of Transportation as Deputy Chief of Safety and Law Enforcement. During this time, he attended the Northwestern Traffic Institute and the Indiana University Center for Police Training. He retired as Chief of Accident Records on January 8, 1988.

The following year, he returned to sea, relieving a Radio Office for vacation for 68 days on an ammunition ship at Diego Garcia, Chagos Archipelago, Indian Ocean. This ship eventually delivered its load of rockets and bombs to Desert Storm. Russ was an active radio amateur operator with the FCC call WB9NYG. While at Diego Garcia, he operated with the British call VQ9RF. He was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed hunting and fishing at his cottage on Buffalo Lake near Montello. The high spot in his working career was being elected by his peers to Chairman of the International Traffic Records Committee National Safety Council. He was Past Commander of Post 360 American Legion in Waunakee.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Glen Gallup and Thomas Lee; and sister, Marge (Harry Bier). He is survived his wife of 66 years, Evelyn; sister, Doris Gallup; sons, Larry, James, and Timothy; and daughter, Rhonda. He is further survived by grandchildren, Randy, Ryan, Scott, Dan, Katlyn, and Jack; and many grand-dogs whom he loved dearly.

William John Erickson - August 14, 1942 - December 08, 2021

Obituary Preview: Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, William (Bill) John Erickson, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 after a brief illness.  Bill was born to Maynard W. Erickson and Leona (Rosenfeldt) Erickson on August 14, 1942 in Marshfield, Wisconsin.  He received his education in Loyal graduating from Loyal High School in 1960 and two years later from Madison Business College after which he started employment with Struck and Irwin.  In 1966 he began his career at Demco retiring in 2004 as Vice President of Operations.   Bill has been a member of Waunakee Rotary since 1976 enjoying performing community services and camaraderie with the club and humanitarian work in Honduras and Haiti.  He’ll be remembered for his fun loving ways, his love for his family and friends, his “Mr. Fix-it” abilities, his love of boating and cottage on the river.

Bill married his high school sweetheart on November 9, 1963, Jeanette Elsinger Erickson who survives.  He is further survived by his daughters Jill (Robert) Neimon, Susan (Matt) Tapp, grandchildren Cassidy Steinberg, Gabrielle Steinberg, Amanda Neimon, Max Neimon and Will Neimon.

Funeral services will be held on Thurs. Dec 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St Mary of the Lake Catholic Church 5460 Mary Lake Rd Waunakee. Msgr. James Gunn will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9:30 until the time of services. A Reception will follow at Rex’s Innkeeper in Waunakee.

Susan Wilke - October 28, 1944 - December 02, 2021

Obituary Preview: Susan K. Wilke, age 77, passed away on December 2, 2021, at University Hospital. Sue was born in Chicago in 1944, the daughter of Louis and Jeanette Deters. She attended Mother McAuley High School and graduated from Edgewood College with a degree in Mathematics.

After arriving in Madison to go to college, she met Tom Wilke, and they married in 1966. They were married for 47 years before Tom's death in 2014. They were not only partners in marriage, but partners in business as well. Sue originally taught mathematics at Sherman Middle School but took a break to raise their two children. Tom soon needed help in his landscape design office. Sue volunteered and their company eventually became Landscape Partners, Inc. She managed the office while Tom designed the landscaping. Sue wanted a title at the company and chose CEO. She remained CEO even after her son, Joe, took over the business.

Sue loved planting all her flowers in the spring, and although she was a good cook, she would rather go out to eat which she and Tom did often. Both Sue and Tom were avid readers. Their house was filled with books, especially mysteries. She could often be found reading late at night, because she just had to finish that last chapter.

Sue is survived by her son, Joe (Sherry); Joe's children, Emily (Jon), Zach and Jacob; Sherry’s children, Alyassa (Logan) and their daughter Addie, Kaira (Tristan), and Brayden. She is further survived by her grandson, Thomas; great-grandson, Thomas Jr.; sisters, Carol (Tim) Hannemann, Nancy (Jim) Reyzer, and brother Bob (Barbara) Deters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, and her daughter, Molly.

Geralyn K. Murphy - July 26, 1954 - November 24, 2021

Obituary Preview: Geralyn “Geri” Kathleen (Kuehn) Murphy, 67, of Madison/Waunakee, died suddenly at University Hospital in Madison on November 24, 2021, with her husband at her side. She was born on July 26, 1954, in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of Bernard “Ben” and Catherine “Kay” (Wagner) Kuehn. She married Bradley J. Murphy in 1977.

Geri grew up in Waunakee, graduating from Waunakee High School in 1972.  After graduation she completed a one - year nursing program at Madison Area Technical School, now Madison College.  She continued her undergraduate studies until the time of her marriage. After their wedding in 1977, Brad and Geri moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where Brad enrolled in the Graduate School of Planning at the University of Tennessee. Geri put her education on hold and worked for two children’s dentists until Brad graduated in 1980. They relocated to Janesville, Wisconsin. In 1981, she received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and then continued her education completing a master’s degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1984.  She started working for the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics Authority shortly thereafter as the Director of Admissions. Geri assumed many additional responsibilities over her 32-year career, serving for a time as the Director of Access Services and retiring in 2016 as the Vice President of the Revenue Cycle.

In 1984, Brad and Geri moved to Madison with their two-year old son Christopher.  In 1985, their second son, Benjamin, was born. Geri contracted Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1986 and after six difficult months was cancer free.  During this time Geri missed very little work, going from radiotherapy in the early morning to her office.  She was forever grateful to the administration and Dr. Paul Carbone for their care and support.

Geri and Brad shared a wonderful life together. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and were looking forward to spending winters in warm weather.  Geri was passionate about her family, cooking and helping other people.  She was a wonderful wife, sister, mother and grandmother.  She was the strongest, kindest, most supportive person we know.

Geri is survived by her husband, Brad; sons, Christopher (and Pam) of Milwaukee, Benjamin (and Michelle) and their children Ava Elizabeth and Declan Bradley of Waunakee; sisters, Jean Kuehn (Jack Garver) of Madison, Anne Heilman (Paul) Inglis of Sydney, Australia; brothers, Gary Kuehn (Donna) of Waunakee, Terry Kuehn (Diane) of Madison, Lawton Heilman of Poynette; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kay and Ben Kuehn; and stepmother, Mary (Heilman) Kuehn.

We want to thank Geri’s primary care physician, Dr. Lorna Belsky, and the other doctors and staff at UW Hospital for the care provided over the years.

Obituary Preview: Marion K. Ballweg, age 98, of Waunakee, died on Monday, November 22, 2021, after a life well-lived. She was born in Middleton on August 17, 1923, to Joseph and Margaret (Laufenberg) Ziegler. Marion married Edward P. Ballweg on September 27, 1945. Ed and Marion were lifelong farmers until their retirement, at which time they moved to town. Mom was a little lady with a big heart who loved playing cards, bowling, watching the Brewers and basketball, and baking (especially cinnamon rolls). Mom treasured time with family and friends and her feline companion “Boots”. Mom was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Survivors include her children, Shirley (Fred) Ziegler, Sharon (Gary) Acker, and Rodney, all of Waunakee; her grandchildren, Tammy (Jerry) Reefe, Craig (Kristi) Ziegler, Shane (Bridget) Ziegler, Jenni (Paul) Janus, and Kurt (Lisa) Acker; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Troy Ziegler, Connor and Alainna Reefe, Kallie and Wyatt Ziegler, Addison and Hayden Janus, Preston Acker, Ashton and Camryn Krueger; great-great-granddaugher, Peyton Reefe; brother, Ed (Donna) Ziegler;brother and sisters-in-law, Marvin (Norma) Ballweg; Ruth Ziegler and many other relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: Judine M. Wood, age 82, of Dane, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully, with her rosary in hand, on Nov. 20, 2021. She was born on Nov. 25, 1938, to John and Margaret (Karls) Statz and spent most of her life in Dane, WI. While she had many administrative jobs over the years, including working for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, the Stark Company, and in the Hayden, CO school district, she spent over 25 years at American Breeder Service (ABS). She was a fantastic cook and baker. She provided home cooked meals and treats for those in need or for those who simply craved her cooking. Judine was known for her patience, love, and guidance to the large Statz family tree and others who needed her help. She was a mom to all. What a wonderful legacy of love and kindness she leaves behind.

She was united in marriage to Albert W. Wood on Aug 23, 1979 and cherished her time with Bill until his death.  Judine is survived by her children, Michael (Sonya) Theis, and Jean (John) Steele; grandchildren, Ryan (Carrie) Theis, Sarah Hoffman, Margaret Steele, Ian Steele, Megan (Jeb) Simmons, Stacy (Trent) Simmons; and great-grandchildren, Maryah and Ryker Theis, Penelope and Simon Hoffman, Te’Hiva, Auhea, Nava, Harlo and Grey Simmons.

Judine was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Albert and Signe Wood; and her siblings and in-laws, Elaine (Leonard) Ziegler, Betty (Joseph) Endres, Hilary (Celine), Philip (Irene), David (Darlene), and Sylvester Statz; and her former husband, Leroy J. Theis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Waunakee, WI on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Dane, WI. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass. William "Bill" Schmale - October 05, 1929 - November 16, 2021

Obituary Preview: William “Bill” Schmale died on Tues Nov. 16, 2021, at a Madison hospital. Bill was born on Oct 5, 1929, in Madison to Melvin and Loretta (Bartow) Schmale. He married Evelyn Taylor on May 23, 1953, in Dubuque, Iowa.

He was a plumber for 65 years and the Plumbing Inspector for the Town of Westport for 50 years.

He ski-jumped in his youth and loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed spending weekends at their trailer in Lynxville for many years. In recent years he liked to take trips to the casino.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; a daughter, Lynn (Chuck) Valliere; a son, Gary; sister-in-law, Sandy Taylor; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard.

Werner A. "Wernie" Roth - April 25, 1931 - November 16, 2021

Obituary Preview: Werner A. Roth, age 90, of Springfield Corners passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at UW Hospital in Madison surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 25, 1931 in Sauk City, Wisconsin to Alois and Helena (Seiler) Roth. On June 21, 1960 he married Mildred (Ballweg) in Roxbury.

Werner attended elementary school in Sauk City and earned his GED while he was in the Army. He proudly served in Korea for two years during the Korean War where he was a heavy equipment operator. One of his favorite stories to share from his time in Korea was when he was asked by a small village to clear an area with his bulldozer to build a school. He was rewarded with a pan of brownies which he happily accepted. For 44 years he worked at Oscar Mayer Foods in Madison starting out as a meat cutter and doing various other jobs within the factory, ending his career in 1996 in the Lunchables department. In 2015 he enjoyed a trip on the Badger Honor Flight to Washington DC with his son, Mike.

He easily made friends wherever he went and was liked by everyone. He was an avid gardener and had the best-fed birds in the neighborhood. He and Millie enjoyed bowling, dining out, playing cards with their friends and traveling, including trips to Germany, Canada and various places throughout the United States. Werner also loved fishing and often took his children to a local fishing hole. Other things he enjoyed doing were jigsaw puzzles, reading the daily newspaper, reading Louis L’Amour novels, playing handheld poker, indulging his sweet tooth, and most of all he loved spending time with his family. When he got control of the remote, you could be sure a Western would be his choice. Gunsmoke was on the TV when he took his last breath.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a devoted member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Martinsville where he served as council president and later enjoyed mowing the church grounds.

Werner is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Millie, his children Mike (Helen), Kevin (Jennifer), Bonnie (Dennis) Dohm, Dale (Michelle), Kris (Rob) Ulfig, and Jennifer (Mark) Niesen; grandchildren, Whitney and Matthew Roth, Michael (Ashley) Schmidt, Mikaela and Brianna Roth, Emily and Nick Ulfig, Valerie and Megan Niesen. He is further survived by his siblings, Bobby, Eddie, Ann Statz, Gerald (Scherrie), sister-in-law Nancy, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alois and Helena, brothers Allie (Phyllis), John, Mattie (Antoinette), Anthony, Ervin, Elmer, Florian, sister Mary (Victor) Breunig, brothers-in-law Ebbie Statz and son-in-law Mark Schmidt; and sisters-in-law Donna and Deanna.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at 11 a.m. at ST. MARTIN'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5959 St. Martin Circle. Msgr. James Gunn will officiate. Friends may call on Monday, November 22, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the WINN-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 5785 Highway Q, Waunakee. Friends may also call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. A reception will follow at Rex's Innkeeper, Waunakee.

Obituary Preview: James “Jim” O. Ballweg passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 13, 2021.  Jim was born on November 29th, 1940, in Waunakee, WI to Norbert and Irene (Keichinger) Ballweg and was one of 11 children.

Jim entered the Army on June 15, 1960 and was ultimately stationed in Germany working as a radio operator.

He married Mary Catherine Taylor on October 24, 1964. They started their family in Madison then moved to a home they built near the family farm in Waunakee in 1977. They were blessed with four children.

Jim worked for Wisconsin Bell for approximately 30 years, starting as a Lineman and eventually as a Manager of Distribution Services.

Jim married Betty Engel on April 13, 1991, and moved to Leesburg, FL in July 1996. Jim and Betty enjoyed playing in their bocce ball league and traveling.

Jim was an avid softball player, playing for the Hofbrau House and Springfield Inn in WI and Highland Lakes in FL. He also enjoyed bowling in both WI and FL and was a member of the American Legion Post 0219 in FL, fourth degree Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of the Pioneers of America AT&T, and member of the K of C Clowns in WI. He was a long-time member of St. John the Baptist Church in Waunakee prior to moving to FL where he became a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Leesburg, FL. In his retirement, Jim thoroughly enjoyed his work at Rural King in Leesburg, FL.

Jim made friends wherever he went with his quick wit, easy smile, and kind heart. He was coined as “Gentleman Jim” in his early years and was a gentle giant at 6’4” tall.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mary; son, Steve; siblings, Daniel, Raphael, Florine Ring, Sylvia Bernards, Carol Murray, Norbert Jr., and Peter.

Jim is survived by his wife of 30 years, Betty; daughters, Kathy (Mike) Elvert, Julie (Jim) Brown, Sue (Todd) Duhr; and grandchildren, Elizabeth, James, Tyler and Alyssa. He is also survived by stepchildren, Bill (Ellie) Wilson, Gail (Dave) Zarro, and Tim (Linn) Wilson; and several step-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Dec 10, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at St John’s Catholic Church, 209 South St Waunakee. Msgr. James Gunn will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9:30 until the time of services. The service will be livestreamed at www.stjb.org. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
