Obituary Preview: Candler – Frankie Jo Young Best, age 92, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at her sister’s residence.
Born in Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Dexter and Jincie Jo Cairnes Young. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Best and two sisters, Judy Hill, and Patsy Mann. Frankie retired from BASF Corporation with 45 years of service and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church.
Frankie is survived by a son, Mike Best; a sister, Becky Warren and her husband, Dean; a brother, Troy Young and his wife, Carolyn; and Frankie’s extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

A native of Meridian, Mississippi, he was a son of the late James Harvey and Annie Gay Franklin Raley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne Raley, who died in 1992. Bill attended Long Creek High School and enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Judy Randolph Raley; one son, Richard A. Raley and wife, Deanna, of Waynesville; a sister, Mary Joyce Reeves of Quitman, Mississippi; a brother, Roy Raley of Meridian, Mississippi; and one grandchild, Reno Parker Raley.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Paul Murdock officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Robert "Bob" Davis - October 06, 1934 - October 29, 2018

Obituary Preview: Canton - Robert Earl “Bob/Bobby” Davis went home to be with the Lord October 29, 2018 after a long illness.
Bob was born in 1934 in Offerman, GA to Lester and Martha Davis. He was proceeded in life by both of his parents; his siblings, Doris Ivory, Anna Bell Trowell, and Clyde “Buddy” Davis; and his Beloved Grandson, Bobby Ager. He moved to Hollywood, Florida as a teen where he was a graduate of South Broward High School and proudly married the love of his life and soulmate of 61 years, Carol Ann Carroll, in 1957. He served in the National Guard. Bob loved all things mechanical. He loved racing dragsters and was an IHRA World Champion. The racing world knew him as “Mr. Lucky” #5 which he earned by his love of winning. One of his and his family’s proudest moments was his induction into the Miami/Hollywood Speedway Park Hall of Fame in 2014. In Bob’s later years, he enjoyed riding his Harley with family and friends. Bob retired in 1989 as the Chief Mechanic for the City of Hollywood at which time he moved to Cruso, NC where he had a family vacation home since 1976. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all of his heart.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Davis; his daughter, Debbie Davis and fiancé Jerry Krawczyk; daughter, Denise Boggie and son-in-law, Christopher Boggie; and daughter, Darlene Smith and fiancé, Wayne Cabe and children. His grandchildren: Thomas Mammarelli, Brittney Zarczynski and husband Jordan Zarczynski, Bradley Cento, Nick Mammarelli, Elizabeth Mammarelli, Danielle Smith, Chase Boggie and wife Mikal Boggie, and Paige Boggie; and by his great grandsons, Grayson and Griffin Boggie and Baby Zarczynski, due in January. He is also survived by his siblings, Maggie Medlin of Lake City, FL; Joseph and Lory Chancy of Lake City, FL; and sister-in-law, Donna Davis of White, GA. In addition, he is survived by his many nieces, nephews and family members.
Bob lived a much fulfilled life and will be missed by many, but most importantly by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Adam Guice officiating. Burial will follow at Cruso United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

A native of McDowell County, he was a son of the late Walter and Julia Connor Moore. Don loved to make furniture, wooden toys, as well as going fishing and camping. He loved spending time with his family and was a long-time member at Pole Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and usher.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Norma Robinson Moore; two daughters, Donnah Cole and husband, Todd, of Old Fort and Shannon Redmon and husband, Trent, of Asheville; and four grandchildren, Michael Cole and wife, Amanda, of Candler, Allie Cole Morris and husband, Tyler, of Johnson City, Tennessee, Chase and Bryson Redmon, both of Asheville.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Pole Creek Baptist Church with the Reverend Dennis Thurman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of Edna Margaret Rhodarmer Broyles and the late Porter Addison Broyles. Margaret was a 1970 graduate of Pisgah High School and attended Western Carolina University receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education. She began her teaching career in Andrews, from there to Black Mountain Center for three years and to Erwin High School for 18 years. She was a beloved teacher for students with special needs and developed enduring relationships with all the students she taught. Margaret was an avid reader and enjoyed arts and crafts, gardening and quilting. She had a kind spirit and was a friend to all. Margaret was an individual who looked ahead to see what needs people may have and tried to fulfill those needs. She was a member of Plains United Methodist Church and was instrumental in establishing a library at the church. Surviving in addition to her mother is a sister, Martha Broyles Norris of Canton and a nephew, Nathan Robinson
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Plains United Methodist Church with the Reverend Zach Christy officiating.

Obituary Preview: Rex, Ga - Patricia Marie Sales, 54, passed away peacefully in her home in the care of her husband of 33 years, Neil Sales, on Monday, October 28, 2018.
Patricia was born November 14, 1963 in New Albany, Indiana. She was the 8th child born to Flora Hayes and the late Chester Patrick Hayes. She lived with her parents and 8 siblings in Henryville, Indiana while growing up.
Patricia had one daughter born Amanda Nicole Hayes on August 30, 1980 and on February 16, 1985 she married Neil Sales whom also loving adopted her daughter Amanda.
In addition to her mother, Flora, she is survived by her husband of 33 years, Neil Sales; her daughter, Amanda Isenhardt (Joshua) of Shelby Twp, Michigan; her step-son, Christopher Sales (Heidi) of Strasburg, Virginia; two sisters, Ann Worrell (Will) and Theresa Spicer; and her six brothers, George (Barbara), Michael (Mary), Roy (Violet), John (Connie), Joseph (Diana) and William (Patsy). She was also blessed with and loved her two grandchildren, Ethan and Lilah Isenhardt and one step-grandchild, Taylor Sales.
As an avid reader, she would often finish an entire book in a single day. Which amounted to many overflowing bookcases and boxes and boxes of books. Patricia was known for her love of mystery novels especially those involving vampires.
She earned both her associates degree in nutrition and dietetics and a bachelor’s degree in Education.
She was a loving mother and devoted wife. As an Army wife, she was blessed with the opportunity to travel and also live in many places, including North Carolina, Germany, Amsterdam, the fields of Holland, Paris, France, several islands of Hawaii, and finally settling with Neil and Amanda, in Georgia in 1993, where she lived until she passed.
Patricia will be dearly missed by those who loved her.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at New Cruso Cemetery with the Reverend Josh Isenhardt officiating.

She is survived by her husband, of 43 years, Douglas Blaylock; two daughters, Heidi Rodgers of Titusville, Florida and Megan Blaylock of Canton; a son, Shannon Blaylock (Brandi) of Clyde; two sisters, Ginger Burnette and Tammy Evans (Mike “Worm”) all of Canton; three grandchildren, Shayla Reeves, Lana Blaylock and Hailey Blaylock; a niece, Tosha Cook (Josh) and a nephew, Michael Evans (Charity) and she was the great aunt of Loren and Kendall Cook and Tate Evans.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Jane Devlin Worley; two daughters, Angela Vargas (Jeff) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Susan Worley of Canton; a son, Brian Worley of Canton; a brother, Charles Worley of Statesville, NC; and five grandchildren, Shelby, Olivia and Lindsay Vargas; and Jared and Jordyn Shoemaker.

He loved to go fishing, camping and spending time with his grandkids. Steve loved his sweet wife and family dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy Burke; three daughters, Brandy Herndon (Ray), Chasity Hall (Stephen) and Tiffany Woody (Aaron); four sons, Scott Burke (Jennifer), Eric Jones (Tracy), Justin Saunders (Shasta) and Chris York (Melissa); one sister, Vickki Burke (Pat); a nephew, Thomas Laws (Tracy); special friend Tonda Ventura; fourteen grandchildren; and a host of extended family.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Jesse Thomas “Doc” and Lois Buchanan Sorrells. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Sorrells, who died in 1991 and a son, Greg Sorrells. Many days, you could see Robert sitting in the stands cheering on his great-grandson in football. He was kind, considerate and a beloved, husband and papaw. Robert loved spending quality time with his family. He retired from Champion International with 42 years of service and served in the National Guard during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by a son, Keith Sorrells of Shelby; one sister, Martha Lowe of Canton; a sister-in-law, Polly Myers of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Anthony, Daniel, Levi and Brittany Sorrells; and three great-grandchildren, Tanner, Bentley and Hunter Sorrells, Cayley and Braden.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 20, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late William Gaston and Connie Allen Rymer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Shane Willis and a great-granddaughter, Shayla Garland. Goon was the last of eight children and a United States Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Champion International and loved golfing and working on old cars.
He is survived by three daughters, Debbie Stamey, Cindy Rymer and Donna Rymer (Paula) all of Canton; two grandchildren, Sherri Stamey Garland (Larry) and T.J. Amos; and five great-grandchildren, Calem Garland, Kailee Garland, Bryce Amos, Kyla Willis and Colin Willis; a granddaughter-in-law, Tanja Mueller Willis of Germany; and a special great-grand dog, Lucy Bell.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Greg Metcalf officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Vernon Clark, who died in 2014; a son, Larry Wayne Clark, who died in 2016; three sisters, Hilda Mann, Mary Lou Henson, and Mavis Henson; two brothers, James Weldon and Robert Lee Henson. Lillian was a very active member of Long’s United Methodist Church, loved gardening, quilting, reading and most of all her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Terry Joe and Teresa Hipps Clark of Lawrenceville, Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Clour Clark of Clyde; two sisters, Nancy Wilson of Candler and Betty Henson of Canton; and two grandchildren, Christopher William Clark and his wife, Neha Patel, of Indianapolis, Indiana and Brittany Annette Crook of Lawrenceville, Georgia.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Way Medford Mease, Sr. and Althea Henson Mease. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Cook Mease, who died in 2017; and a sister, Nancy Blazer Herren. Way was a United States Navy veteran having served in World War II and a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. He retired as office manager from the National Climatic Center in 1981.
He is survived by three daughters, Myra Ann Brown (Joseph) of Black Mountain, Joy Elaine Allen (Patrick McManus), of Hephzibah, Georgia, and Lycia Carol Murray (Scott) of Canton; two sisters, Dorothy McCracken of Clyde and Margaret Husnian of Candler; one brother, Charles Mease of Fletcher; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Spring Hill Baptist Church with the Reverend Matt Rhea and Reverend Scott Murray officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Obituary Preview: Canton – Mary Aileen Francis Rice passed away peacefully at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center on Thursday, October 4, 2018, just two days shy of her ninetieth birthday.
Aileen was born on October 6, 1928 in Everett, Washington to Mattie Anna Dee Francis and Fred Dewey Francis.
Following her father’s unexpected passing in the spring of 1929, the family returned to their roots in Haywood County where Aileen would live for the remainder of her life.
Aileen was a 1947 graduate of Clyde High School and attended Gardner Webb College.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Aileen’s life was centered around serving others and the community she loved. Aileen retired in 1986 from the Haywood County School System. She worked in the Guidance Department of Pisgah High School and was an active member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church.
The consummate fighter, Aileen was a two-time survivor of breast cancer. Additionally, she was instrumental in forming the grassroots effort, BAND – Beaverdam Against Nuclear Dumping – in 1986 to help preserve the community she so loved.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Jack Jesse Rice, who passed away in 2014; parents, loving stepfather, Henry Nelson Mease; brother, Fred Dewey Francis, Jr. and sister, Phyllis Mease Haynes.
Surviving to cherish her memory are daughters, Suzanne Rice Oakley and her husband, John, of Tampa, Florida, Robyn Rice Gillis and her husband, Paul, of Greenville, South Carolina and Kim Rice Adams of LaGrange, Georgia; grandchildren, Logan Adams Johnston and her husband, Chris, of Gulfport, Mississippi, John Paul Gillis and his wife, Brittney, of Greenville, South Carolina, Carlyle Gillis of Greenville, South Carolina, Emery Adams of LaGrange, Georgia, Jack Oakley of Tampa, Florida and Gray Oakley of Boca Raton, Florida; great-grandsons, Deacon Gillis and Jack Johnston. Also surviving are her life-long best friend, Bonnie Sorrells Carver and her daughter, Janice Carver Parham, whom Aileen affectionately referred to as her fourth daughter.
The family wishes to thank the countless people on Beaverdam who shared a dear friendship with both Jack and Aileen.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Beaverdam United Methodist Church at 80 Rice Cove Road, Canton, NC 28716 with a reception following to celebrate her beautiful ninety years.

Peggy enjoyed crafts, sewing and making clothes for her family, cooking, working in the yard, and in her flowers.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Joel Swink; two sons, Michael Wheeler (Karen) of Morganton and Kevin Wheeler (Jennifer) of Candler; two step daughters, Nancy Rice of Sylva and Amy Elders (Danny) of Wilmont; one brother, Roy Stamey (Barbara) of Clyde; four grandchildren, Megan, Bailey, and Colton Wheeler, and Will Holcombe; two great-grandchildren, Brayden Gibson and Knox Thomas; and many nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Allan Rash and Reverend Davis Plemmons officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Glen Ray Massie; three daughters, Donna Crawford Bruce (Jim) of Candler, Gayle Helmadollar of Greeneville, Tennessee and Tamara Iafornaro (Mark) of Sanford, Florida; two sons, Richard L. Crawford, Jr. (Loretta) of Candler and Michael Massie (Connie) of Flat Rock; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Carson Mosley and Reverend Richard Baird officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Sarah Jones; sister, Mary Ann Greene, two brothers, Jeff Smathers and Phillip W. Smathers (Stacy); a brother-in-law, Darryl Messer; nieces and nephews, Brian and Brandon Greene, Ashley and Joseph Messer, Kristen Rigdon (Colton), and Darian and Delaney Smathers; and a great nephew, Lane Rigdon.

He is survived by a daughter, Veronica Limeberry and husband, Alexander Munjal of Charlottesville, Virginia; one sister, Teresa Lee Limeberry of Candler; and one brother, Alvin Douglas Limeberry and wife, Cindy, of Candler.
