Wally was born on May 25, 1929 near Esperance, NY to parents Walter and Hazel.  While his life began on his family’s farm, he realized that farm life did not suit him. By age 10, he was helping out at Riverside Garage in Esperance.  He became known as an expert mechanic and an extremely hard worker.  While still in high school, he started a business rebuilding automotive starters and generators which eventually became the full-service garage, Esperance Auto Electric. Early in his adult life he and Ruth built a building for their business, a home for his infirm parents and a home for their family. For a time in the early 1950’s, Wally also worked nights at the GE Steam Turbine plant in Schenectady. He later sold his business, worked at the GE Gas Turbine plant and then became a very successful Snap-on Tools dealer. Along the way, he and Ruth mentored several young men who also became successful business owners. He retired in 1988. Wally loved cars, antique cars, race cars, any kind of car.  He restored several antique cars and won National First Place Awards for some of his models.  Wally and Ruth also enjoyed traveling and raising their children.  He enjoyed the challenge of building and fixing things both alone and with his family.  He would often tell his children “I can’t never did anything.”

Sheila C. Holroyd - Unknown - October 03, 2023

Departed: 10/03/2023 (Delanson)
Obituary Preview: Sheila Cailyn Holroyd, born April 28, 1987, at the former St Clare’s Hospital, Schenectady, NY, died unexpectedly October 3, 2023. She entered life full speed ahead and charged through life exuberantly. She was full of smiles, an internal joy that was a force outward, and full of laughter.
She lived with her parents, Nancy and Forrest Holroyd, in the town of Duanesburg, NY, all her life. She was enrolled in the same school her sisters Andrea and Colleen Holroyd attended, Duanesburg Central Schools. Sheila was born with Down syndrome and was later diagnosed with several other serious to life-threatening illnesses—she never let them stop her from spreading love and joy to all who knew her. She is survived by her parents and sisters.
After graduation from high school, she attended programs sponsored by Schenectady ARC. She enjoyed activities in the community and onsite until COVID interrupted programing. She continued online speech therapy with her wonderful SLP during lockdown and returned to Schenectady ARC Maple Ridge December of 2021.
Sheila made sure she was included in all the activities her family enjoyed. She attended annual Old Songs Festivals, as well as frequent concerts, throughout all her years—attending her first one as a 2-month-old and attending her last one June 2023. Some of the years she served as a junior crew volunteer, and at concerts her friend Debra supported her volunteer efforts with CD sales.
Sheila attended Union Presbyterian Church in Schenectady, NY, through her youth. Since her parents sang in the choir, she, her sisters, and a group of other children of choir members sat together behaving well under the watchful eyes of the whole choir and congregation. When her parents became members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany, she also became a church member. As her sisters grew up and moved on, Westminster families made sure she was not alone during services. She became a regular acolyte and occasional usher and banner carrier with the support of loving church members.
Sheila loved doing puzzles, arranging flowers, attending Tri-City Valley Cats games, watching baseball on TV, and shooting hoops. At her Maple Ridge program she loved bowling, bingo, cooking, and arts & craft activities, and especially Dance Party. Sheila will be remembered for her love of life, her joy, and her enthusiastic, “Guess what,” “I’m so happy!” When asked how her day was, she would exclaim, “Fabulous!” and then she would go on with all the things she did that made it such a good, no, fabulous day. She lived fully in the moment and pulled along every friend she met. Sheila was the heart of the Holroyd home. Her death leaves a hole in our center, and the light of our life has dimmed.
Her Celebration of Life service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church between State Street and Chestnut Street in Albany, October 21, 2023, at 2 pm with a reception to follow. Nancy and Forrest would love to have you share in writing a short remembrance to include in a Memory book in lieu of flowers, or to consider a donation to Old Songs, Inc. (37 S. Main Street, Voorheesville, NY 12186) or to Westminster Presbyterian Church (online at wpcalbany.org or checks to the office at 85 Chestnut Street, Albany, NY 12210), two communities who held space for Sheila and let her shine.

Departed: 07/28/2023 (Delanson)
Obituary Preview: Calvin Eugene Weyers, 69, died on July 28, 2023 of a glioblastoma at his home in Delanson.
Born in the Panhandle of Nebraska, Calvin grew up on the Mirage Flats Irrigation Project south of Hay Springs, the fourth of eleven children. On a family farm, life was rich – hard work in the fields and raising cattle and rambunctious play with siblings and neighborhood kids. It was here he developed his lifelong love of a good practical joke. He attended a one-room schoolhouse until 8th grade, when he traveled to Hay Springs for high school. Eager to see the world beyond Nebraska, he earned an appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy and graduated to serve five years as an officer.
Calvin was a gifted athlete at both football and track, excelling in high school and setting records and advancing to a national track competition as a cadet. He competed all four years at the New England Track Championships, was a team captain his 1st Class (senior) year, and continues to hold the CGA record in the 440 yard event, indoor and outdoor.
He lived across the U.S. for Coast Guard assignments on the Westwind icebreaker out of Milwaukee and in Cleveland and Galveston. He completed a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Wyoming in Laramie and moved to Bremerton and Port Orchard, Washington for employment at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. His family settled in Delanson, New York to be close to elderly in-laws in Connecticut. A licensed professional mechanical engineer, he worked for defense contractors General Electric, Westinghouse, and Bechtel, and for Metweld and Lucia Specialized Hauling.
He leaves behind his wife, Jane Bystry, three daughters, Amanda (Weyers) MacDonald, Alexis Weyers, and Eva Weyers, three brothers (Rick, Tim, and Paul), six sisters (Lorinda Elson, Alynn Brodine, Marcia Estrada, Cammy Horn, Amy Snyder, and Anna Taylor), and many friends in New York and northwestern Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his brother Kendall and parents Leo and Idonna (Frandsen) Weyers.
Science toys and experiments were a passion he enjoyed sharing with others. He served as a mentor to gifted students in Schenectady public schools and brought experiments to Duanesburg Days with Christ Episcopal Church. His life was enriched by the Christ Church community and ended peacefully thanks to Community Hospice. If you feel moved to do so, a gift in his memory to the Community Hospice Foundation, 310 South Manning Boulevard, Albany, 12208 (www.communityhospice.org/donate) or the Restoration Fund for Christ Church, P.O. Box 92, Duanesburg, 12056 (www.christchurchduanesburg.org/) would honor his life.
