Daniel E. McGee - August 22, 1963 - April 21, 2020

Departed: 04/21/2020 (Upton)
Obituary Preview: Daniel “Ruggy” McGee, 56, of Upton, died in his home surrounded by his loving family on April 21, 2020. Born in Marlborough, on August 22, 1963, Danny was raised in Westboro, and graduated from Assabet Valley Technical HS in 1981. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and dear friend to many. He is survived by his wife Tammy McGee, and daughters Tanya and Nina McGee of Upton.
Danny owned and operated Side Alley Restoration in Westboro for nearly 35 years. He was a highly respected, and internationally recognized master of classic car restoration and finishing, and a true artist in every sense of the word. His work was featured in countless enthusiast’s magazines and blogs, and his customer’s proudly displayed their showpiece vehicles at car shows all across the country.
As gifted as Danny was in the shop, he had even greater gifts and talent in his career as a musician. His musical career started at a young age in the late 70’s and continued to blossom until his passing. He played in countless bands over the years including The Choosy Mothers, The Rugburns, Hothouse, Popskull and for the past 25+ years in Thinner with his dear friends Neil Lucey and Craig Wilson. Danny was a special artist with an often uncanny approach to his playing that always checked off all of the “unique” boxes that made him an original like no other. He had instincts that were equal parts amazing and unorthodox, but always Ruggy.
Perhaps Danny’s greatest gift of all was his ability to be the coolest person in the room, while simultaneously being the sweetest, most loving, kind, and humble person you’ve ever known. And, he did all of this wearing black clothes and sunglasses everyday, and every night. Danny was cool, he was fun, he was loved by everyone that knew him and he didn’t take any of that, or any of us, for granted. He was a one of a kind that lived life on his terms, a life that the rest of us should aspire to live. Danny always sang “leave the light on til I get home”, may his light shine in our hearts and minds forever, until we meet again, rest in peace Ruggy!
A Celebration of Danny’s Life will be announced at a later date.

Camil A. Brochu - October 12, 1923 - April 18, 2020

Departed: 04/18/2020 (Upton)
Obituary Preview: Camil A. Brochu, 96, a longtime Upton resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2020, at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Northbridge.  He was the beloved husband of the late Theresa Y. (Fontaine) Brochu for 57 years.
Born in Hardwick, VT, Camil was a son of the late Ernest and Mary “Marie” (Couture) Brochu.  Camil was raised and educated in East Hardwick, VT, and enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry in 1945.  He served on various military bases, including being stationed in Guam and the Philippines.  He was promoted to Corporal in 1946.  Upon his discharge, he moved to Massachusetts in 1949, where his first job was chopping wood with his brother Roland.  Camil later joined the Massachusetts Laborers Union Local 609, for which he worked for more than 35 years until his retirement.  Prior to his death, he was proud of his distinction for being the oldest current card carrying member of Local 609 and obtaining his 60-year service pin.
Besides spending enjoyable leisure time and hunting at his camp that he built with his brother Phil in Reading, VT, Camil’s passions included articulate stonework, antique bottle collecting, toadstool painting, and gardening.  He most especially enjoyed working on the yard and stunning flowerbeds at his 122 High Street home in Upton.  Countless individuals viewed Camil’s meticulous stonework and landscaping.  Many people remember and still discuss today, the fantastic Christmas light display he designed in his yard that brightened the winter season for years.  Often, people would stop to admire his labor of love, as well as provide him with small gifts at Christmas just to say thank you for the uplifting view he provided.  During warmer days, his yard was used as a backdrop for formal pictures as couples celebrated their wedding day.
As a master stonemason, Camil’s artistry will grace for centuries many homes and properties throughout Upton and Worcester County.  This includes the stonework entrance to Fieldstone Estates in Upton and most of the Welcome to Upton signs.
Camil also left his indelible mark as masterful painter of scenes on tree-grown toadstools.  His self-taught talent was known to craftspeople throughout New England.  It was said that if you were fortunate to own a Camil Brochu Toadstool Painting, that was something special.
The Town of Upton and his church, the former Holy Angels Church and Saint Gabriel the Archangel Church, were very meaningful to Camil.  Years ago, he volunteered his time, along with others, on the chicken barbeques and field day that Holy Angels annually hosted at the VFW.  He was a major part of the annual skating party the church sponsored on Pratt Pond.  Whether cooking hundreds of hot dogs or snow blowing the ice for all to enjoy, he wanted to make sure everything was perfect.  By trimming back all the bushes and mowing around the pond, Camil tried to ensure families could enjoy the ice in the winter as well as making sure youngsters could fish safely in the summer.  Camil thoroughly enjoyed looking down to the pond from his home and seeing the rewards of his efforts.
The time Camil spent with family and friends was most cherished.  He relished being surrounded by family, whether making the long trips to Vermont for sugaring or family gatherings, or attending many family events in the Blackstone Valley.  In 2014, more than 250 family and friends help celebrate his 90th birthday at his son’s home.  Camil possessed an innate ability to bring a smile to the face of anyone he met.  Those who knew him will always have special memories and lasting impressions.
Camil is survived by his two sons, James A. Brochu and his wife Lisa, of Upton, and Robert C. Brochu and his wife Sandy, of Whitinsville; three grandchildren, Lindsey Brochu, Daniel Brochu and Ryan Brochu, and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters Alexandra, Lorenzo, Anne Marie, Gilberte, Roland, Lucille, Juliette, Adrien, Philip, Raymond, and Bernard.
Due to the current restrictions on public gatherings, calling hours and his funeral Mass will be held at a future date and will be announced.
The Brochu family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the entire staff at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Northbridge for the exceptional care and compassion that Camil received while he was there.  The Brochu family especially thanks Anna, the Nurse Manager on Camil’s first-floor unit, for her personal care and continued communication with the family, and Amy, his nurse in his final hours who did not leave his side and played music for him until the end.  The Brochu family is eternally grateful.

Richard A. Amato - May 14, 1934 - November 14, 2019

Departed: 11/14/2019 (Upton)
Obituary Preview: Richard Andrew Amato, 85, a longtime Upton resident, died at his home on Thursday, November 14, 2019, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Amato was born in the depression era in Cambridge, MA, the son of the late Joseph and Doris (Straw) Amato. Early childhood years in Medford and East Lexington preceded a family move to Brattleboro, Vermont in 1946. Richard graduated Brattleboro Union High School and subsequently attended college in the ROTC program at the University of Vermont where he graduated with a liberal arts degree in June, 1958. While in Burlington at UVM, Richard met the love of his life, Cynthia (Perry) Amato of Holden, MA.  They were married in September, 1957.
The Air Force sent Richard with his young family to Japan for several years. During that time, he traveled to many military installations in the Asia Pacific region and proudly summited Mt Fuji during his stay.  After military service, the family returned to Massachusetts where Richard was employed as a mechanical engineer at several companies including EG&G, Draper Corporation, Crompton & Knowles, and Morgan Construction. While employed full-time and taking night classes, he earned his Masters degree in Physics from Northeastern University in 1970.
In the early 1970's, his daily commute from Bolton to Hopedale took him past the Temple Farm on East Street in Upton and his future was set in motion. In 1975, Richard and Cynthia purchased the 140-acre  farm including the run-down farmhouse and barn.  Farming and home renovations were Richard's "hobbies" for many years. Farming was a family endeavor involving many friends and relatives laboring in the fields and farmers' markets. In 1986, Richard retired from engineering to join his oldest son, Mark, full-time as a farmer. The Amato Farm grew many crops and was well-known for pick-your-own strawberries, the annual Harvest Celebration, and cut-your-own Christmas trees.  Over the years, Richard and Cynthia fixed up the old farmhouse into a warm and welcoming family home.  The Amato Farm ceased operation in 2003, the same year Cynthia passed away.
Richard was always interested in history: that of his family, his community, and his country.  He authored a treasured book of family history which required years of research and studying Italian history and language. He was proud to be an Italian citizen and traveled to Italy with Cynthia in search of his family heritage. Richard volunteered regularly at the Upton Historical Society and enjoyed learning local history, especially that of the Rockwood Farm, which would become the Amato Farm some 200 years hence.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 46 years, Cynthia (Perry) Amato, his sister, Mary (Amato) Leone of New Paltz, NY, and his son-in-law, Mark Sylvester of Hopkinton.  Survivors include his sister, Diana (Amato) Craven and her husband, Steven of Greer, SC; his children: Mark and his partner, Robin Boylen, of Hopkinton; Joe and his wife, Suzanne, of San Francisco; and Elizabeth Sylvester, also of Hopkinton.  He also leaves five grandchildren: Andrew Amato and his fiancé, Christina Lombardi; Alyson (Amato) Dixon and her husband Brooks; Alex Amato, Evan Amato, Napoleon Sylvester, and one great-grandson, Parker Amato.
His memory will live on in our hearts forever.
Calling hours are from 4 to 7 P.M. on Friday, November 29, in the Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, Inc. 45 Main St. Upton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, November 30, at the United Parish of Upton Church, 1 Church St. Upton.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Upton.
