Starr Boggs - Unknown - March 01, 2022

Departed: 03/01/2022 (Onancock)
Obituary Preview: Ralph Starr Boggs was born November 9, 1951, to Ralph and Betty Boggs and grew up on a family farm in Onancock, Virginia.  His grandmother, Reaston Boggs, taught him to cook and to appreciate the quality of fresh, local ingredients.  Starr is survived by his brother, Joe Boggs and his wife Kathy, of Onancock; a sister, Dell, of Newport News, Virginia; three nephews and a niece, Ryan Boggs, Russell Bundick, Tucker Boggs, and Brooke Martin; and seven great-nieces.
A superb athlete - he was 6-foot-4 and more than 250 pounds - and an honors student, Boggs attended the prestigious College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he played football on a team coached by Lou Holtz, who would go on to national fame at Notre Dame.
It was in Williamsburg that a girlfriend got him interested in restaurants, and he took a job in the kitchen of the historic Williamsburg Inn.  After college, he stayed with the restaurant industry and worked for several years at upscale restaurants in West Palm Beach before spending a season on Nantucket.
Friends said that in addition to his mastery of food and the restaurant industry, Boggs was also a superb golfer who traveled to play courses around the country with a clutch of local friends.  He also loved fishing, boating and music.
His longtime friend Tony Catanzaro said that people gravitated to Boggs’ orbit, lining up to help him with whatever he had put his mind to and that he quickly would return the generosity of spirit.  He continued that Boggs’ death would leave a gaping hole in the lives of many Westhamptonites on Long Island, where Starr Boggs restaurant operated for 40 years. “He was so real, no pretense, no bull.  He was just genuine, and he was a flawless judge of character and his group of friends.  We took care of Starr, and he took care of us,” Catanzaro said.  “People loved helping him. It was uncanny. Everybody loved him. I’ve lost my best friend.”
Services on the Eastern Shore are pending and will be announced by Williams-Onancock Funeral Home, www.williamsfuneralhomes.com.

A daughter of John and Georgia Roark of Altavista, Virginia, Ann graduated from Randolph Macon Woman's College.  She moved to Charlottesville, Virginia where she met Fred Dassler of Richmond, just prior to his graduation from the School of Engineering at UVA.  In 1962, they married eight months after meeting each other. Her family grew from late 1963 through 1971, with births of four sons:  Alan Frederick, Christopher Lee, Jonathan Craig, and Carl Matthew.  As a dedicated wife and mother, she instilled in her sons the essence of her character, as a Spirit Filled Christian to follow Christian ethics, practices, a daily discipline of Bible reading, and to honor and give thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  She spent countless hours in prayer for her family, all our family friends, our leaders, and those who toil as missionaries.
Her cheerful and optimistic charisma is remembered by all who experienced her open and forthright forgiving nature.  She leaves behind a large host of friendships and prayer partners, and viewed herself as one of God’s prayer warriors.
She is survived by her husband Fred; their four sons and wives, with each couple having a son and daughter comprising Ann’s eight grandchildren.  She leaves her extended family members in Altavista, Lynchburg, Virginia Beach, Richmond, and Waynesboro, Virginia.

Dr. Patrick Bruce McNeil Gray - July 20, 1927 - February 05, 2022

Departed: 02/05/2022 (Onancock)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Patrick Bruce McNeil Gray, 94, husband of the late Dora Mary Wilson Gray and a resident of Pungoteague, Virginia passed away Saturday February 5, 2022 at his beloved home on the water surrounded by his children and dear friends. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland on July 20, 1927 to the late Dr. James Smith McLean Gray and Margaret Macmurrich Gray. Dr. Gray is survived by his four children, Simon Gray of Wooster, Ohio, Nicholas Gray of Ellicott City, Maryland, Jennifer LaRuffa of Chesterfield, Virginia, and Christopher Gray of Winchester, Virginia, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Great!”. He was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Pungoteague, Virginia.
Dr. Gray received his medical degree in Psychiatry from Glasgow University in Scotland and devoted his career to treating mental illness. After moving to the United States, he practiced medicine in Williamsburg and Philadelphia before settling in the Winchester, Virginia area. He had a private practice for over 40 years in Winchester and treated patients at Winchester Memorial Hospital. In 1972, he and Dora moved to Willowbrook Farm in Mountain Falls, Virginia where in his “spare” time he put in a large vegetable garden, had a milk cow and chickens, and raised hogs and beef cattle. In 1993, he and Dora moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, a place they fell in love with while on fishing vacations, settling at Creekside in Pungoteague. He continued in private practice and saw patients at Shore Memorial Hospital. He became Medical Director of the Community Services Board in Parksley in 1996 and retired in 2006. The standards he set for himself were high, and he expected those around him to aspire to those same standards. He was a man of few words, but those words were well-chosen and conveyed his integrity, earning him respect from those who knew and worked with him. He had a dry humor and quick wit that would emerge most unexpectedly.
He was filled with curiosity and read widely. He took his family on weekend “Ripoff Tours” including trips to collect fossils, go down a coal mine, and see the radio telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia. He loved gardening and looked forward every spring to the arrival of many seed catalogues. Each would be read cover-to-cover several times before deciding which seeds he would plant in that year’s vegetable and flower gardens. He took quiet pleasure in “puttering about” and greatly enjoyed feeding the birds. He had a platform put up at the water’s edge for an Osprey nest. A pair returned each year, and we all received regular updates on the status of the eggs and then the chicks. Love of rural living was a theme of his life that gave his children happy memories and important life experiences.
A memorial service will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Pungoteague on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend Philip Bjornberg officiating.

A legend in his own right, Len’s success as a doctor was a fraction of the greatness he accomplished. His role as the Eastern Shore’s very own Santa Claus was renowned. With his jolly laugh, smiling eyes, and authentic Santa beard, Len gave the gift of believing and instilled the true spirit of Christmas in the hearts of kids from one to 92, following the magic of Kris Kringle, Billy Floyd Smith.
Len’s love of hunting grew as did his practice and he and his family formed the Coal Kiln Hunt Club on the family farm, which now includes three generations, following him to his own stand on the Machipongo farm. He was ever present in the lives of his family and friends. He was a mentor and dad, not only his children, but to many of their friends, all of whom knew it wasn’t a good time until ‘Pops’ arrived. All went to Len for his calming presence and wise words of advice.
He leaves to continue the Bundick legacy to his children, Kyle Joseph Bundick and his wife, Kelsey, and Kristi Dawn Shaffer and her husband, Nick, all of Harborton, VA; sister, Thalia Mae Bundick of Coal Kiln; brother, Carl Bundick of Painter, VA; grandchildren, Karalynn and Karsyn Bundick and Madison Shaffer; nieces and nephews, Josh Bundick, Caleb Shrieves, Morgan Dollar, Olivia Bundick, Adam Bundick and their families; friend and mother of his children, Terry Bundick; his best friend and partner in crime, Jimmy Dobler; and his dedicated assistant, Trudy Myles.
Len’s death has evoked an overwhelming response of pictures, kind words, and tributes on social media from a wide group of his family, friends, and patients, all who are describing the Len Bundick they had come to know, love, and admire.
A celebration of Len’s life and legacy will take place at the Onancock Elks Lodge on Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
For those who wish to continue to spread the Christmas cheer in Len’s memory, please consider donating to the Onancock Elks No. 1766, P.O. Box 219, Accomac, VA 23301 or simply give your time to make someone’s day a little brighter.

O.W. was the son of Otho Kellam Custis and Mary Wescott Custis, and was born in the family home in Craddockville, Virginia on November 8, 1922. After receiving a degree from The College of William and Mary in 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served in the Pacific until World War II ended.  He soon after brought a beautiful Italian woman named Diana home to the Eastern Shore, where they married, raised three children, enjoyed careers, and eventually retired to a family farm in Nandua.  He was a merchant who operated a hardware store and John Deere dealership in Craddockville for many years.  After closing the store in the seventies, he taught in the Accomack County Schools for twenty-one years, most recently at Nandua High School as a driver education instructor.  He served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers and Merchants Bank for thirty-one years, following in the footsteps of his father ‘O.K.’, who helped re-open that bank in the Great Depression. His various interests over almost a century of life included service in the Naval Reserve and Civil Air Patrol, ‘keeping books’ for the Pungoteague Ruritan Club, flying his airplanes for fun, traveling the world with his devoted wife, and supporting the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club where he was a founding member.
In addition to his parents, O.W. was predeceased by his loving wife, Diana Ciuffreda Custis; and a sister, Marguerite Custis Wise, formerly of Onancock.  He is survived by two sons, Paul Custis (and Wanda) and Roy Custis (and Diane), all of Nandua, and a daughter, Chicki Jo Custis Jester (and Doug) of Fairview.  His grandchildren are Tisha Custis Henderson (and Jim) of Stafford, Ryan Custis (and Kathy) of Nandua, Erica Jo Custis (and Berkley) of Norfolk, Steve Custis (and Jessica) of Nandua, and Leah Jester Krueger (and Josh) of Virginia Beach. Mary-Ellen Coryell Marsh - August 14, 1956 - January 21, 2022

Departed: 01/21/2022 (Onancock)
Obituary Preview: Mrs. Mary-Ellen Coryell Marsh, 65, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend went to rest with the One who loved her first on Friday, January 21, 2022. Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, she was the only daughter welcomed by the late Walter Frank Coryell and Cornelia Faas Coryell Collins on August 14, 1956.
Mary-Ellen began her post high school education at Randolph-Macon College and completed her bachelor’s degree at Loyola University in Baltimore. In 2019, she received a master’s degree in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Gratz College in Philadelphia, PA. Mary-Ellen taught history for Northampton and Accomack Public Schools for 22 years. She loved children and considered it a great privilege to take part in helping them prepare for their futures.
As fate would have it, a trip to the beach on Assateague Island forever changed her future when a handsome lifeguard caught her eye. She married her soulmate and best friend, Clifton D. “Dru” Marsh, Jr. on July 17, 1977, and together, they built a beautiful life centered around unconditional love and faith in the Lord. Throughout the first half of their journey as husband and wife they traveled the country while Dru was active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, ultimately returning to the Eastern Shore. From the moment they met, they made beautiful music together and nothing made Dru happier than hearing Mary-Ellen’s sweet voice alongside him. Their shared passion for both worship and music remained a constant in their lives and in the lives of their children. Over the years, they led services at many different non-denominational churches and always enjoyed spreading the gospel with others.
Mary-Ellen had a special knack for finding the best antiques. She never missed a Saturday yard sale and rarely missed a good auction or estate sale, filling several booths among the Shore’s antique stores with her rare, vintage finds. As a devout Adam Lambert fan, she went to countless concerts and loyally followed his journey as a musician and performer. Though she was grateful for the many joys in her life her greatest blessing was her family, and everything she did and all that she was defined her as a wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. Mary-Ellen shared a special bond with her big brother, Walter, who remained a constant and loving support to her since the day she was born. She was the kind of mom who always knew just what to say and how to make each of her children and grandchildren feel especially loved. She went out of her way to make birthdays and holidays special for all and religiously held a monthly dinner so everyone could gather and spend time together. Mary-Ellen would want those who grieve her earthly presence to be comforted by the Lord and His word…until we meet again.
In addition to her husband of 44 years, she is survived by her children, Maaike Miriam Swift and her husband, Eric, of Greenbackville, VA, Jamie Loraine LeCates-Brown and her husband, Garrett, of Painter, VA, Meghan Elizabeth Zelkowitz and her husband Aaron of Elkridge, MD, Jared Guy Marsh and his wife, Claire, of Painter, VA, and Jesse Matthew Marsh of Wachapreague, VA; brother, Walter Thomas Frederick Coryell and his wife, Mary, of Chestertown, MD; grandchildren, Mia, Ethan, Desiree, Jordan, Hayes, Deaglan, and Marina; two nieces; five nephews; as well as many other extended family members and countless friends. Other than her parents, she was predeceased by her granddaughter, Cameron.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Church of God on Chincoteague Island, VA on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 3:00 p.m., with Pastor Rob Kelly officiating.
Contributions in Mary-Ellen’s memory may be made to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, P.O. Box 2156, Norfolk, VA 23501-2156 (www.chkd.org).

Linda Murphy - December 24, 1941 - January 15, 2022

Departed: 01/15/2022 (Onancock)
Obituary Preview: Linda Murphy, 80, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2022 in her Onancock home. Born December 24, 1941 in Wilmington, DE, she was the daughter of the late Horace Sharrow and Annette Larry Sharrow.  Linda is survived by her husband of 59 years, William “Bill” Murphy, with whom she shared a life full of adventures in this land east of Paradise..
Raised in a catholic home, Linda graduated from Sacred Heart, an “all-girls” catholic School, in Chicago, IL. For higher education she went to the University of Toronto, an international type school, with four separate co-ed colleges each for a different religion. There, Linda attended the catholic college, St. Michael’s, and earned her bachelor’s degree in English Literature.
On one occasion at St. Michael’s Linda moved off campus from her room to an apartment of her own, in order to provide a place for another rather “spirited” student to stay. The student was reportedly being expelled because she had no place to live. Linda, now providing such a place, called the president of the college, who was attempting to orchestrate the expulsion, a Pontius Pilate to his face.
Following graduation, Linda returned to Chicago and began working for Spiegel as first a copy writer, then copy chief, and finally as soft lines catalog manager. In the late 80’s Linda and Bill relocated to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Linda’s advertising expertise continued to grow through her positions at Lankford Sysco in Pocomoke City; Dick Schieber’s Company, where she promoted artists on Delmarva; Anderson Court Reporting, where she worked as recording reporter covering Social Security disability hearings; and Shore Memorial Hospital.
Linda was in ADVERTISING which, as she noted, describes and provides information about products so buyers themselves can make decisions about such products, whether or not to buy for example. MARKETING, in her view, tries to convince potential buyers, “you’re gonna love it,” without giving any facts or real product information. It just tries to convince. No, not even convince, just tell you.
Linda began her own company, Eastbay Advertising, and designed and produced brochures, billboards, leaflets, websites and whatever was required to do the job for the customer.
Along with her expertise within the advertising world, Linda’s myriad of interests and talents were limitless. She was gifted photographer, writer, singer, and musician. She attended classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. She often sang and played her guitar to the songs of Joan Baez and Judy Collins. Linda also worked with Bill as they built, over the course of several years, twelve 26-foot trimaran sail boats. She loved to surround herself with nature and was especially fond of squirrels. Linda leaves behind a legacy that defines the importance of standing up for what is right and ensuring all get a fair deal.
The family will gather privately to celebrate Linda’s life. Donations in Linda’s memory should be mailed directly to Joan Bryan, 7600 Prettyman Circle, Exmore, Virginia, 23350. Joan is a Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator who specializes in the care of Linda’s favorite, Squirrels.
Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com.

Captain Bobby Cherrix - June 05, 1944 - January 11, 2022

Departed: 01/11/2022 (Onancock)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Robert Wayne “Captain Bobby” Cherrix, 77, of Wachapreague, VA, passed away at his daughter’s home in Melfa, VA on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Born June 5, 1944 in Tasley, VA, he was the youngest and only son of five children born to the late Layman Albert Cherrix and Bertha Virginia Gardner Cherrix.
Bobby was a graduate of Onancock High School, class of 1962. Though he held many titles throughout his career, each were centered around his love for the water. As a young man, he began working as first mate to Captain Ray Parker, whose mentorship guided him to becoming captain of his own boat, the “Sea Fox.” After 40 years on the water, Bobby hung his charter hat, and started working in emergency maintenance for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel, where he retired after 11 years.
Bobby’s dedication to his family, along with his civic involvements and hobbies, kept him busy off the water. Over the years, he served his community as a member of the Wachapreague Guide Association, Wachapreague Volunteer Fire Company, and Central Shore Lions Club and was a longtime member of Ocean View United Methodist Church, having attended Broadway Baptist Church in recent years. He was a diehard Redskins fan, never missed a NASCAR race when Richard Petty was on the track, and western shows were his favorite past time. Of his many talents, Bobby was an exceptional singer and could build just about anything. His later years were filled with joy and adventure, as he spent a lot of time traveling with his fiancé, Margaret, and every spare second in between spoiling his grandchildren, all of whom were the greatest loves of his life.
Survivors include his fiancé and best friend of more than a decade, Margaret Baine; his loving children, Jenny Cobb and her husband, David, of Melfa, and Robbie Cherrix and his wife, Kahlan, of Accomac, VA; sister, Nancy Shorter of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Heather Vinnie (Kane), Tiffany Paul (Keith), Hayley Cherrix, Bobby Cherrix (Sam), and Austin Cherrix (Laura); and great-grandson, Kai Cherrix; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Thornes, Helen Carmine and Mildred “Mickey” Carmine; one niece; and one nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Monday, January 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Michael Harrington officiating. Private interment will follow in the Wachapreague Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Though Bobby was well loved and cared for by all, his family would like to extend their gratitude to David Cobb, who cared for him limitlessly over the last two years, as well as special thanks to Lori Tittermary and the staff at Riverside Shore Hospice.
Contributions in Bobby’s memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131 (www.parkinson.org) or to the PAN Foundation, P.O. Box 716408, Philadelphia, PA 19171 (www.panfoundation.org).

Greg Coleman - July 02, 1958 - December 30, 2021

Departed: 12/30/2021 (Onancock)
Obituary Preview: Gregory Scott Coleman passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 30, 2021. Greg was born on Long Island, New York on July 2, 1958, and moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 1979 with his parents, Walter and Emma Coleman, both of whom predeceased him.
For many years, Greg was a constant figure in the town of Onley, Virginia, either riding his bike or walking to McDonald's for the "usual.” He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and became an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Every year his fellow knight, Dom Sorrito, would take Greg to the state Knights of Columbus convention. Greg never met a stranger, and his outgoing personality brought a smile to all he met. Greg never forgot a birthday and called the radio station to have everyone he knew recognized on their special day. He knew Santa was real and the highlight of his Christmas was always a visit to see Santa.
Greg loved trains, and when he lived in Onley, he would go nightly to the tracks to wave at the engineer. Every now and then, the train would stop, and Greg would get a ride to Greenbush in the engine cab. What a thrill! One of his biggest disappointments occurred when the Eastern Shore Railroad ceased to run.
Greg was a frequent competitor in the Special Olympics. The 50-yard dash was his specialty, and he had the gold medals to prove it. He was so proud of those medals and loved showing them to all of his friends. Greg also loved to sing. TV shows today are quite impressive, but Greg's favorite were the old black and white shows like “I Love Lucy.” Thank God for TV Land.
In addition to his parents, Greg was predeceased by his brother, Walter. He is survived by his sisters, Gerry Reilly of Onancock, VA, and Kathy Graziano of Richmond, VA, as well as a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, and friends. The family would like to thank Deborah Weatherly, Pam Savage, Ernest Upshur, Christa Smith, and the many other caregivers who were so wonderful to him during his group home years. Greg was one of a kind and will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Thursday, January 6, 2022 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Onley, VA, Friday, January 7, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with interment following at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery. Reception information will be announced.
