Barbara Jeanell Lungelow - March 31, 1942 - October 30, 2018

Departed: 10/30/2018 (Cincinnati)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Jeanell Davis was born March 31, 1942 in Orlando, Florida. She was the first child of Jessie Broadwater, Sr and Nell Davis. Barbara eventually relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio to be with the rest of her family. Barbara always set her sights on achieving great things for her community, even in high school. She was the first black student at Taft High School to be on the Shillito’s High School Sewing Board, and the first black woman hired at the Downtown Cincinnati McAlpins Department Store.
After life’s circumstances led her to be a divorced mother of six children, Barbara sought out not just a job, but a career that would provide for her family. She was trained by the Cincinnati Police Department and obtained work with a private security firm before later playing an integral part of the Security Department of Western & Southern Insurance. Through her diligence and hard work, she obtained the rank of Lieutenant before her career was ultimately cut short by an injury to her back.
In 1982, the Lord directed Barbara to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and in 1987 she joined the Shiloh family. She began volunteering with the Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Community Service Food Pantry to fulfill a vow she made years earlier when she found herself in a position of need. She began instilling in her family the need to give back to others because the Lord had richly blessed them. In 1990, the Pantry was in need of a new director, and Sister Lungelow accepted the challenge. She served as the director for 28 years, bringing her total years of service to the Adventist Outreach Ministries team to 31 years of love and dedication. “The Center” as it was lovingly known to many, became her passion. Through her hard work, networking skills, and loving heart, she was able to cultivate partnerships and agreements throughout Hamilton County with companies including Proctor & Gamble, Supervalue Inc. (Biggs Grocery Stores), Panera Bread, Buskin Bakery, The Kroger Company, Trader Joes, and the Freestore Foodbank, to assist in feeding the city’s neediest residents. Over the last four years of her direction at The Center, the staff served 98,547 people. She will truly be missed by Greater Cincinnati as a whole, and Avondale in particular.
Barbara was also a noted member of the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Team, where she worked within the Child Care Division as a Supervisor. After every major disaster within the United States, Barbara was sent to provide relief, including the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Sandy.
The light of Barbara’s life was her family. At various times, all of her children and most of her grandchildren were drafted into some sort of work for The Center. Her family has always seen her as a miraculous provider, a mother who made a way out of no way. To the Community, she was a beacon of light, a ray of hope, a listening ear, and a voice of encouragement. Her legacy will truly live long, as her presence will always be felt.
Barbara was proceeded in death by her father, Jessie Broadwater, Sr.; her mother, Nell Broadwater; and her brother, Jessie Broadwater, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Lisha Lungelow, Diano Angel, Alvester Lungelow, Mario Lungelow, Soncirae Lungelow-Hehl (Joseph), and D’Avino Lungelow; her grandchildren, Angel Lungelow Cooper, Calise Lungelow, Sydney Angel, Jasmine Angel, Kamica Smith, Roxanne Logan, Dominique Lungelow, Ariana Lungelow-Hehl, Cassie Hehl, and Katie Hehl; her great-grandchildren Jashaunti and Keymante Lyte, Cillian and Vincent Logan, Karter Jung and Kennedy Lungelow; and her nieces Antoinette Broadwater and Alison Johnson.
Visitation is from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm, on  Friday, November 2, 2018, at the Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3660 Washington Avenue, Cincinnati  (45229).   The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 12:00 pm.
Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45232. To share a memory of Barbara or leave a special message for the Lungelow family, please click the "Tribute Wall" tab above and to the right, enter the information, and click "Save Post."

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

How long are online obituaries available?

The duration of online obituaries varies depending on the platform. Some websites may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I share an online obituary on social media?

What is a memorial website?

A memorial website is a dedicated online space where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences for the deceased. It can serve as a permanent tribute and virtual gathering place for those who want to pay their respects.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or historical societies may also have physical copies of old newspapers that you can access.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy?

What is the etiquette for responding to an obituary?

If you're unable to attend the funeral or memorial service, consider sending a condolence message or card to the family expressing your sympathy. You can also leave a comment or message on the online obituary if available.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This allows friends and acquaintances to make a meaningful contribution in memory of their loved one.
