Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify friends, family, and acquaintances of the death, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased's life, personality, and accomplishments.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often limited to 200-300 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed. A good rule of thumb is to aim for a length of around 250-500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and celebrate the person's life. Some publications may charge extra for photo inclusion.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They will likely require you to provide the written obituary text, along with payment for publication. Be sure to check their deadlines and word count limitations.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Keep in mind that your loved ones may still need to review and finalize the details after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer more affordable options.

Can I make corrections to an already-published obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in a published obituary, contact the publication or funeral home immediately. They may be able to make corrections or issue a revised version. However, this may not always be possible, especially if the error was made by the submitter.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the fact of someone's death, without providing additional biographical information. It's often used when a full obituary is not feasible or desired.

What is a eulogy?

A eulogy is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the life and legacy of the deceased. It's typically delivered during a funeral or memorial service by someone who knew the person well.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous anecdotes or personality traits can help capture the essence of the deceased and bring comfort to those reading it.

How do I handle sensitive or controversial information in an obituary?

Tread carefully when addressing sensitive topics like cause of death, marital issues, or other potentially controversial subjects. It's essential to prioritize respect for the deceased and their loved ones while still being honest and authentic.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Incorporating meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and emotion to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's personality or spirit.

What is an online memorial?

An online memorial is a digital space where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences after someone's passing. Many online obituary platforms offer this feature as part of their services.

How long do online memorials stay active?

The duration of an online memorial varies depending on the platform or provider. Some may remain active indefinitely, while others may have time limits or require periodic renewals.

Can I create an online memorial for someone who passed away years ago?

Absolutely! You can create an online memorial at any time, even if the person passed away years ago. This can be a meaningful way to continue celebrating their life and legacy.

Are online memorials secure and private?

In some cases, yes! If multiple family members or friends want to create separate obituaries for the same person, some platforms allow you to link them together under a single profile or memorial page.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain historical records. Some websites specialize in archiving old obituaries; these can be valuable resources for genealogical research or personal interest.

Can I republish an old obituary on social media?

If you're sharing an old obituary on social media out of respect for the deceased or as part of a family history project, it's generally acceptable. However, be mindful of copyright laws and obtain permission from the original publisher if necessary.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who died young?

Writing an obituary for someone who died young can be particularly challenging. Focus on celebrating their short but meaningful life, highlighting their accomplishments and personality traits that made them special.

How do I handle writing an obituary for someone who was estranged from their family?

This situation requires sensitivity and tact. Prioritize accuracy while avoiding hurtful or inflammatory language. Consider consulting with other family members or friends who were close to the deceased for guidance.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Absolutely! This is a thoughtful way to honor the deceased while supporting a worthy cause. Be sure to specify the charity name and any relevant details in the obituary text.

How do I proofread an obituary before publication?

Carefully review the text multiple times for spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, and factual inaccuracies. Ask others to proofread as well to ensure everything is correct before submission.
