Departed: 04/19/2024 (Pittsburgh)
Obituary Preview: Jacqueline Delores Richardson, affectionately known as Jackie, peacefully passed away on April 19, 2024, at UPMC East Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Born on April 20, 1929, at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, Jackie was the beloved daughter of Olivia Singleton and James Oscar Hughes Sr. She was one of six siblings.
Jackie's life was a testament to resilience, compassion, and faith. After completing her education at Belmar Elementary School, Baxter Jr. High School, and Westinghouse High School, she pursued her calling in nursing, attending Nursing School in New York. Jackie embarked on her nursing career at Montefiore Hospital as an RN, where she dedicated herself to caring for others. Her journey in healthcare concluded with her early retirement as a Field Nurse from Allegheny County due to medical issues.
Despite facing obstacles, including a life-threatening spine condition, Jackie's determination and unwavering spirit propelled her forward. She defied medical expectations by regaining her ability to walk after undergoing lifesaving emergency surgery. Throughout her rehabilitation, she remained steadfast in her commitment to care for her husband, John E. Richardson Sr., who was also battling illness.
Following the passing of her beloved husband, Jackie continued to persevere until the summer of 2010 when she was confined to a wheelchair. Supported by her loving family, her courage, determination and devoted caregiver, Ramona Chinn, Jackie was able to live independently until 2020. During this time period Jackie and Ramona’s bond blossomed into a cherished mother-daughter relationship. Even during challenging times, including Jackie's multiple battles of COVID, Ramona remained a constant source of comfort and support.
Jackie's faith remained central to her life, as she was a dedicated member of Carter Chapel CME church, which became Carter Cleaves, and now New Destiny CME as a Steward serving on the Missionary Society and Treasury Boards until her health declined. Jackie was the recipient of several “Woman of the Year” awards from Carter Chapel CME and another award for service from the Ohio Central Indiana Annual Conference.
In addition to her commitment to service, Jackie enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including spending time with family and friends, traveling, and enjoying a comforting meal with family and friends. Jackie was also a huge STEELER fan and enjoyed watching and critiquing the games.
Jackie is preceded in death by her husband, John E. Richardson Sr., parents, Olivia Singleton and James Oscar Hughes Sr., brother James Oscar Hughes Jr., sister Frenchie O. Richardson, and her brothers David E. Hughes and Darrell H. Hughes.
She is survived by her loving son, John E. Richardson Jr., grandchildren John E. Richardson III and Natalie R. Richardson, great-grandchildren Elijah J. Richardson, Noah E. Richardson, and Uriah I. Richardson, and her sister Vivian O. Shelton, nieces Patricial Coleman and Kellie Shelton, nephew Monty Hughes, and several great and grand nieces and nephews.
Jackie's legacy of strength, resilience, and love will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace, her memory a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
In the tapestry of life she wove, a mother's touch, a friend's love. A grandmother's smile, an aunt's care, in every role, she was always there. With arms wide open, heart so true, she nurtured dreams and comforted too. Through joys and sorrows, she'd abide, a beacon of love, unwavering guide. In every whisper of the wind, in every song the birds sing. Her legacy lives on, ever bright, a constellation in our darkest night. For the love she gave, in every way, we honor her this solemn day. Mother, grandmother, friend, and more, In our hearts, forevermore.
