Marc Jon Hogden - August 19, 1949 - May 09, 2024

Departed: 05/09/2024 (Westby)
Obituary Preview: Marc Jon Hogden passed away peacefully at his home on May 9, 2024, with his family by his side, after a brave and thoughtful struggle with cancer. He was born on August 19, 1949, to Raymond and Eleanor (Unseth) Hogden, and grew up in Westby, Wisconsin. As a boy, Marc and his friends would explore the hilly, wooded pasture behind his house (known as the “woods”), climb the apple trees across the street, and pull the rhubarb from a neighbor’s patch. In the spring, he would frequently bring his mom violets from the woods.
He and his neighborhood pal, Booey, spent hours capturing bumble bees in glass jars, and never getting stung (or at least not admitting to it). His first real job was a snow-shoveling business that he started with one of his other neighborhood buddies.
Like his father, Marc was very talented with numbers. He could solve mathematical problems in his head that sent others to paper and pencil before calculators were commonplace. He was skilled at solving all kinds of puzzles and very challenging brain teasers from an early age. He graduated from Westby High School in 1967. His mathematical acumen led to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1971.
Though trained in accounting, Marc's true calling was in the traditional craft of stone masonry and bricklaying, a vocation where his precision and skill were evident in every project he undertook.
When he wasn’t working as a master stone mason and bricklayer, Marc spent time on his hobby farm tinkering with various projects and improvements, raising cash crops as well as flowers and vegetables. He and his partner, Cheryl, always looked forward to spring to begin planting and enjoying the flowers and vegetables.
Marc’s home also became a refuge for feral cats, whom he befriended and cared for as well as one special cat named Snoopy, who decided she needed to live in the house to be closer to him.
Marc enjoyed the company of his friends: laughter and deep conversations, card games and cheering on his favorite sports teams on TV.
Marc was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, William Jon Hogden; his partner, Cheryl Wrobel; his sister, Linda Beth Hogden; his sister, Anola (A. J.) (Marvin) Leisso; his nephew, Jeffrey Urbanek; and great nephew, Peter Urbanek.
Marc's life will be honored on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, with a visitation at 10:30 a.m. and a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby, Wisconsin, followed by interment at Coon Prairie Cemetery. A gathering and light lunch will follow at the funeral home.
A special thank you to Gundersen Health System Hospice program for their caring services.

Larry L. Stewart - March 30, 1944 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (Westby)
Obituary Preview: Garland, TX - Larry L Stewart was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and patriot. A retired engineer at Raytheon/L3/E-Systems who cherished his leisure moments with family and friends, often by the water’s edge. Larry passed away on April 7th, 2024, at the age of 80 from natural causes, surrounded by friends and family that will continue to honor his legacy by celebrating his life and accomplishments.
Larry was born in Mitchell, SD on March 30, 1944. His parents Norman & Phyllis Stewart moved to Omaha, Nebraska when he was young where he went to Benson High School and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Larry pursued his dreams to serve his country in the U.S. military, joining the U.S. Army in 1963. After leaving the military with honor, Larry worked for ESI, which later became E-Systems in Bellevue, Nebraska. Shortly after, is where he met his wife, Carol (Fremstad) Stewart, with whom he shared a life filled with cherished memories. Their union extended to include their son, James Stewart, who became an integral part of their family. Moved to Garland, Texas in 1988 with E-Systems/L3/Raytheon where they enjoyed spending time on the water with his three grand-crew members, Gabrielle, Kennedi and Jett.
Larry navigated not only the practical aspects of his daily defense work but also the currents of the sea. From serene lakes to the vast expanse of ocean, he hoisted sails and set forth on countless voyages. The sun danced upon his weathered face as he charted courses along both coasts. The islands off the Florida coast were his away paradise and held secrets known only to those who dared to explore their hidden coves and sandy shores. His sailboats were more than vessels; they were extensions of his spirit and his family. Each creak of the hull whispered stories of sunsets, moonlit nights, and the camaraderie of fellow seafarers. Larry reveled in the salt-kissed air, the taste of adventure, and the freedom that only the open sea could provide. His hands, calloused from years of rigging and knots, held the wisdom of tides and the courage to chase horizons.
As the sun dips below the horizon one last time, we bid farewell to our fearless sailor. May the winds carry him to eternal shores, where the waves forever sing his name.
A Texas Friends & Family Visitation is scheduled for 5-7pm on Friday, April 12, 2024, at the Williams Funeral Home in Garland.
A gathering in Wisconsin will be held from Noon until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. A short prayer service will follow. Larry will be laid to rest at Westby Coon Prairie Cemetery with full military honors.

Conrad August Nehls - September 23, 1939 - January 16, 2024

Departed: 01/16/2024 (Westby)
Obituary Preview: Conrad August Nehls, age 84, was called to his eternal home on January 16, 2024, at Vernon Manor Nursing Home surrounded by those he chose to care for him, after a long journey of declining health.
He was born September 23, 1939, on the first anniversary of his late parents’ Bernie and Rosella (neé Nuttleman) Nehls of Barre Mills, WI. Six years later, his sister, Dorthy, joined the family. Conrad was baptized, attended parochial school until eighth grade, and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church and School (WELS) in Barre Mills. He graduated class of ’57, from West Salem High School.
Conrad then served his country by enlisting in the Army. After being honorably discharged, he returned to the family farm. Conrad’s professional life included lifelong work on the family dairy farm, being a lineman for La Crosse Telephone and Cable, a milk hauler for Tri State Milk Cooperative, working at Webster Lumber, being a Herdsman for Dutchmill Farm, and a Farm Manager for Vernon County Farms.
He grew up surrounded by extended family in Barre Mills, WI on County Road YY. Conrad developed his bowling expertise and love of showing cows from his Uncle Fredrick Nuttleman. It was while showing cows at the Wisconsin State Fair that he heard Linda Carol Klahn singing with friends in the barn aisle. He then took a show string of cows to Vernon County Fair so he could hear more of that beautiful voice.
Linda and Conrad were married on October 28, 1961, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua, WI. They celebrated 57 years of Christian marriage. Conrad stated many times after Linda’s passing in 2019, how he missed her voice and their deep conversations. Throughout their marriage, they continued to share a passion for showing cows and horses and watching the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Bucks and Brewers. Conrad introduced his three daughters at an early age to the Christian faith and the show ring where his family worked, played, and grew together.
Conrad stated his happiness overflowed when he met his first grandchild, Darin, for his 49th birthday. Papa Conrad loved Darin like a son as they spent many hours together eating sour apple lollipops, fishing, shooting fireworks, and showing cows. Tessa and T.J. came next, followed by Angelo. Angelo warmed Grandpa’s heart by pushing his wheelchair for medical procedures, putting a smile on his face with every joke told, and educating him about dinosaurs. Meeting his first great-grandchild, Tristan Walvort, brought a ray of sunshine to his room.
Conrad will live on in our hearts for sharing his Christian faith, having an infracaninophile heart, and ecleptic show strings. Until we meet again.
He is survived by his daughters: Carie (Tom) Wagner, Christine Nehls, and Carmen Nehls; his grandchildren: Darin Nehls-Wiggins, Tessa (Tyler) Walvort, T.J. (Bailey) Wagner, Angelo Nehls Adaya; great-grandchild, Tristan Walvort; sister, Dorothy (Don) Peterson and their children: Scot, Jill and her son, Gabe, and Kurt; along with numerous cousins and friends.
Memorials may be made in honor of Conrad’s life to Vernon Manor in Viroqua, WI.
A Life Celebration Service for Conrad will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday February 3, 2024, at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. Friends may call on the family during a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will immediately follow the service.

Obituary Preview: Kenneth Ray Moser, known fondly by all as Ken, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2023, in Monroe, WI, after a long, brave battle with dementia. He was born on September 17, 1953, in Manchester, IA, to the late Ray and surviving Ruth Moser. His departure from this world leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, creativity, and selflessness.

His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched and in the land he so lovingly cared for. His memory will be cherished and his life celebrated as an example of a life well-lived.
In the words of an old farmer’s saying, Ken didn’t just live in the land, he was a part of it. And though he is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to be a part of the land he loved so dearly.
