What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, achievements, and details about their life. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or through a funeral home to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to share the news of a person's passing with others, providing essential details about their life, such as their age, occupation, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to honor and celebrate the deceased person's life, sharing their accomplishments, interests, and personality traits.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist in writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out. Occasionally, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to write the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their military service, charitable work, or other notable contributions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and is often longer and more personalized.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or discounts for online publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries may be editable depending on the platform or publication.

How long are obituaries kept online?

Can I republish an obituary in multiple places?

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased person's values or spirit.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?
