Kalju was born March 5, 1941 in Nomme, Estonia. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1949 after living through WWII in eastern Europe and the postwar D.P. camps in Germany (like so many refugees from European countries at this post-WWII time). In Minneapolis, he grew up in a culturally rich diaspora of Estonians, where the language used at home was Estonian. Learning other languages, such as German, Russian and Latin in school was important. Violin study came at a young age, later piano, which he would practice for many hours. The interests and jobs that Kalju took on in his life were numerous and varied. When younger, he was a draftsman, art student at the U of M, practiced the craft of writing, studied Finnish, German and linguistics. He worked on towboats tying off barges for a year, as a dairy farmer in Wisconsin, millwright at Silver Bay, stockbroker in Oregon; and, lastly as a research technician for Seagate Technology (working nights in order to be able to lobby on behalf of the IHRC and the Anderson Library building project 1996). A life-long student, in large-part autodidact, he amassed a sizable library of books, in his words: “that will at some points in the future take over my housing.” European history, world geography, languages, linguistics, art and music were major interests. He was a great story teller. Community service/interests included: President of the Friends of IHRC; Co-chair, ABTA; Baltic Caucus; former member of the Governing Commission of Eastern Europe (under Gov. Rudy Perpich). For many years he participated in the Latvian Lutheran Church and choir along with his wife. He was also very involved in the Estonian Lutheran Church and Community. On March 20, 2021, Kalju took the Chrismation name “Christopher” in the Orthodox Church. He very much enjoyed attending Divine Liturgies at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church, Minneapolis. Lastly, Kalju was a loving and patient step-grandfather. He devoted many long hours caring for and playing tactical/building games with them as they grew up, always making himself available for outings benefitting family and children’s activities. He loved his big dogs–the larger the better. We will always remember Kalju most for his kind, gentle and thoughtful nature. Our most heartfelt thanks to all who helped us in this journey, especially to staff and physicians at Minnesota Urology, Minnesota Oncology, Mercy Hospital, Benedictine Living Community and Allina Hospice. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at held at 9:30AM on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church, 3450 Irving Ave S. Minneapolis. Visitation will begin at 6PM on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at Willwerschied Funeral Home, 1167 Grand Ave Saint Paul, followed by Trisagion at 7PM. James Harold Huff - December 10, 1933 - February 21, 2024

Departed: 02/21/2024 (Saint Paul)
Obituary Preview: James Harold Huff, 90, peacefully passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at Carondelet Village, in St. Paul Minnesota.
FAMILY: Jim was born to Harold and Isabel Huff in Salem, Illinois, December 10, 1933. He was their second child following the death of a seven-year-old sister, Bobbi Lou, in 1932 who died from diphtheria. A younger sister, Rosemary came into the family a few years later. She and her husband Virgil had two children, Jim’s niece and nephew, Cheryl and Greg.
EARLY YEARS: Jim left a short auto biography that describes growing up on a small farm of 60 acres raising vegetables, as well as, sheep, cows, pigs and chickens. They lived in a small house in rural Salem, IL His Mother raised the children and enjoyed quilt-making and embroidering. His Father was both a farmer and a contractor who built houses, sheds, and barns. During the depression they didn’t have much money but plenty of food. In Salem, he attended first, second and third grade in a one room schoolhouse. When World War II broke out, all the building supplies available went to the war effort. His Dad was without work. They moved to Sullivan IL where his Dad found work as an electrician at Block Engineering and was later promoted to plant engineer. Jim finished grade school and attended high school in Sullivan IL.
COLLEGE YEARS: Jim attended college in Carbondale IL in the early ‘50’s with a specialty in science. Jim explains that he was a fairly good student because he needed a B average to avoid being drafted into the Korean Conflict. He applied for Student Work on campus and was assigned to supervise the “Girls Dormitory.” Jim describes how much he enjoy this assignment – work with the “girls”! Yes, Jim’s humor.
After college during the mid-1950’s, Uncle Sam still needed soldiers so he was recruited for security purposes to protect the country. Jim had “great scores” in science as he loved learning about plants, animals, and the universe. Jim had a sense of detail and a quiet, kind demeanor so was recruited to register and process new soldiers. He served as Quartermaster in Fort Carson, Colorado. Later he was sent to Alaska and worked in finance as the paymaster making sure all the soldiers received their spending money. After one and a half years in Alaska, Jim describes how they told him “the country loves you very much so we grant you a ‘good conduct recommendation’ and suggest that you ‘beat it.’ As a good soldier I obeyed and returned to Illinois.” Jim had a sense of humor.
WORKING YEARS: From 1958 to 1965, Jim taught seventh and eighth grade science and social studies in Mason City while he attended summer graduate courses receiving a Masters in Administration at Southern Illinois State University. He found a new teaching job in the Kankakee IL School district that lasted until his retirement 25 years later. He initially taught sixth grade, became assistant principal, and eventually principal of Mark Twain Elementary School for almost twenty years. He spent recess and lunch hour on the playground getting to know the students. He loved to bring his telescope to the school parking lot at night and look at the heavens; he invited the children and their parents to enjoy the night visions as well! He was a quiet and organized leader who loved the children. The faculty loved Jim and dearly missed him when he retired in 1989 at the state required age of 55.
LOVE LIFE! In the Fall of 1970, Susan Margaret Berres from St. Paul, MN, arrived at his school as the new School Counselor. He fell in love that Fall. By Thanksgiving, he traveled to Minnesota with Sue to meet her family of eight and by Christmas they were ready to be married the day after. For 44 years until Sue’s passing in 2015, they enjoyed their lives together first in Kankakee for twenty years (raising many types of plants, as well as dozens of fish, an iguana, and Lhasa apsa.) He had a basement full of beer making equipment and wall full of a collection of beer cans! He then retired to Hot Springs AR and after seventeen years due to health reasons, spent another fifteen years settling in St. Paul MN.
RETIREMENT: In 1989 Jim and his wife, Sue, moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Together they enjoyed life in a lovely home on Lake Hamilton touring the lake and its bays on the pontoon and often in their kayaks. Jim had a large rose garden, fruit trees (he even tried a banana tree); he harvested his own impatiens seeds to have gardens full of red flowers. They served at St. Mary’s Church, as well as, the Mid-America Science Museum where they regularly volunteered giving tours for school groups explaining the wonders of the universe, animals, and plants. For their volunteer service, Jim and Sue were honored with the Presidents’ Lifetime Award and the Governor’s Volunteers Excellence. After 4000 hours as volunteers, they received the United States Service and Civic Participation Award.
AGING: Jim gradually developed myasthenia gravis, a disease of the nervous system and became blind while Sue had increasing problems from diabetes. In 2007, they moved to St Paul for care. They found an Independent Living and eventually Assisted Living apartments as they needed more medical attention at a Presbyterian Home. Sue passed in 2015 leaving Jim alone at Timber Hills Home for another three years. Needing more help, he transferred to the Care Center of another Presbyterian Home, Carondelet Village, with the Sisters of St. Joseph where he lived until his passing in 2024.
JIM: Jim loved science: plants, animals, and the universe. His plants filled each of his homes; animals resided in fish tanks, gerbil cages and a glass house for the iguana. He made rockets to shoot off into the skies. Jim loved making (and drinking) his beer. Jim was a kind, unassuming man, always thoughtful and grateful. Sue was very creative, outgoing and energetic. In his quiet way, he was always there to support her. At the nursing home he often would say to the staff: “Don’t worry about me. Go look after her…” When he came back from dinner, he would say to the staff, “Now you go and have your own dinner. We will be okay here.” In his room of six years, Jim quietly slept into his eternal reward.
Jim is now our ‘saint’ in heaven – the ever kind, thoughtful, quiet man of love.
Preceded in death by parents, Harold and Isabel Huff; late wife, Sue (Berres) Huff. Survived by niece Cheryl Amoruso and nephew Greg Moore of Houston, TX; in-laws, Caroline Berres, OSC, Paul (Edna) Berres, Annette Malone, Charlotte Berres, CSJ. Born on March 22, 1946, in Amery, Wisconsin, Judy was the cherished daughter of parents Ray and Doris Miller. Judy embodied a carefree and joyful spirit throughout her life, cherishing friends, the pleasure of reading, beautiful lighthouses, the excitement of travel and sporting events with her family and taking every opportunity for a family picture.
Judy shared 56 beautiful years of marriage with her true love and devoted husband, Gary. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for each other. As a mother, Judy's love knew no bounds. She poured her heart and soul into nurturing and guiding her children, instilling in them the values of kindness, integrity, and faith. Her devotion to her family was unmatched, and her presence will be deeply missed by everyone who had the honor of being loved by her.
Judy's faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of her life. She found solace and strength in her relationship with the Lord, and her devotion inspired all who knew her. She embodied the definition of a servant's heart, giving to all without regard for her own sacrifices.

Helen Huset Swanson - May 16, 1929 - February 03, 2024

Departed: 02/03/2024 (Saint Paul)
Obituary Preview: Helen Huset Swanson passed away peacefully at the age of 94 surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Vancouver Barracks, WA, the fourth child of Elmer A. Huset and Mabel Rood Huset. Helen is preceded in death by her parents and her older siblings, Kathryn Lundy, Elmer “Bud” Huset, and Louis Huset. She is survived by her husband, Burt Swanson; her children Steven (Mary) Swanson, Kathryn (Clark) Zard, Paul Swanson, Timothy (Theresa) Swanson, Patrick (Nina) Swanson, and Kari (Scott) Anderson; and her 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Helen grew up in the Twin Cities, living first in Columbia Heights, where her father was the Pastor of First Lutheran Church, and later in South Minneapolis where she attended Roosevelt High School. Her mother passed away when Helen was 14. She then moved to live with her sister’s family in California. After graduating from Burlingame High School in 1947, she moved back to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota.
During her course work in the School of Business, she met Burt and knew that she had found the love of her life. They married in September of 1950 after Burt graduated. On the day of their wedding, Burt received his orders to report for active-duty service in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. Helen stayed in Minneapolis and completed her degree in Business Education then worked as a high school business teacher. Soon she traveled to Japan where Burt was stationed, and they began their 73-year marriage together.
After their return to Minneapolis, Burt used the GI Bill to enroll in the University of Minnesota Law School. In the spring of 1953, they began their family, and Helen stayed home to raise her children. She was a remarkable homemaker and fully supported Burt’s legal career. They were equal partners in the ambitious endeavor of raising six children born over 17 years.
Helen was proud of her Norwegian heritage and embedded many of those customs into the family holidays and everyday life. She valued hard work, education, humility, grace, and generosity. She generously shared her talents to support her family’s education and activities, their church and community, and many charitable organizations.
Burt and Helen were very social, spending time with relatives, lifelong friends, old neighbors, and anyone willing to play bridge. They traveled extensively and enjoyed long outdoor walks, downhill skiing, and family vacations at the northern lakes. During their retirement, they enjoyed golf and friends at Somerset Country Club and winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. Favorite moments came during family visits with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Helen was protective of her children, celebrating their successes and supporting them during difficult times. Helen would often say, “How lucky are we?” Over the last few years as her health declined and dementia progressed, she was robbed of the ability to tell her own story. Our family is grateful for the care and support she received from Brighton Hospice and Lexington Pointe Memory Care. She is now at peace…and we will share her story with the next generation.
