Betsy Henry - Unknown - February 16, 2022

Departed: 02/16/2022 (Myrtle Point)
Obituary Preview: Bets Henry died at home after a long illness— and it’s impossible to imagine the world without her brilliant smile and brave spirit.
The youngest of 6 kids, Bets was born moving 100 mph, tagging along after her older siblings and a menagerie of family pets. When she’d jump into the car with her cool teenage brothers, they made her and her sister Nancy duck down in the back seat if they passed someone. Then she got a horse and set out on her own. You always knew Bets was at the movies when you saw Peewee hitched up outside the theater.
A team player from the start, she was elected student body president at Myrtle Point High and won a volleyball scholarship to Mount Hood Community College. The adventurer then headed off on a 2-month trip to New Zealand with Nancy.
After meeting a Wallowa County cowboy on a family hunting trip, Bets married and moved to eastern Oregon. She thrived amid the mountains, horses and tight-knit community–working at hunting camps and Red’s Horse Ranch, where she belted out Christmas carols while shoveling snow, and on staff at Enterprise Animal Hospital. No matter where she was employed, she outworked everyone around her.
One of her great passions was volunteering every summer for the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo, where she did everything from parade-rider to cook and greeter in the Hospitality Room. She eventually served as Director, was named volunteer of the year, and received the Justin Committee Person of the Year award.
While she knew everybody in Joseph and Enterprise, her social circle extended around the world. She was so connected to her many MySpace friends that she was one of that platform’s loyal last subscribers.
In 2014, she and her cats, the “T-Twins,” returned to Myrtle Point to help care for her dad. She convinced her brother to load several huge rocks into the U-Haul, taking a piece of the land she loved so much with her. She decorated her new house with those rocks, and images of cowgirls, cowboy boots and sunflowers.
Soon enough, customers at Hometown Hardware and golfers at the Coquille Elks Club were met with her teasing humor and infectious giggle–Bets had quickly become part of the community again. She logged hundreds of miles walking around the local track listening to novels on CD, and was the glue in every family reunion and Thanksgiving, assigning the potlucks and running the cornhole games.
It’s so easy to say that someone “lit up a room,” but Bets absolutely illuminated it. She was stubborn, independent, and keenly insightful—slicing to the truth of a situation, shaking her head and saying, “Jiminy!” There was nothing more fun than sitting in the sun with Bets and commenting on the world going by.
Thank you for shining your light and standing up for what matters most, Bets. We are all better for having been in your presence and will love you forever.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rolland Leep; mother, Margery Pullen; and brother Perry Roper. She is survived by her partner, Ron Robinson; stepmother, Gerry Leep; siblings Mickey Dupuis, John (Bruce) Roper, Nancy Jensen, Steve Leep and their families; and stepbrothers and stepsister Greg Wilberger, Gale Wilberger, Ginger Lorence, and their families. She leaves many nephews and nieces and more friends than could ever be counted.
Contributions in Bets’ memory may be made in her name to the “Christmas Basket Fund,” Coquille Valley Elks, PO Box 428, Coquille, OR 97423 or to Chief Joseph Days, 401 N Main Street Joseph, OR 97846.
A celebration of Bets’ life will take place on June 18, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, 54928 Maple Heights Road, Coquille, OR 97423.

Charles Meyer - October 27, 1938 - January 19, 2022

Departed: 01/19/2022 (Myrtle Point)
Obituary Preview: Charles Leslie Meyer (known to family and friends as Charlie, Les or Chuck, and of course Papa Charlie), age 83 passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2022, surrounded by his wife and four children. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Linda, his daughter Cindy Hubbard and her husband Jim, his son Joseph Meyer and his wife Roshell, his son Charles Meyer Jr. and his wife Rosalind, and his son Ricky Meyer and his wife Lisa. He is also survived by his sister Delores Thurman and his brothers Eddy Minor, Rick Minor, and Jimmy Minor, as well as eleven grand-children and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Charles was born October 27th, 1938, in Eagle Butte South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation to his parents Aleta Maude Libolt-Meyer (Minor) and Joseph Harlen Meyer.
In approximately 1942, after a hail- storm ruined their garden, the Meyer family decided to move to Oregon, settling in Malin. A few years later, Joseph was drafted into the Army and sent to boot camp before being sent off to war. In Joseph’s absence, Aleta worked in the potato fields side by side with German prisoners while Charles and his sister, Delores, played nearby. Sadly, Joseph was killed in the war and Charles lost his father in 1945. In 1947 Aleta re-married and Charles lived on multiple different farms around the area. He attended several schools including Coos River, Bandon, and Dora before graduating from Coquille High School in 1956.
Just before graduation, Charles’ luck took a turn for the better when he was set up on a date with Linda Stibitz. In his own words that he took from a song, he went from a Jack to a King, he played and Ace and won a Queen. Linda became the Lucy to his Charlie Brown. The two were married May 7th, 1957, and went on to have four beautiful children.
Charles worked for Georgia Pacific mill and railroad and Roseburg Lumber. In 1979 he took a job with the Coos County Road department and after 20 years of service retired in February 1999. Charlie was known by his co-workers to be very meticulous in his work. He took a great deal of pride in his job and loved running his brush cutter.
Charlie loved the outdoors, his family fondly remembers spending time with him camping, hunting, and fishing. He was a very gentle and loving man who adored his children and grandchildren. He spent many happy hours attending their sports games and other activities. He loved the Lord and served as a Deacon at the First Christian Church in Myrtle Point.
The family would like to extend a sincere and special thank you to Dr. Joshi Sushan, Christian (RN), Darlene (RN), Kayla (RN) and the staff at Bay Area Hospital for the compassionate care and support that they provided for Charlie and his family.

Departed: 12/27/2021 (Myrtle Point)
Obituary Preview: Paul Heikkila, son of Walter Heikkila and Sylvia Costello, was born April 5th, 1946 and raised in Aberdeen Washington. In 1967 he married his high school sweetheart, Kay. After graduating from the University of Washington he moved to Coquille, Oregon in 1969 to work as a fisheries extension agent in Coos County, through Oregon State University and Sea Grant. He loved his job and recounted recently that one of his proudest professional accomplishments was helping launch several watershed associations along the Oregon coast in the 1990s, which brought together landowners to improve water quality and fish habitat. He remained involved in the Coquille Watershed Association for many years. Paul also fished commercially part-time for decades – mostly for salmon. Paul could talk your ear off about fish and the weather, but also enjoyed clam digging, duck hunting, reading all the newspapers he could find, and spoiling his dogs. Sadly, he struggled with chronic health issues in recent years and not long after losing Kay to a heart attack, Paul passed away at home on December 26th, 2021.
He is survived by his brothers Vern and Wayne, daughters Danelle and Tanya, sons-in-law Cliff and Todd, and four wonderful grandchildren: Claire, Alaric, Isaac, and Annika.
A memorial service will be planned for the spring of 2022.
